First don't just set cans off to the side, they be infested too! Although the food inside the can is safe they often harbor eggs and webbing around the rims (top and bottom) and also behind the label. This video doesn't stress enough how rapidly these moths can take over your home. They are extremely difficult to get rid of if you don't address the first signs of infestation immediately and thoroughly. The larvae feed on everything including the glue on can labels, the sticky backing of shelve liners, they can even get under wallpaper and you will find little holes where they chew their way out. The use hot soapy water to wash things like cans and plastic bottles with glued on labels, check all screw on lids around the threading also. The best cleaning solution I have found is borax and water. I try not to completely dilute the borax. Just enough that it sprays without clogging. I suggest after wiping everything down to give a light spray of borax solution over everything and allow to dry. I think the borax crystals are like little razors to the eggs and larvae therefore damaging them enough to end the life cycle of these invasive moths. Good luck to anyone dealing with them. Hope this helps!

Super helpful! You seem knowledgeable about this and I was wondering what you would make of finding 2 of their larva in the fridge? We’ve been dealing with them for about a month now and have cleaned everything, haven’t restocked, have traps set out and kill everything we still see. I saw 2 in my fridge today and just feel so defeated! Would you happen to have any guess as to how they got in there and if I should now toss everything in the fridge? I felt like that was my last safe space and it’s now gone haha
@Rocknrollsoul812 жыл бұрын
@@rainbowsANchocolate to the best of my knowledge moth larvae can't survive the cold temperature of a refrigerator. I don't think you would need to throw out any items from there. I'm not quite sure how they would have gotten in there. Perhaps they were on a container or something you had put in there. It's often suggested that dry grains and flour be placed in the refrigerator or freezer for several days when you bring it home from the grocery store in order to kill any eggs or larvae that might be in the product. I would just give a quick wipe of the surfaces in yhe fridge with vinegar water solution and check the containers to see if there were any hitchhikers on them when you placed them in the fridge. Don't let them make you feel defeated. I have battled them for several years now. They are incredibly hard to get rid of, but with the borax solution I have finally felt like I can claim victory over them soon. This year I saw significantly less and by continuing to stay on top of killing the ones I see and spraying the borax solution (especially in hard to reach places like cracks and crevices) I am hoping next year will be the end of this long battle to take back my home from these invasive little pests. I also suggest getting airtight container preferably glass or very heavy plastic to keep your food safe from further infestation. Good luck it's not easy but you can defeat them!

I had a bird food Tupperware container that I guess didn’t seal like I thought & one night at 1:30am I felt something wet in my bed. It was a maggot. I found 2 out of no where. I jumped up freaked out changed the whole bed & couldn’t find the source. Finally I looked up. Pantry moths had hatched & maggots were on the ceiling & walls. I stayed up until 5:30 making & using a handmade vacuum attachment due to high ceilings but there was a ledge I couldn’t get to. I discovered a lemon/lime mixture eventually kills them so I shot that up at the ledge. After a few days of obsessive eradication I thought they were gone. I zip locked the bird food & found some nuts & things in the kitchen they were in. Ziplocked everything everywhere. It’s been a month & I’m seeing the moths again. Got sticky triangular moth traps put up but I’m going to have to get more proactive again. Oh & they make nests in the ceiling crevices so you have to vacuum those out. That’s where the maggots hatch from.

I would add to the steps to look for larva cocoons in high corner like the ceiling around the pantry and kitchen area. Also I would put any prepackaged food you saved in the freezer for a few days to kill any larva or cocoons missed. If you don't do this you may quickly find a new infestation in a short period. They have finally died down in the house but they still seem to breed in the lanai. At least I am able to walk inside the house and not have swarms of them in my face! I'm dealing with an infestation right now. A lot of larvae. Just been spraying the nooks and crannies of the walls and the storage cabinet with a spray that dehydrates the larvae. Next to that I crush and vacuum up any larvae that survive that. Had it before and got rid of it like that but since summer is drawing to an end a few moths must've made it inside and so I'm dealing with it again. It's a nightmare due to how fast they reproduce.
@kwp92702 жыл бұрын
The moths where I'm from are a grayish color. I didn't think much of it at first because I've never had this issue until I moved into my most recent home. I'm sure that the problem came with the house. So I finally threw away my dry pasta, flour and other wheats and grains, took the cabinet shelves out of the one where I noticed they were coming from and then I cleaned out the cabinet with white vinegar. That eliminated them for about a week or two and then they multiplied to the max. Which means that they've spread to other cabinets and crevices in the kitchen. I have no idea how they're surviving because I no longer put grains, wheats and flour in the cabinets but in the refrigerator instead. What I've done in recent times is put up sticky fly ribbons used for flies and lots of them have gotten stuck and I've killed a lot of them with a fly swatter. I can tell that I've greatly reduced their population in my home by doing this. If the problem persists (which it probably will) I'll finally decide to clear out all canned foods, jars and everything else and spray scorching hot water with bleach or alcohol in every single cabinet to see if they can survive that. I have a garden pump sprayer for the job when or if the time comes to get that plan in motion.

