The Talysh language (تالشی / Tolışə / Tолышә) is classified as a Northwestern Iranian language and is primarily spoken in the southern regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as the northern parts of the Iranian provinces of Gilan and Ardabil.
The Gilaki language (گیلکی / Giləki) also belongs to the Northwestern branch of Iranian languages and is primarily spoken in Iran's Gilan Province.

As an Armenian, I love the minority Iranic languages like Gilaki, Talyshi, Tabari, etc. especially. There are so many similarities! Of course this applies to any Iranic language but these northern ones especially are so "familiar" in sound to me. Sending love to my Iranian brothers and sisters! I think this must be Sorani or some other Southern Kurdish dialect because in Kurmanji we say Keçık for girl. rûnıshtın for to sit and bıçe for go.

I am half Kurmanji and half Dimili Zaza from Siverek. I speak mostly Kurmanji but also know some Dimili. I heard allot of words similar. For example bıshi in Talysh is like Kurmanji bıçe for go. Uyeh in Gilaki is like uca in Dimli. Or jîr in Gilaki is very similar to jêr in Kurmanji and both mean down. In Kurmanji + Dimli both we use pird for bridge, keçık in Kurmanji and Keynek in Dimli for girl. I am not sure but I think in Sorani Kurdish they use Kiji for girl like Gilaki Kija.

So happy to see you have finally made a video on Gilaki. It was also nice to see my friend Jeyhun he is very informed in different dialects of Talyshi. I also speak Biē-pesh (western) Gilaki. The girls are well informed tho they have a strong Persian accent (they don’t speak like natives) and they do talk about the æ sound however they can’t properly pronounce it either. Btw the sentence on 18:59 in Gilaki is: Sukule (or tela) nxana, ruj nebe?

I'm also a Gilak and I speak the Daylamite dialect of Gilaki (aka Galeshi) wich is spoken in mountainous and foothill regions of eastern Gilan and western Mazandaran.

Bahador! thanks for this, man. I'm a Gilak, and I'm very flattered that you finally did this. And I'm very glad that I'm seeing these young ladies living abroad are so good at Gilaki. Talysh has three main dialects: Northern, Central, Southern. Central, and Southern dialects are only existed in Iran, Gilan province. Gilaki has three main dialects as well: BiyəPəs(in the West of the SepidRud), BiyəPish(in the East of the SepidRud), and Dəyləmi which is spoken in Western and Southwestern mountainous areas. But both of these languages are more like two dialect continuums. They differ a little bit from one region to the next one. There's one important thing; Tabari people, people of Mazandaran and Gorgan, call their language Geleki, and I can mostly understand them. Today's linguists say that Gilaki is spoken across the Southern coast of Caspian sea, from Western Gilan to Southeastern Golestan.

Great video, Bahador. I recently had encountered a kurdish speaking lady here in us and it seems kurdish is pretty similar to a dialect called Vanji which is spoken in Vanj in province of Badakhshan in Tajikistan. It would be interesting to see the similarities between them. Cheers!

Vanji is not really similar to Kurdish because Vanji was a former Pamiri language which got replaced by Persian. The similarities can be explained by the fact that Vanji (as a former east iranic language) share archaic features with some of the north-western iranic languages, also the Grammer of vanj is mainly based on Persian (another western iranic language).

Dear Bahador, "خایه" /xâje/ in Persian is also a cognate of "Egg" in English, "Uya" in Talysh, "Ovum/Ovo" in Latin, "Avgo" in Greek and so on. I realized it talking to my Swiss-German speaking friend when I heard her pronunciation of the word "Ei" and found how similar our pronunciations were (of course you drop the خ /x/ in German). Funny thing is in both Persian and German, the word can be used to refer to either eggs, or balls.

Interesting similarities with Juhuri (Judeo-Tat), which is also mainly spoken in Azerbaijan like Talysh. Juhuri is very much a variety of Persian though. It's very important to do more to preserve these languages which have sadly been diminishing.

I'm generally agreed with you that Iranian population have a similar haplogroup and even history somehow. However, Turks have ruled about 900 years in this area and have an enormous impact on language and culture of Iranians. In contrast, Iranian have even more impact on turkic language and culture aswell due to Doerfer's investigations. In contemporary era democracy is more prior than your facistic ideas. This is what it is. You must accept it. Now we have about 20 milion turks in Iran based on Statiscal Center of Iran. They have more sympathy on their actual language than a dead language related to centuries ago. Their mother tongue is what their parent and grandparent spoke. Turkey or Azerbaijan is not the land of Turks. Iran is not the land of Persians. They are just some countries for their citizens. For instance, even if some Chinese people migrate to Azerbaijan they have the right to ask for their language and culture. I accept Ancient Azeri language is our history aswell but give me a dictionary of just 10000 words (which is too low for a modern language) and I promise to learn it and teach it for the next generation. It is interesting how the relationship between Caspian dialects is similar to the relationship between Kurdish dialects. In General the Northwestern Iranic branch can be divided into 2. major branches. Group 1: Kurdish Group 2: Caspian Then you have some transitional languages/dialects like Balochi. Or Old Azari which is like a bridge between the Kurdish and Caspian groups.

Old Azari is very much like Talysh and Tati. In the past they were called Pahlavi.

@@IranAzadLoading Pahlavi was a name used for all Northwest Iranic tongues. Some South Kurdish variants are called Feili (Pahli) to this day. Old Azari would be somewhere inbetween. At the end of the day there has to have been a transitional language between Kurdish and Caspian groups.

@@mohsen3411 Their genetic profile shows that their primary core is Northwest Iranic and similar to Kurds and Talysh Their genetic profile seems to be around 70% descend from Old Azeri (Atropatene). 20% others like some additional Scythian, Persian and some Levantine admixture. And 10% Turkic. They are overall locals and primarily like acculturated Talysh and Kurds. A reminder Azerbaijan had once a massive Kurdish population and still has.

These languages are also very similar to Kurdish. I speak Sorani Kurdish and these are our versions of the words spoken here. I think Kurdish and Gilaki are very similar in particular Go -> bcho بچۆ There -> Awye ئەوێ Rice field -> bizhar بژار (this one I’m not sure, bizhar could mean wheat field as well) Bridge -> pird پرد Girl -> kich, kizh کچ، کیژ Not to bring -> some Kurds say nahawardn نهاوردن Down -> zher ژێر To sit -> danishtn دانیشتن

We used to say "Sed" for Ladder in Shiraz! I dont know exactly how Nardeban entered our language. My grandfather and father all used to say "Sed" which is so similar to Syrd or Serdi

All my long life I thought Gilaki is exactly the same as Persian with an accent and the only difference is Boshoo booshoo ma trora nakham.. Funny, since my dad spoke Gilaki. Very educational! Thank you!

Azerbaijan government is close allies with Israel so they are against Iran and Iranian languages. Talysh is an Iranian langauge, with no status in Azerbaijan.
