Purchased: August 2022 - still works GREAT! kzbin.infoUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn I live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install.This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment.I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

@@Edgotfed It was leaking refrigerant into the air which is a hazard. Smelled like grass clippings which if you google is refrigerant. I started having low blood oxygen levels so I knew something was wrong. I bought a detector off Amazon and it confirmed that there was a leak at the top of the unit. It did not cool my apartment and the room it was cooling was only 400 sqft. The dual hoses had gaps between the unit and the hose connector so it was leaking hot air out which they said was normal. The customer service was horrible. One rep told me it was normal, another told me return it, and another told me it sounded like a leak but maybe it wasn’t. I bought it from Best Buy. Returning it was a mess. I was on the phone for a week straight being transferred back and forth between Best Buy and ups. Ups wouldn’t take it back cause the box wasn’t “correct”. and Best Buy has yet to refund me. I was unable to put it into my car to return to the store and nobody could lift it as it’s way too heavy so UPS was the only option. My friend has a whynter ac one hose unit from 2015 and it actually works. This unit was horrible or at least I got a defective one. I’m just sticking to fans and hopefully finding a better dual hose AC one day just not buying from Best Buy ever again. Dealing with UPS was the worst part of all of this.

I have the Danby branded version of this exact thing. Hooked it up yesterday. An important consideration is whether my "solar generator" can run it. Yes, it can! This unit has a soft start feature that ramps up the fan speed and compressor speed. It reached about a kilowatt of power consumption after a minute or so. It also does not dim the lights as it cycles on and off; this one doesn't seem to cycle at all; just ramps up and down the compressor barely noticeable. The dual host configuration made a big difference, more than I anticipated. By NOT pulling in warm outside air the room stays cooler even when the unit is off. The one it replaced, a single host 12000 BTU, would pull in so much warm air that it was nearly ineffective except in its immediate vicinity. So, I am very happy. Inverter technology CAN fail abruptly more often than simple electric motor technology but overall I am delighted with it.

This is made by Midea. They also have the same one branded with the Toshiba name as well. I bought mine at Wal-Mart a few months ago as a refurbished model for $419. I've been using it to cool a 2000SF...yes, 2,000 SF area in Colorado and it performs perfectly even at temps in the mid 90's. Keep in mind this is a well insulated home with 2x6 construction and most windows blocked from direct sunlight entry. This unit puts out a LOT of ice cold air! The Toshiba model (and also the Midea) also has a heat pump function which I'll be testing in about a month. I did test it one cool July night at 50F and it heated the room very fast. The inverter feature is awesome. I have this plugged into my Kill-A-Watt and I routinely measure readings of 300-700 watts while it's cooling. Long story short? An amazing amount of cooling for very little electricity!

Inverter units are the only way to go, when you can get one. I swapped out a 10K BTU Crosley/Whirlpool window unit this summer for a 12K BTU Inverter-based Midea unit. It was under $350 from Costco. Not only is it MUCH quieter, it's saving me about $35 a month in electricity costs. Crazy!!

Interestingly, the remote CS shows for this portable unit is basically identical to the one for my Midea window unit. It makes me wonder just how many (or few) manufacturers are even building these things, although, it's also possible the remotes are simply from a separate OEM and share a common lineage.

I completely agree. Midea makes something like 95% of the worlds air condtiioners and 70% of those are labelled for someone else. "Danby DPA120CBIMBDB-6 12,000 BTU SACC 3-in-1 Portable AC with Inverter, Remote Control & Wi-Fi - Matte Finish" Was $549Cdn at Costco. Only had it a week and is great. Right, all portables are shoddy bandaids to the real problem of landlords who buy literal garbage houses knowing full well that the tenant will be the one shafted with utility bills. They prefer it, even... because it keeps renters poor and ensures they won't be able to buy their own house that they can insulate. Then there are renters like us... who do functional, up-to-code improvements for the time we're renting, keeping all original parts so that when we buy our houses with the $600 a month we saved not having to run sixteen single hose portables, we'll just slap the shitbox back together with that crap that was there and take the improvements to our new house. And the landlords aren't even smart enough to know which of their "investment proporties" had which fittings, so they wouldn't even know when do change something to improve our use of the space that we pay to have full, complete and unfettered access to use and be comfortable in. lol

Roughly how many degrees can it cool a small bedroom if it's 100F outside? The last 3 summers have been brutal. 105-110F almost every day for months. The current AC unit I have can only make about a 20 degree difference.

I see that the new link goes to the Whynter. Is that supposed to be the same unit you are recommending in this video? I wasn't sure because I see that Dreo's are still being sold on Amazon too.

How can the intake and exhaust hoses be right next to each other? Wouldn't the intake suck in the exhaust?
@SilverCymbal Жыл бұрын
Im sure there is a small amount that is, but 99% of portables dont even have dual hoses. I now have 3 of these and absolutely love them. A year later these are awesome.

