This is why live music is so awesome, you emotionally travel along with the musicians and get to experience not just their highs but also their lows. This version is like watching a V8 race driver trying to get up Mt Panorama with a blown head gasket and then suddenly realising they are in the wrong gear, dropping it back to 2nd and doing a burnout all the way to the top of the hill.

“Dan has completely lost his voice. It probably wasn't a good idea for us to go to a Hollywood Hills party last night. Or for Dan to stay up late with our keyboardist Paul Mac recording himself screaming in the back of our tour bus a few days ago. This is the consequence of our actions. Before we stepped out onto The Tonight Show set to face the cameras, a doctor came to the green room and checked Dan over. ‘I strongly advise you don't sing for a week; you could do serious damage to your vocal cords’, the doctor told him. He ignored it and decided to push through. Standing under the bright studio lights, we know straight away we've made a mistake.” From the book Love and Pain, by Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou.

I watched this live. I missed the intro and didn't know it was Silverchair. I actually loved it. The rough vocals stood out. I bought this album because of it. Still a good album, but I have been looking for this video ever since. I thought Leno probably hated it.

Im sorry but this isnt trash it’s inspiring. I could cry right now. Everything was working against him in this performance but he worked through it and gave it his all. A true artist/musician. We have all been there. Shits not going your way but you gotta push through and make the best of it.

This is Australia’s best band ever to come out of here, absolutely no contest. And they only fulfilled approximately 70% of their potential.

Funny seeing this performance framed in two different ways. Johns saying he had laryngitis and the other bandmates saying it from excessive consumption of vodka and bourbon. Whatever the case, yeah, this performance is memorable..

I absolutely love this song. It is a vocal composition that is very challenging for most male voices, including his. It shows here, but that also shows his courage on a really big stage. Honestly, I'd rather listen to the recording, but I appreciate this effort.

He knows right from the start that it's going to be bad. Luckily Silverchair fans know his ability and would know he was sick.

Watching this after part 2 of the Australian Story - A Silver Lining. Shit I really cringed at the beginning but Daniel Johns being the professional he is - he persevered through that despite losing his voice. 👏🏻. For the fans sake I really wish the guys would all come together and make amends and reunite. We love Silverchair and the music.

I came to watch this after the Australian Story documentary. HUGE massive giant silverchair fan from Tomorrow right through to the end and somehow never saw this. I had just moved across the world so maybe I was distracted but now I came to watch I actually feel like they did ok considering 😂. Like yes Dans voice was gone and yes the song needed more justice but they held it together considering. Dan tried to go the metal route a bit 😂

Whatever happens, I will ALWAYS RESPECT and admire Daniel Johns and the rest of the Silverchair band and no one can change my mind! 😂They did Tomorrow when they were 13. Think about that. That alone blows my mind. I look at how his musical style evolved as well and admire his versatility. ❤❤❤

I loved the book that Ben and Chris wrote. It was heartfelt, funny, and interesting to hear about being a “rockstar” but not a typical one. And it was nice to hear their stories and experiences from their perspective. Daniel undergone many struggles and when the negativity consumes you it’s hard to remember the happy times and you tend to get distrustful of everyone (not meaning to but it happens when you get into that state of mind. speaking from experience.). I’m glad they all worked it out and maybe with time they can have that same brotherhood relationship again or perhaps they do in their own way. either way they are Australian legends in the music industry. and filled my youth with inspiration. they don’t make bands like this anymore at least in America.

Daniel Johns seems like he'd be, a cool guy to be friends with. I think, It would be and honor to play in a band with him, as much talent as he's got. Silverchair? I'm still waiting for the heavy metal version of this song.

I’m a bit surprise that Jay didn’t mention to the audience that Daniel had lost his voice, even though you would hope they would know through commonsense. Still, I feel pretty bad for the guy, not often you get to play Leno.