I check the pantry everyday...not seeing any eggs or larva but I keep seeing 3-4 adult moths so I have a spray bottle of alcohol that I've been using to kill them. Before that EVERYTHING was infested. I had NO idea where the eggs were until I started looking hard. In the rim of all my spices, in my ziplock bag boxes, my aluminum foil boxes, the wrappers around my canned goods, under my spice rack. It was heartbreaking!! I THOUGHT I got all the eggs everywhere so for now I've got the spray bottle on hand at all times and I will not put anything back in my pantry until I don't see adults in there anymore :( this is so frustrating. @GabStidgАй бұрын
The fridge is too cold plus it’s airtight so they won’t get to the food in there unless you have a habit of leaving the fridge door open. But anything cardboard, paper, or plastic the larvae can chew through. If you wash your blankets regularly, I wouldn’t be concerned about those. Sardines in a can with a cardboard wrapper, they could make their cocoons between the folded ends of the box so I would check that over. It’s literally the most tedious work ever but those bastards get in EVERYTHING. You can spray stuff with a 50/50 vinegar and water mixture and it will kill them, at any point in their life cycle. Pet food is a huge issue with them, they will set up camp in dry pet food, even birdseed so if you have any of that stuff store it in an airtight container, even if you store it in the garage because when you bring it inside, you just bring them back in your house. They’re awful to get rid of.

I don't really know what to say. All my food in the pantry is in boxes like Tefal Clip&Close (it is plastic, but a thick one), I cleaned my entire house, and I used a professional service. One month later, I noticed again some pantry moths. I'm desperate.
@zoe1882 Жыл бұрын
You have to throw out all your food in your house. And any new food you buy and bring in, you have to use hard plastic AIR TIGHT containers to store them in. Plastic bags are no good, they can chew through plastic bags. If there's food that is expensive and you want to save, you have to throw it in the freezer for at least a week to kill off any eggs. You have to be meticulous with this routine until the current adults die off and can't lay any eggs on food to breed the next generation.

@@zoe1882 Tefal Clip&Close is one of the best air thigh containers you can find and all the food stored there was just fine. The source were some pasta brought by a friend and left in the original packaging, from there some dehydrated oranges used as decoration that I forgot about. I found a dried cocoon even in one of my favorite cooking books (Falastin), I cleaned the book and that's it. Or even on the back of the food scale or some wooden bowls. The food wasn't infested. With a lot of nerves and desperation I solved the problem.

PLEASE READ Pertinent information herein as this is my 3rd infestation in the last 6 years, yet notably different. The first originated from a dented box of breakfast cereal. Back then I had no clue. I ate breakfast downstairs, returned upstairs, & within a few days, these pests are likewise. After online research and dozens of hours actually finding and destroying their "nests", as well as utilizing the pheromone traps, I was safe, until next season? They came back next warm humid season, more prolific than ever! New nest(s) were now upstairs where there are No Food Sources, rather a source of Heat & Humidity! Specifically on top of my refrigerator which is in a recessed corner of the kitchen. Problem solved! ??? This year these incredibly rapidly reproducing pests seem to be getting through my window air conditioner. Yes there was a "web nest" nearby this dark, warm & humid area, however, the Major Attraction seems to be my choice of lighting?

How did you get rid of them ??
@MrRIK3252 жыл бұрын
@@Fromtheearttothemoon Not entirely rid yet, however, set up pheromone glue traps next to night lights, and have hair spray handy. The first recommendation attracts both males & females! The second allows for easier elimination since it flies slower & lower. Very vital as each is ready to mate within 24 hours of hatching, and is capable of laying up to 500 eggs, that continue hatching ...

I did all that you said and it did not work... they came back.
@zoe1882 Жыл бұрын
There's a food source somewhere you have not discovered. Or the place you're buying food at has them and you keep bringing them back in. They can also live in that cocoon stage for up to 4 months. If you notice, they don't really come out as much during winters, if u get cold winters. They usually emerge in the spring, summer or fall.

@Beverly Glover I store all my grains and beans in the fridge or freezer after I buy them. Then I store them in large Tupperware bins. That's helped but we will see in the summer time. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

Have you tried the sticky traps? I got some off Amazon and they worked better than I could have imagined. Do you have pets? Cause they live pet food, that’s how we ended up with them, came in with the dog food. If you have pets make sure you store their food in airtight containers. Even birdseed. We had bird seed in the garage and they set up camp there too.
