I think if these rolls were actually "unsearched" there would be a lot more mint state coins. If that first roll were actually from 1955, I think at least the 1955 penny wouldn't be as dark and circulated as it is.

I was searching $50 bags of cents back in the 1950's. Yes, you would have seen nice shiney coins from the 50's as well as a few nicer looking coins from the 40's and 30's. Definitely a scam. And not a good one either since the seller will have zero repeat customers and poor feedback. I've bought a good number of "unsearched" rolls on eBay over the years. If the ends are shown they usually represent at least half to 95% of the value of the entire roll. But sometimes they are fun and not a horrible value. Those three rolls are among the worst I've ever seen.

I kinda like watching videos like these. I, being an eBay seller always try find ways to be the most honest seller out there. What to avoid doing and what to good tips there are. The way I do it ( and the way those other seller SHOULD do it) I buy sacks of 10,000 pennies, sacks of 5,000 pre-40’s wheat cents, sacks of 1,000 Indian head cents, and just to be different from others seated and barber dimes about 100 thrown into the mix. I have plenty of these coins so I don’t need them. I throw them through a coin sorter and they go into rolls. I tighten them up and ship them. I don’t even know what some rolls have. Plus I sell them for a low price. 6.75. Enough to make profit and plenty of room for buyers to find great finds. And that’s how it should be. I have no idea why people don’t get how to be honest. People are maybe too greedy. It’s honestly so sad to see people get manipulated by these scammers out here. Plus it makes all the rest of us HONEST sellers look bad. I dont know but there’s my rant.

I totally agree, your suspicions make a lot of sense to me. Or maybe 150 cents. Watching this video made me go and get my coin collection box. In it are 12 rolls of pennies, that I got 30 years ago when a friend of mine who was working the register at a gas station called me to come over and he had something for me. Someone must have raided a collection, and spent those 6 dollars I think on ciggies, and they were all machine wrapped rolls. With writing on them... 1957 to 1960, some were P some D. And obviously uncirculated. I think the only rolls I ever opened were the 1960s because I needed to find out small date or large date, but I only looked at the first coin or two in each roll. Oh, I think I took out a wheatie because I'd never held an uncirculated one before. I might have robbed one to put in a coin album, but put the others back, and tried to fold the roll ends back over. So I know what it looks like when rolls from that era are end-opened and re-shut. These kind of looked like that. However these were already kind of beat up even then, and they got more so over the years. I don't know if they are worth more unsearched or not, but I've resisted opening them up to see if they really are all totally uncirculated inside, but the enders certainly are.

I completely agree, there are a lot of tell tale signs. There would definitely be a lot of coins that still had the mint luster. The rolls should not have opened that easily. Sure two of them were more tightly packed, but once you got past the front, it just kind of fell open easily. If it was unsearched and unopened, then you would expect a tear, like you do when searching modern coins today. Amazing content, I love it, I truly do. I've been watching your channel for quite awhile and it is extremely informative. I'm only 16 and this is one of the few special channels that has enhanced my coin collecting hobby. Statistically you could create a frequency distribution of the years on the coins, and if that distribution significantly differs from the typical distribution of years in what are known to be unsearched rolls, you could all but conclude that the roll was searched (you would use a chi-square goodness of fit test to show this)

Chiming in after 8:55 where you ask for what we think after some in just the first roll. I used to go through penny rolls back in the 60's and the coins in these rolls are clearly not anything like old rolls. There were tons of 44's 45's because of the high mintage during those years, and steel cents were somewhat uncommon, but would show up often enough--some people saved them, but you could always find them in change if you searched enough rolls. I think the newest coin you got was a 55 or so, and rolls from the 50's I would expect to have even a smattering of common date Indian Cents. Sure there wouldn't be many of them, but they would occasionally show up in rolls even in the 60's so, how can they advertise the rolls as being 100% wheat cents. The condition of the coins are nothing like any rolls from any era. In short: DEFINITELY a scam. Thanks for the video.

And I'm the second note I buy a lot of wheat lots. I've found good seller's, bad, great, and horable. I don't want to put a label that all of these are scams because they're not you do have to dig to the dirt to get to the buried gold but once you find a few good seller's stick with them I have three I buy from regular and still try others Happy Hunting

I know I'm late to the party here but in 1954 the bank had changed its name from Wells Fargo Bank & Union Trust Company to Wells Fargo Bank. Finding a post 1954 penny seems highly suspect unless they were using roll wrappers from 3 years before with a wrong name printed on them. It's reasonable to assume they might have had pre-1955 rolls but not so reasonable to assume they were still wrapping pennies in 1958 with 4 year old incorrect wrappers.

Good public service video. My wife fell for the ones on Etsy where they put the dime in the end of the roll but she didn't pay quite as much. The real give away is the date spread - if that was wrapped in 1958 then there most of those pennies would dated within a decade. They put that spread of ages in there so that newbies would see the older coins and think they found something special since new collectors associate age with value - hey, a 1917 - that must be worth at least what I paid for the roll!

I think they threw a lot of old worn ones in to impress you and make it seem special, where a real roll from 1955 or later would include many more coins new at the time. "Unsearched" does exist, it's hard to find, but I bought a set of four Roman provincial coins from Viminacium, unsearched and unattributed for a very good price. One of the coins was the emperor Aemilian, who reigned for just 3 months and is pretty hard to get. If the dealer had looked at all that would not have been in there!
@Silverpicker4 жыл бұрын
Mark, I think you hit the nail on the head. I too think they seeded the rolls with a few oldies so as to make it seem like it was a "lucky" roll. Like you said, you can find some good unsearched stuff, but it's few and far between

I have bought a few rolls online, that were susposed to be unseaerched, only to get them and realize that they were. It is so easy to undo a rolled edge and redo it where it is hard to tell it was done. Granted, they may not have been searched by the people i bought them from, but i am pretty sure it is a scam.