Does this have a dehumidification mode? Where does condensate go?

It dehumidifies during AC but if you just want to dehumidification it does have that function there is a drain hose on back.

Does this unit have a variable speed compressor? Will it legit do a sleep/quiet mode where it’s cooling with a slower fan and compressor speed?
@willydilly9020 Жыл бұрын
Yes the compressor is variable speed. uses 250 watts at minimum and 1200 watts max.

A small correction - you say it has "a hose the pulls air out of the house and another that pulls air in". That's not right because the air doesn't come out of the house, air comes from the outside, through the unit where heat is added or removed depending on the heat/cool mode and then heat is transferred via a heat exchanger and the air goes back outside. So your inside and outside air never mix thus technically the air never come "out of the house".

That is correct, only exception is if you use it for only dehumidification. AC, you never touch it, mines been running for 2 months now, no draining, none of that. amzn.to/3R8r1jl

I don't get why, if you're going to have a super gigantic AC outlet plug , you can't include a grounded outlet in the plug to try to reclaim the second outlet for a lamp or something lower powered, rather than having to unplug that AC unit if you need to use that outlet for something low powered..
@SilverCymbal2 жыл бұрын
They require a GFCI for these so the plug sadly is big like that. Seems to be same for all portables now.

Excellent job on this one. Any idea how much energy it uses? I couldn't find anything related to seer on the link you posted. Maybe hook it up to a killavolt meter and let us know kw per hour. Thanks!

Thank you it was a really nice AC. Its 1200 watts but keep in midn that is at maximum and will decrease as demand drops unlike non-inverter models that are constant.

This unit is infinitely variable, and runs between 190 and 1300 watts with the compressor running, if my toshiba (same unit) is anything to go by. The warmer it gets, the harder it will work.

Got one of these from Costco and had to return it the same day. The compressor fan was out of balance and creating a ton of noise.

I modified a single-hose unit I got from Costco to be dual-hose with some duct from Home Depot, it’s ugly af and the cardboard casement window adapter I made doesn’t look too great either, but it works great. I even designed and 3D printed a quick disconnect for the second duct to make storage easier.

Can someone comment on these dual hose portable AC compared to window units of the same BTU/power? Portable units makes the most sense with my location (lots of horizontal windows/sliding doors). I’ve tried old single hose portable units and they are TERRIBLE.
@willydilly9020 Жыл бұрын
A window unit is always going to be more efficient than these portables. But, depending on your location (HOA's and Apartment management) a window unit may not be feasible. Currently this unit (made by Midea and sold under many different brands including Toshiba) is the most efficient portable made to date. You can check for yourself a comparable window unit and portable with the same BTU sacc rating and look at their wattage. This unit will use 1200 watts at full power while a comparable window unit will probably use closer to 850 watts. And yes the single hose units are awful, they cool the immediate room for sure, but draw in hot air from outside through every crack possible because of the negative pressure they create. If you're in the US with a costco nearby they are selling these units on sale until early july (The Midea Duo) for $450. One more thing, if you buy one. Make sure you dont plug it in right away, let it sit for a few hours up right so the oil in the compressor has time to go back to the bottom where it needs to be. So many people plug them in right away after putting them on its side in the car and wonder why its running so loud/rough.
@LarryL619 Жыл бұрын
@@willydilly9020 I’ve seen the portable dual hose units at Costco and I think I’m going to purchase on of the Danby 10k BTU units. I don’t have the Midea Duo available locally. I do live in an HOA and I also don’t have lift up windows for easy installation. Even with a portable unit, I’ll have to fabricate an adapter for some of my larger windows or sliding doors where I’ll be using it. I’ll also be tossing my single hose AC lol. Thank you so much for your in depth response!

How would this fare if I were trying to run a hole through the exterior wall of my house? (No windows in room)
@SilverCymbal Жыл бұрын
You can definitely do that. You would just duplicate the window cut out and it would work fine as long as its the same size. User the window piece as a template

Would you happen to know if I can use this in my RV standard outlet? I’m asking because I’ve been told I can’t use a window unit and I don’t know if that has something to do with the amount of voltage? Wattage? What’s the word? 😂 Thanks so much if you can help. Can’t find the answer to this anywhere.
@TheMidgardViking Жыл бұрын
Does your RV not have AC? Most of them do nowadays unless it's some classic model. If you can't use a window unit, you can't use this either. It draws more current. 12 amps I believe.

The inverter doesnt save much power. A non-inverter uses more electricity when running, but it stops and starts as needed. An inverter will slow down and run all the time. Both use the same amount of power over a given time period such as an 8 hour day. The power savings of this model come from it being a dual hose design.
