Recently learned in a documentary about some neat orca behavior that I never knew. The opening of the mouth is a sign of interest and when they show you their belly it means they are trusting you/coming in peace. Orcas use echolocation to communicate with other whales. I know sperm whales receive these signals on their underside so you will often see them exposing their belly. Though I am not sure if this is the case for orcas, I think this one may have been trying to communicate with the boat.

Brutal and deadly to their food animals. They have NEVER porpoisely (sic ;-) harmed humans...except at the EVIL Seaworld, where, after being caught and separated from their family, they are made to swim in a "sink" and perform. These are highly intelligent animals--I'm sure they are fully aware of their horrible fate.

People are always so inconsistent about nature. A sea lion is an absolute terror to penguins, but a sea lion is also just food to an orca, and may be tortured if the orca is in the mood for sport before the meal. There are a myriad of reasons for violence in the animal kingdom, breeding rights, assertion of dominance, protection of herd or territory, hunting...we act as though it's a beautiful circle of life when it's really kill or be killed.
@mjp1522 жыл бұрын
@@iabdgogogo1234letsgo the entire view on nature has been "disneyfied". In my home country there is a big debate on rewilding extensive areas to get greater biodiversity. One element of this is to release large grassing animals (buffalo, horses and what not) because they apparantly play an important role in the system. Fair enough. BUT ... there have now been several occurrences where these animals have become undernourished and now the nature types want to set up feeding posts. Something is off here, people 😑

I no that they wouldn't survive very long but that is only because they have had their natural instincts subdued. why do you think it takes years to train an orca to allow a trainer in the pool when people swim with them in the ocean with no issue every day. Its because that animal needs to be broken in to being submissive just like a horse. The animal really wouldn't let some weird human climb all over him if he was in the wild, so the trainers take their time to condition the animals in to respecting them. No animal in the world would perform the same tricks day in day out for years on end just for "fun", they do it to survive. In pools the size some celebs have in their gardens.

Orcas have the most gyrified brain out of all species. Each pod uses a unique vocalization to communicate. There are ten ecotypes, all of whom specialize in different prey. The original Shamu was a Southern Resident from J pod. Ted Griffin and his team harpooned and killed her mother. She was supposed to be Namu's companion; however, she didn't get along with either Namu or Ted. He sold her to Seaworld San Diego in 1965. She died six years later of an infection. An estimated 170 orcas were taken from the wild. Corky, Lolita, Ulises, Katina, and Kiska are the only ones that remain alive in North America. Lolita, a Southern Resident from L pod, is the daughter of L25 Ocean Sun. Over 90 years old, Ocean Sun is the oldest known orca in the world. With the passing of her eldest daughter L23 Tsunami and Lolita's capture, Ocean Sun is left without immediate family members. She often travels with orcas from another pod. Corky, the oldest orca in captivity, is a Northern Resident from the A5 pod, A23 matriline. Her younger sister Ripple has been leading the pod after the passing of their mother Stripe. Corky also has a younger brother named Fife, niece Midsummer, great-nephews Fern and Ne'nakw, and great-niece Eliot. Lolita was captured in Puget Sound, Washington. Corky is from British Columbia. Ulises, Katina, and Kiska are from Iceland.

Just want to clarify a few key facts regarding this encounter. I am seeing lots of comments questioning the reason why this orca is alone, its behavior and why was it approaching the boat. First, this orca was never baited or fed at anytime. The woman was eating some food from a can as the orca made several passes around and under the boat. Perhaps this orca was curious about her eating, this may be a reason explaining some of this behavior...but it was never fed. There is no definitive explanation as to why he (it's a male) was behaving in this manner. He was extremely curious but never was there a point where we felt any threat or danger from this magnificent creature. We had this animal hanging around us for more than an 2 hours. Regarding him being alone and without his pod...he was not alone when we first spotted him. There were 3 other orcas (1 male and 2 females) which followed us initially. The male stopped following after 5 minutes, the other 2 females after approximately 10 minutes. They swam off a bit while he stayed with us. After approximately 2 hours, he left and headed back towards his pod. Another note: he was not injured. Some people are commenting on his fins/flippers being injured. He had parasitic copepods on both his pectoral fins/flippers and his fluke/tail. Not that uncommon. I truly appreciate all of your comments and respect your opinions. However, if you have a negative comment, please be decent about it. We are all entitled to our opinions, whether positive or negative. Please just do it in a respectful way. It's easy to judge what happened, how or why it happened...we all are guilty of that from time to time. However, unless you were there, watching all the behavior leading up to this encounter, you really don't know...you can just assume. Thank you for taking the time to watch this video. I will post more videos on this encounter soon.

Not everybody lives near the water to be able to, that was the beauty of marine parks back in the day & the only reason I even fell so in love with them to begin with. Sure this way is fine seeing them on a tv or internet screen, but there's no experience like seeing one in person & seeing just how majestic they really truly are. Marine parks brought the ocean world to those can't get to it, because I know after the remaining orcas Seaworld has left are gone since they've now discontinued the breeding program (and understandably so because I'm not against that decision & know it's just the right one to make) I along with most people will probably never see another one in any other way again outside of the television or the internet.