The number of teens and '20s wheat cents are even more suspicious considering that the mint started increasing production significantly in the 30s and it really jumped in the 40s.

What seems weird to me is how conveniently they are wheat cents. I'd figure there would be a lot more say bank rolls from 59-65 where most of the things would be wheat cents but you would have quite a few au 59-65 ones. I'd actually be a lot more likely to trust a roll where the seller was selling 1962 circulated bank rolls than 1958 ones.

@@Silverpicker I used to hunt wheat cents back as a kid in the lateish 1970s-early 80s and it was a lot different. It does mean I know what a 1970s roll should look like. It is odd, you could occasionally find a 1909 vdb back then, but indian head pennies were no more common then than they are today. I actually think there are more buffalo nickels in circulation now than there were in 1980.

Lack of better condition coins is a sure sign they were searched. The seller doesn't even try to hode that fact. They needed to salt a bunch of great condition 40s and 50s to give the rolls a little a sense of authenticity.

I bought one of the 5 lbs of wheats. It was decent but I had mostly empty books to start with.
@SixWildKids Жыл бұрын
An alternate way of guessing the value would be to compare the coins to how many boxes of pennies you'd have to search to find that many wheat pennies. Most of the videos I've seen on box searches people find about 10 or so wheats per box. For $10 a roll you'd have to search 5 boxes to get the 50 coins. That's looking at 12,500 pennies. What's your time worth? That would take at least a few hours plus the hassle of getting the boxes, re-wrapping and returning the boxes. One guy I watched was going through 250 boxes to try to fill a new book. That means he looked at 625,000 pennies. Again, what's his time worth? I would love to see a video on how to find missing pennies for a fairly complete collection.

I got rolls from someone on eBay, but they sold them to me off of eBay as they were never listed and I just happened to ask about them. I got the rolls for $5.50 each and almost completed an entire collection from them when considering mint/year, not varieties, including 3 1909 with 1 being a nice VDB that would probably get an Extra Fine grade, maybe a low AU if lucky.

An unsearched roll from 1955 would not only have AU 50's coins, but would also have probably at least 4 or 5 Indians. I delivered papers back then and saw many, many Indian head cents, Liberty and Buffalo nickles, Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty quarters, and Walking Liberty halves. Today, in 2023 there are ZERO unsearched rolls.

I just have a question I searched up the value of wheat cents on coin tracker a site I have used for years and its more of 15 to 35 cent a peice and is it just me or was that 1957 double die?

Nobody is gonna pay 35 cents a piece for common date wheaties (unfortunately). Don't think the 57 was anything special, unfortunately

Thoughts at 8:50....it’s very curious that an original “bank wrapped roll” from at least 1955 doesn’t have more coins from the late 40s & early 50s...and is lacking specifically in S mint/AU/BU coins from the early 50s. There have been several early dates from 1910-30’s...but they’re all common and only the 1934 D and 1910 are probably worth more than 25 cents (maybe 50c in their condition). That’s my 2 cents so far 😉

I have about 500 wheat pennies that have been saved by my dad and the rest of the family every time we would get one in change it would go in a jar and before he passed away he gave them to me that I I'm going to go through them again, now that I know what all to look for and I think I have 1955 double die in those and I may have two maybe three of them. I just bought my digital microscope a couple weeks ago. So that should show you how much of a newbie I am LOL but it is a fun hobby at my age or should I say my tender age of 60 LOL I have been retired for 10 years. I have gotten bank wrapped rolls that are circulated but bank sealed that did have the full range, shields, memorials, and a wheat or 2 in a single roll
@renemichaud87514 жыл бұрын
The only reason it would be worth buying wheat cent rolls would be if your hunting for specific dates or filling out a new wheat cent book.
@renemichaud87514 жыл бұрын
I agree Max, it was a bust, if there were really unserched coins, the later ones 1940s and 50s would have been more reddish than brown and the details would have been in better condition. If they were real, they're would have been a lot of common dates and not a wide variety of dates. I believe that those coins were in circulation for a long time due to the condition and the colouration. I only own 4 wheat cents pulled from circulation that were in better condition then some found in your 3 rolls. I also believe that Canadian coin rolls would be more worth it especially if the listing says that there king George VI or queen Elizabeth young head.

@Silverpicker3 жыл бұрын
That's totally reasonable
@lorenzomaximo18184 жыл бұрын
The term Unsearched is subjective. Heres how the deal works. A dealer can claim he will sell you rolls of Unsearched wheat cents. He is telling the truth. The way he gets away with that is he buys them from other dealers who have searched them and tells the other dealer there's nothing really rare in any of those rolls. Just common date circulated wheaties. Once in awhile they will throw you a bone to keep you coming back for more.
@Silverpicker4 жыл бұрын
I think you're right that that happens, but I don't agree that they're "telling the truth. "Unsearched" doesn't mean that only the seller hasn't searched them. That's like me selling an empty jar of peanut butter but since I personally never opened it. I advertise it as "Unopened Jar of Peanut Butter."

I'm skeptical of the bank identity font on the wrappers. The paper could be old, but I'll wager the stamp is modern. The small print and numeric font (not "PENNIES") appears to maybe even be Helvetica, which didn't exist until 1957, and likely wasn't in use on coin rolls of the period.
@Silverpicker4 жыл бұрын
That is extremely perceptive. I didn't even consider that the stamp is what is fake. Very clever (in a bad way lol). Thanks for pointing that out. I bet you're right
