+KaiserDragon This city isn't quite as big as you think it is. This region is made of 9x9 large city tiles, each of which has an edge length of 4 kilometers, so the whole region is 36 kilometers, squared. The corner-to-corner distance is 50.9 kilometers, which is roughly the track distance covered by the A train service in New York as it runs from Far Rockaway to northern Manhattan. Granted, the population density of this region is much higher than any real city, but I suspect that's because Simcity 4 fudges some population figures. For example, Simcity 4 lists 6000 residents living in a ~20 story tall tenement on a 64x64 meter lot. This would leave 4096 square meters of room for 300 sims on each floor, an average of 13.7 square meters (147 square feet) for each sim. Maybe this is normal by 19th century standards, but not by today's standards. (And this isn't even taking into account unusable space such as elevator shafts, pipes, and unused space around the perimeter of the lot.)

If that scares you, then don't read the part of Isaac Asimov's Foundation novel in which he describes the planet of Trantor. It's the seat of the Empire's government and entirely covered in one single city, with the city spanning upwards into the sky as well as deep into the planet's core.

Only 72 km across in any direction (about 45 miles). Not even taking traffic into account, it'd take at least an hour to get from one end to another by car. Of course, with traffic it might take more than 3 hours of driving. Walking, it would take almost 16 hours of straight walking, not counting breaks to eat, pee, rest, and question your sanity.

Is it true that the newer Nvidia drivers make Simcity 4 all buggy? Because mine stopped working all the sudden. The intro is just a black screen with the odd bit of video showing but I can still hear the music. It's still black when the region map loads up too so it's just not playable for me. If this has happened to anybody else and you have found a solution, some help would be great. I have two GTX 760's and my current driver is the 353.30 one.

+wyatt knelson Actually the problem is the new processors, in which SC4 seems not to like (LOL). However, the best thing to do is to force the game to use one core. Analytic31 Depends on your configuration. The game is old, it wasn't made for processors with multi cores. Even if you have a Core i7 you will still get trouble. So, try to make the game use only one core: in the icon right-click go to properties, than in the target box, in the end right after the quote mark, put a space and copy this -CPUCount:1. Also, the game consumes too much ram for a 2003 game, specially with mods such as NAM ,CAM and so on. So if you have at least 4gb of ram, you should have no problems.

Quite impressing! Which of the three designs at the design stage in the beginning of the video did you finally use? Which where the tax rates that you used? You said you did not use any mod's ... not even NAM? Did you only install the patches?
@kisakuru565610 жыл бұрын
ok, i saw now, you answered everything on reddit ....
@peterritchie477710 жыл бұрын
I would start each city with R9/C9/I10 for tax rates while I build out the dirty industrial to make the cash. I would save up at least 20 million before starting to build the infrastructure. Then once the zones were made, infrastructure built, dirty industrial destroyed, I would keep R9/C9 and put Dirty industrial at 11, Manufacturing at 11, and industrial high tech at 9. After the city reached the right slump, I would decrease the rates to 8 across the board except dirty industrial and manufacturing which I would keep at 11. No NAM. No Add-ons, No mods. From my reddit post: I chose the left design, the cross. It had the least pollution problems, lower cost for education and hospitals (because the res is nearly all clumped in 4 areas) but the worst traffic problems. The center design, the columns, had the most pollution problems, and pretty bad traffic problems, and it was moderately expensive for education/hospitals. The right side design, the scatter, had the best traffic outcome, moderate pollution, but was extremely expensive for education and hospitals since I needed heavy coverage across the entire map. The cross was also the best for putting each city side by side, as the residential zoning from one city could potentially work in any nearby city. It also allowed me to put airports, and waste zoning close together between groups of 4 cities.

@jonas33336 жыл бұрын
Nice work! However, wouldn't you be able to push the population even higher by continuing to enter the cities for a while in a rotation? It appears to me, since the game works with regional aspects in mind, that nearby cities affect the population of each other and I do that with my considerably smaller cities to pump up the population from time to time.
@peterritchie47775 жыл бұрын
That's kinda what I did, but stopped after a while because there came a point where it cycled from losing growth and population and then regrowing to around the same number once it hit close to the peak. I think it had to do with the equal number of zones in the tiles, where you evetually only give and take the same amount of jobs to surrounding tiles so it doesn't give any boost after a full grow out.

