Bosnian and Macedonian are both South Slavic languages that share the same origin, but how close are they? In this video we explore some of the commonalities, as well as differences, between the two languages, with Petar (Macedonian speaker) and Miralem (Bosnian speaker).
If you would like to participate in a future video, be sure to follow and message me on Instagram: / bahadoralast
The Bosnian language (bosanski / босански) is mainly used by Bosniaks and one of the official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnian is also recognized as a minority language in Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Kosovo.
Macedonian (македонски) is an Eastern South Slavic language, and the official language of North Macedonia.

Something i’ve wondered recently: related sign languages could be a fun and interesting video series? To clarify: I don’t necessarily mean sign languages used in countries with the same spoken language but from different sign language families like ASL and BSL are. I mean *sign languages* that are related. (However while typing this I realised comparing similarities and differences between Auslan and BSL (which use the same alphabet and are somewhat related) and then having someone who can sign in ASL there to demonstrate how it is different could be great to further demonstrate that sign language isn’t universal.) (Disclaimer I’m not Deaf and this is just an idea, so 100% actually ask people from that community how best to do this if it were to be done.)

@@zannawu5749 It’s very interesting. As far as I can gather from looking for scientific papers (and only skimming through abstracts n conclusions lmao sorry), research into the relationship between sign languages and their families is still ongoing to understand the relationship more since linguistics hasn’t really fully caught up to sign languages yet. (There’s a great free to read review from 2022 by Justin M. Power titled “Historical Linguistics of Sign Languages: Progress and Problems” on progress that’s been made and why there are still things to solve, i wanna get round to reading it all). So I’d always love to see more videos of sign language users comparing their signs and dialects. Oops text wall but yeah. I’d love this channel to feature sign languages.

Izlegov - I went out, Miralem, you have almost the same in dialectal Bosnian "ižljeći". Ižljegao sam iz kuće. Turšija is preserves, isn't it? In French it is, in any case. Moliv is olovka. I learned a new word - mliječnica. In some regions (exemple Lika) they say roba for clothes, sımilar to ruba. Дыра is also hole In Russian. As always, I enjoyed very much this edition with nearby languages. Bravo, momci! Thank you, Bahador!

I do like that you mentioned these words, I am fascinated with the East Bosnian Slavic dialect and words. Some of them are good representations of our old language! I have learnt from the east Bisnians that they use šća more even when they ask something, the šćakavski dialect being more represented there! I belong to central Bosnia so I used the idioms and words from my surroundings, especially my “uncorrected” grandmother, she would never speak ijekavian! The whole of my mother's family still speaks pure ikavian! Darling Bahador has trimmed a bit of that part of the video (where I used ikavian), but that is to be understood as it would go on for a long time otherwise! Regarding Ižljeći as a verb, I acknowledge that it might exist in some parts of Bosnia but for my family, it means hen hatching eggs, that is the only context. The verb iskidat’ was a part of the idiom in terms of clearing up or throwing out the same as ispeći kahvu ie to bake coffee (one boils water for coffee)! Lastly other words in the video which I mentioned but they were not in the video and that I find them fascinating were daždevnjak and nevista! Many thanks for your kind words! You are one big soul!

Yeah in Bosnian for some reason they use letter ć instead of k when it comes to adaption of words that came with Ottoman Empire. My grandfather used k as he spoke Ottoman Turkish for example k for köfte for example but most of Bosnians and others use sound ć like ćufte for some reason which I found to be strange but maybe it was copied by locals from some soldiers etc that actually used that sound instead of k (either erroneously or maybe form the region they came from it was pronounced like that rightly or wrongly) ...or they simply chose ć sound but it is weird as k is not hard to pronounce ....this goes for many world like šućur instead of šukur or šukyur...there are many instances and myself am curious what exactly is the real reason for using ć instead of k.

