You don't need the vinegar, just salt alone (with detergent) will do it. Dissolve 360g of salt in one litre of hot water. Add an egg-cupful of detergent...that's it. Don't shake the bottle, just swirl it. Spray onto leaves - dead in two hours. It struggles on ivy, but kills almost everything else. From a professional gardener in England.

We've tried a zillion of these DIY formulas, and what we've stuck with is buying strong vinegar (usually 30%) and watering it down to 10-12%. We use inexpensive spray bottles rather than a pump sprayer, but I'd use it in a cheap pump sprayer. The vinegar does eventually ruin the seals even if you rinse it out. But salt will ruin a sprayer much faster, in our experience, even if you clean the thing twice after every use. The 10-12% vinegar kills almost every weed it touches, and you don't have to saturate them so severely. Most stuff is wilted in 24 hours. It does kill the roots of most things, and the weeds don't come back during the same season. I see a lot of people saying they'll regrow in a couple of weeks, but that has not been our experience. A few really tough weeds will need a couple of applications. Alternatively, after you spray the vinegar, spray the same plant with plain laundry bleach or with hydrogen peroxide. Do NOT mix these chemicals beforehand, and don't, what, get down and sniff the plant. You will be creating a small amount of dangerous poisons, although they won't last long. Two rounds of vinegar will usually kill small poison ivy plants, though, and one will burn the leaves off of Virginia creeper. If you're working around plants you want to keep, put some vinegar in a dish and use a paintbrush to 'paint' it onto the weeds, leaves and stems. If you don't overdo it, you won't seriously or lastingly alter the pH of the soil, and, for instance, grass should be able to grow in the same spot you sprayed as soon as it rains or you hose the area down. The vinegar is neutralized pretty fast. Bleach breaks down pretty quickly, and peroxide even faster. Salt will linger, in our experience, and tend to keep the area dead for weeks. If the vinegar isn't working, you may have diluted it too much. Read the warnings on high-strength vinegar, though. It'll burn skin, eyes, your nose and lungs, etc. Still safer than a lot of commercial weed killers, but safety first.

A lot of weeds are annuals , so just getting them before they go to seed is super helpful. On disturbed soils you will see weeds take hold, but after preventing them going to seed for a few years (and possibly seeding with something desire able). You will likely get things under control. Keep in mind, There may be about 3 years worth of seeds in the soil. Also some weed seeds will germinate several times per season. Main things is don't let them go to seed.

Here's the fourth ingredient to increase effectiveness. First, mow or weed whack as low as possible. Then wait several days until an inch or two regrowth is seen. THEN spray. This will weaken the plant and cause it to use up carbohydrates from the roots. Results will be even better.

Totally satisfying and I will be keeping a bottle of this mixture on hand as part of my regular garden clean up kit. I tried this with the industrial strength of 45% vinegar. It took all of 5 minutes before the weeds turned pale yellow. The vinegar is pricey, and I'll most likely stick with the 5% in the future. A word of caution with the 45%...wear a respirator or at least double mask. Should the wind blows back any of the mist and you breathe it in, it's not a pleasant experience 😅.

I think the key point here is that you need to use it enough to alter the pH of the soil in order to prevent weeds from regrowing. You bring up a great point. I spray this in areas that I don't want to have to mow, but I also don't want to turn to dirt or mud. Things die to the point where you don't have to mow too much, but they don't get nuked either. I have a long strip of chainlink that I use this on. I've never had to replant any grass in that area so I know it's not killing anything, but it does prevent me from having to do any weedwacking along the fence for most of the season. A perfect balance in my opinion.

I have used vinegar to contain a spreading ginger . I didn't want to kill the plants , just the new shoots outside the bed. It did work to a degree ,but it was constant. So I resorted to weed matting which worked better. Hand weeding or a longhandled weed chipper is all you can do if you don't want to use glyphosate, which is harmless and works well. All we have to worry about is its overuse and evolving weeds with resistance

Where I live you can buy 12% and even 24% white spirit vinegar for food use (designed to be diluted). I've used that stuff - even if you just pour it neat over weeds, the weeds are goners. I don't think the salt is really necessary. I had a shaded bit of pavement that was covered in moss - there I just mixed vinegar, water to dilute slightly and a touch of dish soap and absolutely soaked that wet moss in it. It penetrated perfectly and 2 days later it was stone dead and power washing it off was effortless, the dead moss doesn't grip the asphalt the way live moss does. The issue is that if there's acid left on the surface and it starts to rain, the acidic water can get washed onto the grass or similar, the edge of my lawn next to that bit of pavement got singed a bit around the edges. Worth it, but it's something to keep in mind, the product might not stay put.

