In this video, we compare some of the similarities between Turkish and Albanian, two languages that belong to different families, with Şimal, a Turkish speaker from Turkey and Klajd, an Albanian speaker from Albania, challenging each other with a list of words and sentences. Please contact us on Instagram if you have any questions or feedback:

The Turkish language (Türkçe), which is also referred to as Istanbul Turkish, is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages, with most of its native speakers living in Western Asia, and significant group of speakers in Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Northern Cyprus, Greece, the Caucasus, and other parts of Europe and Central Asia. Ottoman Turkish, which was a variation of the Turkish spoken today, influenced many parts of Europe during the time that the Ottoman Empire expanded. When the modern Turkish republic was established, one of Atatürk's Reforms consisted of changing the Ottoman Turkish alphabet with a Latin alphabet. Today, Turkish is recognized as a minority language in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Iraq, Macedonia, and Romania. Meanwhile, Albanian occupies an independent branch within the Indo-European language family. It is an official language in Albania and Kosovo and has official minority status in Italy, Romania, Montenegro, Serbia, and Macedonia.

For those who ask, the drink we had in the beginning is called "raki/rakı" or "rakia", a very popular drink in both Turkey and Albania. Considered the national drink, it is a part of the culture and cuisine of both nations. As many of you know, since our daughter was born earlier this year, I took a 9-month parental leave off work. In January I will be going back to work, so our plan is to change the weekly video uploads to every 2 weeks. Thank you for understanding and for your support. Turkey is the country with most albanians where millions are full or partial descedants of albanians. In istanbul there is a neighbourhood called arnavutkoy(the village of albanians). The mayor of bursa a few years ago was an albanian. Such a great friendship between our people. Selam turkish kardesler from arnavutluk

@Tony Camaj I am albanian and there is 0 historical evidence about your assumption. Not a document for any type of massacre, genocide or forced conversion. Actually our people has never had a better historical period than during ottomans. Tirana(today capital), Korca etc were established during that period. Berat, Shkoder, Durres, Prizren, Uskup etc a large part maybe half and more of area of those cities are built and developed during ottomans and were centers of trade for all balkans. See now in 21 century no one knows where those impovereshed cities are on the map let alone being top economical hotspots.

Tony Camaj I don't need ur permission to call myself an albanian since me and my forefathers speak this language for centuries. Im not denying ur grandfather house story but it was sporadic cases for rightful punishment for some crime or it could be injustice as every state has done in history. Ottomans were not angels that gave everyone flowers and free food but their rule it was not either a systematic violence, torture and massacre wanting to eleminate native population bcs it would be recorded in western europe documents(vatican and italy are just a sea away from us so they would know smth), folklore etc. The dictator enver hoxha for only 45 years managed to eradicate all mosques and churches and religion from most people hearts(+2million). Ottomans ruled here for more than 450 years. If even one or two sultans wanted christians in albania(not more than 150k) eleminated you think there would be any church still standing today?

Albanians say LEKË. That's Albania official currency. We say "Sa lekë ke?" "Sa lekë kushton/bën." Meaning How much Lek (Money) you have. Or How much Lek does it cost. Para is almost inexcistent in here. The closest word for Para is more like Pare. It's practically a street word.

Nice episode :) As a bulgarian I thought at first, that "kapak acik" was a pretty random sentence, since in our language ачик/acik could be both adjective or adverb meaning visible, clear, transparent, obvious...something like that. Which is actually the same as open, but just a different perspective. Also чакмак/cakmak in bulgarian is not a modern-day lighter, but that piece of metal used together with a stone to start a fire (don't know the english word). We could still get it, but with a bit more of explanation.

Salam/Hello Aneeza. Kaise ho? I am Albanian, and know some Urdu. If I tell you that there are many similar words between Albanian and Urdu. The connection is obvious Albanian borrowed words from Turkish, thus Arabic and Persian, just like Urdu, where Hindustani speaking muslims borrowed words from Persian, Arabic and Turkic languages. You mentioned about taya. In Urdu you also say "khala" referring to the maternal aunt. We have a similar word "halla" in Albania, but we refer to the paternal aunt. So again similar meaning but from the opposite parent. You have the word "sabun" in Urdu and in Turkish which is "sapun" in Albanian. And so many other words of Arabic-Persian origin. Dukhan-dyqan (shop). You call sugar as "chini" but also "shakar". In Albanian is "sheqer" (sounds like shecher or sheker). We use the word "ilaç" (ilach) which is medicine, similar to the Urdu word Ilaj (this comes from Arabic). And then the famous word persian word bazaar, which is often pronounced as "pazar" In Albanian but I think in Turkish as well. Of course, in Grammar, Urdu is in essence a North Indian language, thus the word order is like Hindi, Subject + object + Verb rather than in other languages such as English where you have Subject + Verb + Object.
