I've seen them present in a building for decades, yet there's never any damage to anything. I know they must be damaging something, but I don't know what it would be. And their numbers never seem to get out of hand. Is it possible that other bugs are eating them and keeping their numbers down? There are a lot of small black ants that are also present, maybe they are eating the silverfish eggs.

It is probably the other way around. Silverfish typically prefer a meal of dead insects over paper and other packing materials as a food source. Since there are plenty of dead insects around (such as the small black ants) they may not have a need to feed on the paper products right now. That situation can change rapidly though, and that is when you will begin to see damage.

@@InsectsLimited I've noticed different times that if there is something lying on the roof, and if I go up there and remove it, there may be a bunch of silverfish under it. I'm not really sure what to think about that. Something I didn't mention earlier: on occasion, I've seen those red centipedes that are about 3 in Long. I wonder if those things eat up the silverfish.

What about water

High relative humidity (RH) is an environment that they thrive in.