It has been tried. Installing NAM into a region that has already been made screws up large cities like this. It causes all sorts of glitches, and the first few cities I tried to log into went totally tits-up and I couldn't get them back working again. I should mention I have since installed NAM and have plans on a new project. I had heard of other Simcity 4 players making larger regions than this with a ton of mods and cheats, and I plan on beating them using only NAM and some better planning. I don't want to say too much, but lets just say that it will be... much bigger... I have no timeline on this, it will take me a lot longer than the last one featured in this video.

how do you make mega cities like this? i can only make a city one tile big
@splashimi10 жыл бұрын
Impressive work. What's even more amazing is how you got the whole region to run so smoothly. My modern system chugs after filling up one large tile. Simcity 4 wasn't designed to run on multi-core machines, after all. What's your secret?
@peterritchie477710 жыл бұрын
In development I put the game on it's lowest settings. I do all the building of infrastructure/zoning on pause, and when I allow it to build out between stages of development I put it on map/zone view and it runs as if I only have a small village in play. There are about 10 stages of development in total that have cues that tell me what to do next. For instance, after any of my cities hit about 300,000 population, I begin to build the hydrogen plants, and begin to raise health and education funding. At about 700,000 or at the first major slump in demand, I put the tax rates to 8% (down 1% each) and it gives the whole city a compounded boost that lasts for a few years.

@Tezunegari10 жыл бұрын
How did you get the city areas big enough? They have to be 768x768 tiles to contain your city blocks from the design stage. SC4 only supports 64x64, 128x128 and 256x256 city areas... as far as I know at least.
@peterritchie477710 жыл бұрын
They are all Large City Tiles, the 256x256 sized ones. The design stage is slightly confusing to many people because of the way I used multiple levels of blocks within blocks. The best description I have made is in this post on Reddit: imgur.com/a/lLx91 In the design stage, I was using "transit blocks" as I decided to call them (since they are the foundation for the subway lines) which are 20 tiles by 20 tiles. There were 144 of these transit blocks in each city. The smaller blocks, as seen in the video, I called Sub-Blocks, 9 of which make up a transit block. 9 Transit blocks together make up a mega-block, which are separated by avenues.

@peterritchie47779 жыл бұрын
+dnissen2012 This region is 36km X 36km. Roughly 22 miles X 22 miles. I had some trouble the first time I tried to make a region too much larger because the save file becomes absolutely huge and it was one of the first times I saw the game crash without mods added in. It is possible... but I would say go easy with it and test it before going in.

How to Build a Mega City Part One: "Dirty Money" Here is the tutorial on how to make the mega-city. There are 8 other parts uploaded as well!
@WhiteSlift9 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if the energy consumption is correct? You have about 100 million inhabitants and you said you have about 324 hydrogen power plants, so is the energy consumption of those 100 million people about the same as, say, the energy consumption of Germany (~80 million people) ?
@peterritchie47779 жыл бұрын
WhiteSlift I like questions that I don't know the answer to. So here's what I found: Germany has a per capita energy usage rate of around 7,000 kwh, multiplied by 82 million people is 574,000,000,000 kwh (574 billion kilo watt hours). Now, the Simcity 4 Hydrogen power plant is supposed to produce 16,000 mwh (mega-watt hours) per month. I'll be honest the 324 number was based on the average city I made times 81 tiles in the region, so it could be more or less by a bit, but 324 times 16,000 mwh is 5,184,000 mwh per month. Now, the problem I had here is I am not sure how compatible the numbers are for a comparison. Do we just take the 574 billion kilo watt hours and adjust the zeros to 574 million mega-watt hours? If so, the scale doesn't match up at all. 574 million mega watt hours and 5 million mega watt hours is a big difference when the population difference is the opposite (82 million people vs 107 million people).
@WhiteSlift9 жыл бұрын
Peter Ritchie Very interesting research. Thanks!
@valhar20009 жыл бұрын
+Peter Ritchie I think you are comparing the yearly energy use of Germany with the monthly use of energy in your region. Though it's still a lot more. According to my calculations, 324 power plants would support 8 million Germans, so it seems that sims are a lot more energy efficient that Germans.
@peterritchie47779 жыл бұрын
+Lorenzo Benito Yeah, the numbers don't compare easily because the game doesn't measure power the same way we do in real life, they just use broad numbers. You might be right, but since the game doesn't actually say the timeframe of energy use besides KWH, so I had to just assume.

+Cullvion , I prefer SimCity 2000 myself. Now if some of the better features of the SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4 games were implemented into an updated version of SimCity 2000, including more disasters, then you would have the penultimate SimCity game. Also, Will Wright is wrong about not including religion and morals into his games because, like it or not, they DO, in fact, control how everything from laws to buildings, cultural events, and city aesthetics are made.