great observation, dzevad. i noticed that too. like köprü (ćuprija), kömürü (ćumur). in both instances it seems that use of letters ö and ü has to do something with the way how bosnians say these words. there are other instances of turcisms in bosnia with extremely minor variations. for example bodrum vs podrum, etc. there is one professor who published great work on this topic. i am planning do dig into this more and do deeper research. i bet it has to do with ottoman language. are you turk w. bosnian roots? btw. the guy in this video spoke something that it is not normal way how people from bosnia speak. his native language is english. he has poor control over bosnian, so he was not the best representative of the language....

bosnian guy does not have the best control over bosnian. this is already 2nd time to see the similar situation in bahador's videos. i guess you don't have pool of good representatives for bosnian/serbian/cro language. this guy used some twisted terms that noone would use today. most likely he learned language from his parents. his native language is english, as evidenced by his reaction to the word of maydanoz (there was another one, but I forgot). his choice of sentences and order of words are not typical, and are either made up (auto translated from google) or used from the limited pool of knowledge learned by grandparents. come on, miralem, who in their right mind would say "jutrom rano ona bi ustala, iskidala staju te pomozla kravu, ili "dica su kanticom prema krcevini istrcala da beru jagode"...... this is not normal way of talking. this order of words is made up or is from 15th century. no wonder that the other guy could not understand word "iskidala"... noone would use that word??? iskidala means she tore apart, not cleaned. you said bosnians often use word krcevina, but they don't . also, that mushroom is not called mlijesnica (maybe 300 years ago) but mlijecnica. he also could have told the macedonian guy - hey, mlijecnica is a type of mushrom (gljiva) but he seemed to not to know what "gljiva" is... the macedonian guy speaks fluently. i can tell it is his native language. i noticed in macedonian interesting words siseto - this comes from turkish sisa and, magdanoz comes from turksih word maydanoz. macedonian guy talks waaaay toooo much, he needs to slow down and know the measure how much is enoung, but who am i to say after writting a book here, but this bosnian guy irritated me so much that i had to type my impressions here. anyway, miralem, i am sending greetings and i am, actually, prooud of you that you kept knowledge of the language of your ancestors. great job. huh.... cannot belive how much i wrote. loooooool. bahador - great job!!!!! next time i hope to see native speakers (with the stronger control over their native languages) who can show how well we can understand each other.

Variation of a word could be different in the region he or his parents are from so it could be 'S' instead of 'C' Verb 'iskidati' does exist, especially in certain contexts that does not mean to tear apart, it exists in Montenegrin aswell. In this context it means to clean up. His language is not standard bosnian, but it can still be hard. It is a word which is used in every village house around Zenica and furthermore - people know its meaning ! As such it is very interesting it is not what it immediately means but what it is used for as a slang that goes 10 century in the past! When the Russians took this word from us in northern Bulgaria as Scythians they had no idea (it is a slang for God’s sake), but what I am proud about especially is that they have kept it in its original meaning! What an achievement and acknowledgement to the Bosnian people and culture too! We kept it! I must say that I am exceptionally proud of our Bosnian linguistic heritage! Macedonian is a variety of South Slavic. JUST like Serbo-Croatian and Bulgarian are. Do you notice how the rest of the academic world continues with the understanding that the Slavic Balkan languages form a dialect continuum. No one agrees this should all be called Bulgarian. Despite the fact that Ancient Macedonian was Hellenic - that has zero relevancy today. No one speaks an Ancient Macedonian dialect of Greek. You can pretend all you want, no linguist even remotely agrees. The Slavic dialects of Macedonia, were born there, once the Slavic language moved to the Balkans more than 1500 years ago. You having a problem that a Slavic dialect is named after where its spoken, is irrelevant. Are you going to cry that France is named after the German Franks, but they speak Latin? Cry harder. Saying the Balkan people are unrelated or that Greeks are pure Greeks due to language, is ridiculous. Cope harder chauvinists and nationalists. Look at the title of this video: no one intelligent cares about the fake Greek/Bulgarian plight against Macedonian.

