This is an endIess game that shouldn't even be happening Kiyo will be HUGE soon enough and fights will be deadly as he will be strong enough to cause some real damage The animals are not at fault here, Shabani wants to keep his females and Kiyo wants to mate with females, they are doing exactly what they are supposed to do Wanna keep them both happy? Separate them. Fights are over, everyone is happy The zoo had over 10 years to figure out what to do with Kiyo and now that he is becoming a silverback there is no plan in place to move him

It would be good if the young males could be put in a bachelor group until they can be partnered with females. Annie needs to be separated from Shabani unless the zoo wants imbreds I’m sure though there are imbreds in the wild.

Isn't there another zoo that has a young adult program that will take Kiyomasa and Annie so they can socialize and mate with other gorillas their own age? It must be very frustrating being repressed. I feel bad for Kiyomasa because there is no room for growth for him in this living situation. I think the zoo needs to make some changes in regards to Annie and Kiyomasa.

I don't think many zoo's are intrrested in sharing their primates with any zoo's in Japan due to the conditions in which they house their primates. Its a concrete jungle with not enough natural roaming space. And NO stimulation or enrichment programs or opportunities. They do the bare minimum....feed them & clean their excrement.. Thats all!😢

There aren't very many zoo's that will trade animals with Japan because they don't have the same animal protection laws that other countries have. In the past a few have, but doubtful if they would now, unless they make big changes.

@@bigboytoyz541 I understand. Putting the animal protection laws aside, I think it is unfair for Kiyomasa and Annie to live in this bubble where Shabani treats them like they are little kids. They are both of mating age. Does that zoo still have the other gorilla display that they once had where Annie and Kiyomasa could possibly mate and socialize with other gorillas (brought into the zoo, like Gentaro) their age? I can't see brining other gorillas into the Shabani troop with Shabani being so possessive and overprotective. Let's face it, Shabani came to Japan from the zoo in Holland and previously from the Taronga Zoo in Australia. Isn't there a zoo in France that has young gorillas who leave their families to socialize with other gorillas?

Shabani's job is to lead, protect & produce. Shabani has been a good leader & a great father. These females have always given Kiyomasa plenty of love & attention & they have ignored Shabani. For years, Shabani has been patiently pursuing Ai, but she doesn't allow him to touch her. Shabani is a gentlemen who gets frustrated because the love of his life Ai won't even give him a hug. This zoo needs to do the deal with San Diego Zoo, so that Shabani can get the love & attention from the troop of 5 females.

AI is not Shambonis daughter . Ais father is around the same age as Nene and arrived around the same time as Nene in the 70's when they were both infants. Ai's dad long passed. Shamboni arrived years later and is much younger than Nene but a male is mature around two and he and Nene produced Ky their son.

In the world of silverbacks, Shabani is an amicable leader. All he’s doing is protecting his mating rights with Ai - which would happen in a far more aggressive manner in the wild. If Ai was truly bothered by Shabani’s presence, she’d be climbing up high where he tends not to follow. Since Ai isn’t doing that, we can assume she’s unfazed by the extra attention.

You should do a little more research into Western Lowland gorillas family structure, behavior, and the role of the silverbacks. In the wild, Kiyomasa would have already been driven from the troop or left on his own. There can only be one silverback in these troops, and Shabani is young and strong enough that Kiyo cannot hope to challenge him and win. This is what's stressing Shabani and making him act out with "outbursts"...those are dominance displays. Kiyo may be Shabani's son, but at this point Shabani sees him as a rival male that he can't get rid of. This is not a good situation for any of them, but it is the fact of gorilla biology and behavior. Momotaro and Gentaro are going through exactly the same thing, and it is a disgrace that their zoos never planned for this day and don't seem inclined to do anything about it now.

Oh, please! Ai and Kiyo are fine. Nobody sustained injuries - but even if they had, that’s completely normal. Adult female gorillas do get “stalked” by the dominant male - it’s a reality of gorilla culture. Your concept of what a Silverback “leader” should behave like are completely at odds with gorilla behavior. If you find Shabani’s behavior so disturbing, perhaps it would be better for your emotional health not to watch them.

Sadly, I'm guessing the answer is never. Nene is very old and frail and the males get pretty rough with her if she doesn't respond to their playing. For her own safety, it's probably best to keep her separate from the rest. The average lifespan of a female gorilla is between 35 and 40 years. Nene is 52 now (I think). Granted, she's not the oldest female gorilla in the world. But, she is still in the advanced elderly stage of her life. I understand your concern for Nene. She happens to have the biggest part of my heart among the entire troop. But, I have finally accepted that we may never get to see our dear old girl again. 🙁

Nene is the Mother of AI and Kiyomasa. AI is the Mother of Annie, yet didn't raise Her. The zoo raised Annie then reintroduced Annie to the troop. What would happen if new female was introduced would it be deadly for the Silverbacks? Maybe they need new enclosure for Kiyomasa and new female. It is a difficult situation for the zoo I'm sure. I hope they work something out. AI had one baby pass away and then Annie wasn't cared for right so zoo separated and raised Annie for about a year the reintroduced Annie at which point Shabani was an excellent Father to Her. It truly is a situation they have right now. Kiyomasa is only doing what's natural as is Shabani.

@@amybahner6511 It is quite common for female gorillas who have had to have caesarean section with anaesthesia when giving birth to not accept that the baby is their baby, this is what happened to Ai when she was pregnant with Annie. Since Annie was introduced back into the troop Ai has played more of a big sister role to Annie, always been kind and gentle with Annie and now that Annie is older they spend lots of time together playing.I think it is now time for Ai to take her mother Nene's place as Alpha female, Also I think that Shabani agrees with me, he wants and deserves more children. I would guess though that she doesn't know at all that Shab is her not her dad no more than Shab knowing that Annie and ki are his children. Imo he only knows that one day their mothers had them and was very protective of them when they were first born... I'm just saying that it is just an instinct or maybe a turn off perhaps to not desire to mate with older male gorillas... But it makes sense to avoid mixing with their dads But since I'm learning that AI has had some birthing issues not once but twice maybe her body is naturally rejecting his advances because it might be dangerous for her to have more little ones...

Why? Most youger female Gorillas do not like mating with much older male gorillas. This is a natural way for them to avoid mating with their own dads.