I’m not saying sea world is just plain evil. Some of the things they do deserve praise, But In the case with orcas they are wrong.
@elcajondavid16 жыл бұрын
EscoSnipe. Please make a better effort learning something before commenting on it. Sea World stopped taking Orcas from the ocean a very longtime ago, way before there was even a controversy over it. While you talk a mean streak about how bad Sea World is, who would you call if you found a sick seal, dolphin or any other sea critter washed up on shore? Sea World is one of the very few that actually have the resources and are willing to help. How about people that will never have the opportunity to see an Orca up close in the wild? Have you ever realized that the orcas would not survive being released back into the wild, that means they would have to spend their lives in sea pins. That alone would probably kill them faster than them performing, because they have become use to people, and are socially dependent on people now. You must try weighing the negatives vs. the positives, and I do believe Sea World comes out on top of the positives.

They are so smart, must end keeping them in captivity, they need the ocean.

Can't happen. The Orcas in captivity were born, bred and raised in captivity. Unless someone has concrete data to the contrary, it would seem to be impossible for the captive Orcas to be released into the wild.

@@cats0182 I live near Sea World and a half mile away is a jetty probably a mile or so long and a quarter mile wide. No boats are allowed in, it is just for tide control. Now, take that info and go outside of the box and see if an idea comes to you.

@@ericstandefer9138 orcas bred in captivity are the same as dementia patients. They don't function properly and become extremely aggressive. Remember that orcas in SeaWorld attacked each other out of pure hostility?

Yup they are the apex predator, but mostly harmless to humans

Lakmi Dabare harmless? Any animal is unpredictable and can hurt a human. Of course they don’t hunt humans but what if it decided to grab ur arm and bring you down the sea not knowing he was hurting you but playing?
@iainamckenzie5 жыл бұрын
@@fjo9492 alote of people think they are dangerous to humans because workers at sealife and other zoo's get attacked but keeping orca's in pools is just fucking sad, compare this orca's life too a sealife orca they have soo much more living space and they put chloor in the water which can agitate their skins who knows if it's painfull or not, but orca's in sealife can get really aggressive because of those factors.

Wow great video. I had an experience back in 1997 New Zealand, two orcas came out of nowhere and decided to follow and swim around my canoe.. I won’t lie I was petrified and flight kicked in. The one was longer than the canoe I’d say about 16-20feet in length and the smaller one of the two perhaps 8-10 feet in length! It seemed to me they had human contact before, I think they wanted a free meal! Not once did they touch the canoe and the whole experience lasted about 30 seconds but felt like an hour. I can’t help but feel a little more apprehensive about going in to the sea now just incase! Amazing orcas to be respected from a distance. Just so clever and huge.

I honestly want to go swimming with some 🙏🏾 and they are just so so awesome. 🤔 I don’t believe that the two Orca’s wanted to bring harm to you, but they were just curious and possibly wanted to play or communicate with you in some kind of way. ( Just being friendly 🤷🏾♂️ ) I saw a woman swimming 🏊♀️ on a KZbin video and she was alone, and the Orcas came and they was just below her and actually went belly side up under her yet never caused the woman and harm at all. It looked as if they was her escort until she reached her destination. I have just had neck surgery, and I could hardly move, but when I watched that video, I was like 🥰 so now I fantasize about swimming with wild Orcas

@@TheFBoner TheFBoner, I’m not telling a lie. I had surgery on my neck back in September of 2021 & I could barely move & I started watching videos of people swimming with wild Orcas. I saw this lady just casually swimming 🏊♂️ on video and two Orcas escorted her until she got where she wanted & I was like 🥰😍. Ummmm look it up for yourself. Just put into your bar ( lady swims with Orcas ) and it should pop up. Look, I have did my homework on them and humans doesn’t appear to be on their food chain because the Mother teaches the children how to hunt and humans does not appear to be on their list. They eat shark livers, seals, whales, sting rays, etc etc etc but it is a very rare thing that they attack humans 🤷🏾♂️ & I believe that they keep attacking the people at Sea World because they want out of that place , as they are highly highly intelligent. Listen, I have some age on me, and I watched a Movie as a kid called ( Orca ) & that Movie as a kid, it scared 😱 the life out of me, but now that I am older, it has become a fantasy of mines to swim with the wild ones just one time and have somebody film it 🙏🏾 So its no lie at all & I am serious. I just have to save up the travel money. I’ve had some difficulty saving up money after my divorce & now my 18 year old girl is living back with me & this girl now has a baby, so you know that I am not happy about this 🤦🏾♂️ but this is a fantasy of mines & I one day am going to do it. Amen 🙏🏾

I know Orcas are the top apex predators of the ocean and could easily decimate a human if they wanted to, but given the choice between falling into the water with that and a shark... I'd still choose the Orca. They're technically dolphins so there might be some room for negotiation.
