Silversmithing: Reticulation of Silver

This short tutorial shows you the basics of using a torch to create texture through a process of reticulation . There are many different ways to texture silver, but this is my favorite. The results vary from piece to piece, so you can get some really unique surfaces. Adding a little texture sometimes can really make a design pop. I use reticulation silver - 80% silver 20% copper and I pickle to deplete the copper from the surface layer. Yields a deeper pattern than using sterling.

I have found it to be easier with thicker sheet. I usually use 18 or 20 gauge. Thanks for watching Lisa!

You don't need to quench it in between heating it?

I can’t say I’m an expert on this, but I could see no discernible difference when I quenched versus when I did not. Maybe try both ways and see which produces the better result 😀

Sorry about that Annagirlieee:). That was an early video, so it’s rough. One of these days I will make a new video about reticulation with better production quality. Video editing was a steep learning curve for me at the beginning:)
