Despite belonging to different language families, Turkish and Kurdish, have a lot of similar words, in addition to the many loanwords that they have in common. We showcase some of the commonalities between the Kurdish and Turkish languages, as Şimal, a Turkish speaker and Keyhan, a Sorani Kurdish speaker will showcase some of the commonalities between the two languages in a friendly manner. The reason we opted to do Sorani Kurdish for this video is due to the fact that Kurmanji speakers are generally fluent in Turkish as well, as is the case the Kurmanji speakers we know.
Please be mindful of the fact that Keyhan has Asperger syndrome and show him the respect he deserves for having the courage to reach out to us to take part in this video.
For all those who are familiar with the script. In the Sorani Kurdish writing system, vowels are almost always written as separate letters, instead of the original format of the writing system in which certain vowels are shown by diacritics or often excluded. You will notice this throughout the video in the subtitles, it is not a mistake.
If you live in Toronto or the surrounding areas, speak a language that has not been featured on our channel and would like to participate in a future video, and/or if you have any suggestions or feedback, please contact us on Instagram:

Sorani (سۆرانی, Soranî) also known as Central Kurdish (کوردیی ناوەندی, Kurdîy nawendî) is a Kurdish dialect spoken in Iraqi Kurdistan, as well as the Kurdistan Province, Kermanshah Province, and West Azerbaijan Province of western Iran. It is one of the two official languages of Iraq, along with Arabic.
Turkish is the most widely spoken of the Turkic languages and has official status in Tukey and Cyprus. In addition, Turkish is recognized as a minority language in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Iraq, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Romania. Although the majority of Turkish speakers reside in Turkey, large number of Turkish speakers reside in Germany, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, as well as parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. In the 1920s, after the Turkish Republic was established, Atatürk replaced the Ottoman Turkish alphabet with a Latin alphabet.

Wow i didnt know that ciger actually means "liver" in Turkish. I am Greek and my grandparents (who came from the Black Sea region of Turkey and were billingual in Greek and Turkish) were sometimes calling me "cigerim" or "yavrum" when i was a small kid. I knew what "yavrum" meant but i thought "cigerim" was something similar. I have to agree that it is kind of a strange thing to say to someone :-)

Ausländer, Well, it's not any stranger than "Apple of my eyes" which in English, beside its anatomical meaning, is also a euphemism for darling or dear exactly like what "liver" stands for in Kurdish, Turkish and Persian. If you really think about it both expressions refer to body parts which are very important and quite precious for the body. The expression doesn't say that "you are a piece of liver", it says "you are my liver", that is "you are as precious and as indispensable to my body as my own liver". Kinda gross, I know! But not any grosser than "apple of one's eye"! :-)

Like Kurdish, in Urdu as well, we pronounce it with "J" , as in, Jiger/jigar. And even our parents/grandparents would tell us as you are my "Jigar ka tukrra ((Piece) - Piece of liver)). Which is like you are super special or dear to me. Like you don't have to go for literal meaning but the feel of it :P xd

Why when you said "You're my heart" it is romantic, but "You're my liver" isn't. :) Ok, it's strange but ciger is important for us too. And I love to eat ciger :D

The ward Çiğar/Gigar is used to identify the biological relation to the person you are refering to or basically a relative, brother sister, etc. It is not used to anyone who you don't share the blood line with. An english equivalent to this could be Blood, for example; You are my blood. In turkic languages it is used in same context but we say you are my liver. In Uzbek we say "Sen meni Gigarim" .

Any turk that stands up to their state and works for stopping their century long ethnocidal policies towards minorities, Kurds & others, are definitely my brothers/sisters. Sadly I hear the "kurds & turks are brothers" rhetorics too often by people that at the state time support their state and are completely against any real linguistic or political rights for Kurds. I hope one day the first kind will outnumber the second, but it's sadly not the situation today.

"Ciğerim" means " my liver. " It actually has a nice meaning. It could mean " I can't breathe if you're not " . Or " i can breathe cause your presence." And also older people believe that "To be very upset makes tuberculosis." And your lungs (in turkish also called ciğer) damaged. If you call someone " ciğerim " that means, "you are like my healthy lungs. Glad to have you" or " I'd be sorry if I wasn't with you. I'd be tuberculosis. " Yeah. It's a complex thing.

As a native Urdu speaker, I could understand almost all words! Listing the cognates for the words I could recognise and meanings of them in Urdu: 1) Har kisee (everyone/anyone) 2) Dushman (enemy) 3) Anaar (pomegranate) 4) Khush ( In Urdu, it means happy) 5) Khoon (Blood) 6) Jahaan (the 'n' is a nasal sound, not fully pronounced. It mean the world) 7) Aarzoo (Wish/Desire) 8) Dars (Lesson/Lecture) 9) Khalq (Creation, as in God's creation) 10) Jaan (literally meaning life/soul, but used as a term of endearment) Jaanam also means the same. 11) Jigar (Liver, but also used as a term of endearment) From the last sentence, I understood the word for nation - which in Urdu is "Millat" So interesting! Great video... To be honest, I didn’t think this video was going to happen, but I’m glad it did. I’m all for brotherhood. PS: Not all Kurmançî speakers understand Turkish. Can we see a “Kurmançî & Turkey” language challenge? Also, Kurdish & Arabic

Well, "ciğer" does not only mean liver, it is the lungs also. When you call someone "ciğerim" it is not "my liver", it is "my lung", which implies that "you are the source of breath". In a way, you say, you are in my chest, close to my heart.

Unfortunately the translation of the Kurdish word "welat" is not "millet" (nation) or "milliyet" (nationality). WELAT means homeland, VATAN in Turkish.

I like how the Kurdish guy is pronouncing the words. He seems like a linguist, someone who could really teach you about voices, and the possibility of how many voices could a person pronounce. He really pronounces good and slow the words, that I could almost learn them. 😁😀