How much money did it cost to build all of that? I bet if this were real daytime temperatures would be virtually unlivable due to the extreme increase of surface area for the sun to warm.. I wonder what winter would be like. Plus what about all the sewer systems? Where does that and trash wastes go??? No highways? :( Although, even with highways traffic would be a nightmare. It would be interesting if one could regulate the number of cars on the road to encourage bicycles, subway (underground), monorail (above ground), and walking. Perhaps if there were a city like this maybe the overall concept of city building would be radically different -- perhaps there would be 4-person pod monorails that connect to every building. Then there is also underground cities; living spaces built for many floors below ground level. In fact, what if living spaces all existed below ground? The only thing about that is people would become depressed not seeing daylight ... well perhaps the scheduling and workflow of "work" in itself would be quite different compared to today's world. Perhaps there would be a mandatory leave of longer vacations, or shorter work days, or shorter work weeks; it might be a combination of both shorter work days and shorter work weeks allowing more time for people to go out and enjoy the sunshine. ha, then again, how would you enjoy the sunshine in a city such as this? I think people would hate to live in such a city.
@BenMcIlwain10 жыл бұрын
What the heck are you talking about? There's no added surface area to warm. The solar flux is 1,000 Watts/m^2 anywhere on Earth (adjusted for latitude and season, of course). It doesn't matter if you're in a field somewhere or in the middle of a dense city. It might be several degrees warmer because of the urban heat island effect (essentially, all of the waste heat created in a city warms it up), but that has nothing to do with the Sun and everything to do with human industry.

In game cash: It cost around $15 million dollars for infrastructure, another 2 million for infrastructure that was designed to be added after each city was above 500,000 residents. Then every 5 in game years I had to destroy each power plant, water pump, and waste to energy plant (around $600,000 each time) and rebuild them to keep everything working smoothly. That's not including additional municipal buildings, stadiums, zoos, and whatnot. Highways were not cost or space effective. There is one city in the grid with a quad highway setup with 4 major interchanges, but the space they took up did not make up for the slight benefit in traffic. The highways simply got congested the second I built them in that city, and it was one of the smallest cities at full buildout at around 1.2 million residents. The space the interchanges took up caused me to further congest the rest of the city to fit more people in, causing even more traffic problems around those areas.

How did you solve the unemployment issue, you know, when a briefcase icon appears above your residential zones? You see, I have 3 cities which have around 120-150k inhabitants and each of them has around 250k-300k job positions, but I'm still getting that icon and whenever I click on those buildings it says "travel time to work: long" or something like that.
@peterritchie477710 жыл бұрын
One thing that holds true in simcity 4 is the RCI 1:1:1 formula. Especially if you are running the game in vanilla like I do, the sims do not want to travel far for jobs, so it's good to keep it all in the city. try balancing your city out to have equal parts residential zoning, commercial zoning, and industrial zoning. For instance, if you plan on having 100 tiles of residential zoning, put 100 tiles commerical, and 100 tiles of industrial close by. If you have a bit of cash saved up, put dirty industrial and manufacturing on the backburner by upping their tax rates by 3 or 4 % above everything else.

There are 81 individual cities in the region, I made sure each one is in the black fiscally before calling the region finished. Some have a surplus of $4,000 per month, and a savings of $10 million; Others are doing much better with $50,000 surplus per month and $400 million in savings. The actual tax income before adding in expenses is always above $300,000 per month. I think the largest and most wealthy city in the region has an income of $405,000, and a surplus of $30,000 for each budget. I was going to put the game up for download right away, but hearing a bit of nitpicking from people on other sites has me wanting to fix up a few minor details before giving it away. I will probably post it to www.reddit.com/r/simcity4 when I do finally get it all uploaded if you are interested.

I also refuse to Mod (except expanding the size of the region). Build a dirty city first. Build the cheapest power, basic requirements, and lots of dirty industry, and then build a residential neighborhood a drivable distance away. Tuck a tiny bit of commercial in there and try to get a good revenue stream. After you get the money coming in from the dirty industry, then start cleaning stuff up, and building outwards more.

@peterritchie47779 жыл бұрын
sunyboy333 It is the best way, and in general it really does help with power as well. I always keep at least 4 tiles of landfill around so I can see visually if I forgot to rebuild the W2E when they start to deteriorate. With mods there are other ways, but with the vanilla game W2E is the way to go, and it doesn't pollute too much if you keep them in a corner.