To answer the question about the small amount of salt applied in the mix and ruining the soil. Here in northern upstate New York the use of road salt during winter is prevalent and at far larger amounts then used here. I can attest that the grass grows great on the shoulder of the roads and keeps the highway departments busy all summer long mowing it. Great video.

That is such a fantastic point and the same here in NH, they use a ton of it and you are right there aren't burned streaks down the the highway where nothing grows! Great info thank you

my solution for driveway weeds is HOT Vinegar I boil it in my kettle and pour it on the weeds and the weeds die almost instantly. a couple hours later they're nice and crispy. I also use 10% cleaning vinegar but regular vinegar works just fine.

This is a very old formula both of my grandfathers used it to clear off flag stones on footpaths & down drive ways it is even effective without the vinegar, the detergent acts to break the surface tension, I've added detergent to commercial weed-killer in the past to reduce the amount needed, or increase the dilution rate to get the same effect as full strength weed-killer.

@@m42037 It would work but would take longer, when the salt in a water/soap base the weeds will take it up quicker.

Use cleaning strength vinegar instead of the 5%. Warm up the vinegar before you add salt it will dissolve it, I use Epsom salt and I use DAWN for the binder.

First , love your content. But you can mix 6% concentrate chelated Iron at 10-12oz/32oz spray bottle with water and a bit of surfactant. It will kill weeds in hours(tested) and not harm grass.

Iron is a necessary nutrient for plants, how does this not enhance weed growth?
@thorsman41962

@DSCuber Grasses will only take in what it needs, weeds don't have that limit and basically overdose on the Fe. FYI, this doesn't work well on grassy weeds like sedges, just broadleaf and bitter crest types.

I’ve been using a 45% vinegar and boy does that work! In just an hour or so you can see the plants drooping over, much faster than the more toxic stuff. I’m going to try the 5% because the 45% is much more expensive ($20+). I’ve found you have to do this maybe 3 times per season, but I have to do that with the toxic stuff too. I have really serious weeds and a lot of property plus a dog yard that I don’t want toxins in. I bought a chargeable 2 gallon sprayer that is so easy to use, just push a button and it’s on until you push it again. It also has different spray nozzles so you can control where the spray goes. Another piece of advice, do this on a hot sunny day with no wind so the spray doesn’t blow onto something you don’t want it to.

I've used white household vinegar, 2 gals in sprayer with half-pint of rubbing alcohol, shot of dish soap. works just as well and it doesn't ruin your sprayer. The alcohol is an excellent dessicant. Costco has the best deals on vinegar AND rubbing alcohol in my area.

Your desire to avoid impacting the water table is fine, but avoid Roundup to stop giving Monsanto/Bayer money......they are a truly evil company and one of the ones responsible for the absolutely horrid US food supply. Also how they aggressively prosecute farmers is horrible.

Local big box (the orange one) has 30% vinegar in the cleaning supplies aisle. - 2 cups instead of the entire bottle - same salt - Dawn dish soap (however, from another comment here, I think I may try vegetable oil to avoid the suds of shaking soap to mix.

@@richcaseaxon I have a 1 gallon sprayer. So, 2 cups to 14 cups water should be 1/8th of 30%, or 3.75%. Oil won’t mix with the solution so you’ll end up spraying vinegar, salt mixture and then oil. Oil on the plant will actually cause the mixture to repel rather than stick to the leaves.

This could raise the ph in your soil. I do use it on my gravel paths. When the weeds decompose in the garden the salt and vinegar go into the soil. After a few applications a soil test would be a good idea. Salt and vinegar are also harmful to microbes, worked and fungi.