It is patently false, as any respected linguist or polyglot would swiftly discern through their extensive knowledge. As a practitioner of Koine Greek, I can confidently assert that the opposite is indeed verifiable! It is indeed the case that all Slavic languages are descended from the ancient tongue of Macedonia, and the Bosnian dialect stands as an especially authentic variation thereof, considering the proliferation of our people. Even the Demotic inscriptions contained on the Rosetta Stone can be identified as Macedonian, and it is astonishingly simple for even the most tender of Slavic children to translate their semantic import. Bosnians jumped on the bandwago thus I have read the term Serbocroatobosnian as well. It is all a circus. I am Macedonian. A real one. Because I am Greek. Skopje lies north of Macedonia has no right to claim the Greek name of a Greek region just because geopolitical games want it to be so. Correct I'm a Romanian Aromanian(Vlach) and we all call Macedonians "Bulgarians" because we know what they are: VOLGARIANS

That is fundamentally not true on many levels. Its Macedonian, cry a river. Modern Macedonian is Slavic. Its also spoken by Greeks. Ever heard of history? The Slavs moved to the Balkans and Greece. CRY A RIVER. No one calls it Vardarska Banovina. That a provincial name, each Yugoslav province was named after a river. You literally don't know anything but emotions.

@@saebica Bulgarian is a social identity. The genetics of the Balkans is shared. As I don't identify as a Bulgarian, and none in my family for as far back as 350 years comes from anywhere even near Bulgaria. If it helps you for small-minded reasons to call me a Bulgarian, you do that. Doesn't change my identity, my nation or language's name. Cope and cope more.

@@tangocash342 You are talking nonsense. I clearly understand every Serbian dialect, including Bosnian dialect (Serbian with Turkish loan words). I only don't understand Bulgarian, about 30%. Bosnian language doesn't exist, it was manufactured in 1990s. Montenegrin also. Macedonian is basically mixed Serbian and Bulgarian. Bosnia is just a geographical term, not an ethnicity. Never was until the 20th century. Let's not forget they called themselves Muslims ( like nationality) and only in 1990s the new term was created - Bosniaks. All medieval Bosnian Kings never ever called themselves Bosnians, Bosniaks or anything similar. King Tvrtko was from the same line as Serbian Kings. He was orthodox, crowned in Serbian monastery, with the Serbian title, clearly speaking Serbian. I'm historian (not in Serbia, but in US ) so need to argue with me with your non existent facts. The only truth is that Bosnians today are muslimized Serbs and Croats, that they converted because they didn't want to get genocided, they got benefits, lower taxes, etc. Nothing wrong with that, but don't claim you are a separate nation, when all the Bosnian Bans and Kings proclaimed themselves as Serbians and Orthodox.

Greeks don't care if you want to claim its different than Bulgarian. It simply historically inaccurate to claim a Slavic language has anything to so with ancient Macedoni. This is the issue. I personally think the people of Northern Macedonia are partially related to the ancient Macedonians as many have Greek DNA, which has been mixed with Slavic. It is the historically innacurate claims that no rational person, Greek or not, can go along with.

@@Demetrios123 Nobody claims that the ancient Macedonians spoke a Slavic language that is impossible due to the fact that we got here in the 6 century in this era, 900 years or so after Alexander. So nobody claims that they spoke a Slavic language that's silly at best and stupid at worst. We arrived here from what is today Poland both we and the Srbs , the Bulgaras have tartar and gypsy roots so i can't speak on their behave, the thing you must understand that many of the original Macedonians where assimilated in our society and that is why we also should not be discredited as non Macedonians, We share as much with them as we share with Poland. Being here for more then 1500 years 517 Under the turks but even now we never forgot our roots and even now ethnic Macedonians are 99% Orto Christian despite their oppression. Learn about how many towns cities and villages where renamed once greece took control, learn of the ethnic cleansing that happend their, my people there not even aloud to speak their Language but where told you are greek and must speak greek, that is the problem not the Ancient history part, if we did not agree with the history we would not have agreed to the Prespa Agreement, i can go on and on on what really happend to our people there but greeks will never admit to it, so whats the point?
