The interest of this composition ultimately lies in its contemporary part with romantic echoes. « The Messenger » is a truly beautiful work. This ten-minute piece was composed in 1996 by Valentin Silvestrov in memory of his late wife. Her melancholy so refined, luminous and not distressing, can recall Arvo Pärt. I find Silvestrov's style much richer than Pärt's because it is less wrapped up in a minimalist approach where good melodic and harmonic ideas sometimes become boring through repetition. Silvestrov has a real sense of melody, with sometimes Mozartian accents which give this piece its unity. On my first listen it was a surprisingly pleasant discovery and since then this melody never leaves me. Romanticism is of all eras, of all ages. Mozart understood it long before us. *Lucien*
