Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
Tell her to make me a cambric shirt
(On the side of a hill in the deep forest green)
Parsely, sage, rosemary & thyme
(Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground)
Without no seams nor needlework
(Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
(Sleeps unaware of the clarion call)
Tell her to find me an acre of land
(On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves)
Parsely, sage, rosemary, & thyme
(Washed is the ground with so many tears)
Between the salt water and the sea strand
(A soldier cleans and polishes a gun)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather
(War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions)
Parsely, sage, rosemary & thyme
(Generals order their soldiers to kill)
And to gather it all in a bunch of heather
(And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten)
Then she'll be a true love of mine
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine.

So much nostalgia in this, the Medieval Fair long since past but not forgotten, the 60's anti-war movement that was nostalgic for a non-existent utopian past, the nostalgia of the author's lost love, and the memories of those old enough to remember this duet from a long gone childhood.

+IgnatzKolisch Actually there are two English 'folk songs' here. Only one of which is Scarborough Fair. I think Simon's art is combining them and using ancient sounding instrumentation to come up with an incredible arrangement that spoke to the time of the war in Viet Nam and iindeed the time of eternal war,

Yes, it’s true that this song is centuries older than Simon & Garfunkel. My brother really liked this song. He liked it so much that he called our local radio station when we were kids and asked the DJ to play it, and when the DJ wanted to know who my brother wanted to dedicate it to, my brother said my name just so they’d play it. This reminds me of him when I hear it.

The lyric seriously made me cry. Through my comprehension (which could be different than people out there), I see a soldier fighting on stranger's land; for what he was fighting for, he couldn't remember it anymore. Wear out physically and mentally, he remember his homeland with plenty of sunshine, specialties, and the girl he loved. Not knowing when he will die on this stranger's land miles and miles away from home, he wished someone would remember that he was from a place which has plenty of sunshine, specialties, and a girl he loved. I could be wrong; but from my point of view, this lyric really made my lacrimal gland sweat.

JarlofVestfold Actually, the above interpretation isn't so far off. Note that this song isn't just "Scarborough Fair" but also "Canticle"--two songs put together. And "Canticle" is about war: listen to the lyrics "generals order their soldiers to kill, and to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten." "Scarborough Fair" is about love and impossibility, which symbolically also aligns with the story of a distant soldier.
@northumbrianhighlander5528
@northumbrianhighlander5528 9 жыл бұрын
The song is about the Yorkshire town of Scarborough and i've been there many a times since i like not far from it. But the song relates to a man whom tells us his former love give him impossible tasks to perform. However there is also hypothesis is could be about The Great Plague of the Middle Ages, but the song itself is common with a Scottish Ballad The Elfin Knight. Where an elf threatens to abduct young women to be his lover unless the perform impossible tasks. The melody is more 19th century which talks of a traditional English fair, other versions of the song go "Sober and grave grows merry in time", "Every rose grows merry in time" and "There's never a rose grows fairer with time." The song has no relation to war since as we all know Scarborough has not been in a war with anyone nor can it be since tis just a town. Folks have changed the song since the original hence all this war bollocks.
@norrysponse1799
@norrysponse1799 9 жыл бұрын
JarlofVestfold , are you being intentionally obtuse? This arrangement is a blending of two different songs, (1) Scarborough Fair, and (2) Canticle. The Scarborough Fair part is what you describe, an adaptation of a traditional folk song. The Canticle part is about pointless and brutal battle marring a pastoral setting and is an adaptation of Simon's earlier anti-war song "The Side of a Hill" which appeared in the album The Paul Simon Songbook. The lyrics and melodies are merged, but they are different songs with different topics. Here are the lyrics of each, unentangled, and for you reference also The Side of a Hill: *Scarborough Fair* Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme Remember me to one who lives there She once was a true love of mine Tell her to make me a cambric shirt Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme Without no seams nor needlework Then she'll be a true love of mine Tell her to find me an acre of land Parsley, sage, rosemary, & thyme Between the salt water and the sea strand Then she'll be a true love of mine Tell her to reap it in a sickle of leather Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme And to gather it all in a bunch of heather Then she'll be a true love of mine Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme Remember me to one who lives there She once was a true love of mine. *Canticle* On the side of a hill in the deep forest green Tracing a sparrow on snow-crested ground Blankets and bedclothes a child of the mountains Sleeps unaware of the clarion call On the side of a hill, a sprinkling of leaves Washed is the ground with so many tears A soldier cleans and polishes a gun War bellows, blazing in scarlet battalions Generals order their soldiers to kill And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten *The Side of a Hill* On the side of a hill, in a land called Somewhere A little boy lies asleep in the earth While down in the valley, a cruel war rages And people forget what a child's life is worthOn the side of a hill, a little cloud weeps And waters the grave with its silent tears While a soldier cleans and polishes a gun That ended a life at the age of seven yearsAnd the war rages on in land called Somewhere And generals order their men to kill And to fight for a cause they've long ago forgotten While a little cloud weeps on the side of a hill

Simon and Garfunkel mastered a lost art in the world of music. They told stories that transcend music; we can all listen to this song and close our eyes and open our minds to times when we were true individuals. Music should talk to our primal beings.

These guys had such an intriguing way of writing really dynamic music that was both dark and beautiful at the same time. Often imitated but never duplicated. That's the one thing I can say about these guys' output. They really need to give their fans one last taste of their talent, whether it be live or an album, before mortality catches up with them. The fact of the matter is I never got into them exclusively, but God do I appreciate them for these brilliant songs they've made.

i used to work in a concrete factory back in the early 70's, one o my co workers was a vet (dave rankin if anyone knows the name) we went on a camping holiday around cornwall (this is the UK) in his VW microbus, and the one tape i recall having was 6 and 12 string guitar by leo kottke. that's all, a summer of carrying concrete about and eating chocolate biscuits by the solent river in southampton.

How vividly this song paints a picture inside a Vietnam era soldier's mind. Not only his thoughts of home, but chronologically his thoughts after entering the war, polishing guns to how we will be blazing in, to the blunt louder realization "they have sent us to kill" and then echoing thoughts from the massive anti-war movement developing at home "a cause they have forgotten". We are afforded a glimpse into the internal conflict that the soldiers faced, in addition to have been swept from the life we know and placed into battle.

I was in San Francisco when I first heard this song, and it has stuck in my mind since then. Truly one of the greatest songs ever--a perfect of mystical romanctic & anti-Vietnam war feelings. That's part of what it means to be an art work.

"Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasuka? Isogashii Desu Ka? Sukutte-moratte Ii Desu Ka?" brought me here. Initially some descriptions from anime sites stating it's a tragedy anime, then the song being used as an insert during the episode caught my attention. "Tragedy" and "Scarborough Fair", and then all those death flags planted all over the very first episode. Oh yeah, time to prepare my tissues. This is going to be worthy of a 12-episode trip.

I am 66 and just woke up with this song in my head for no good reason and I had to come here and listen to its haunting beauty again.Funny how not a big fan of S&G or the song when i was a teen - it was always move and find another song as I heard it coming on my car radio-ugh not again-too slow I would think. Yet today something drew me back in time and I seek its calming beauty in this insane loud world of . Maybe my wife who passed away 2 years ago trying to calm me down- who knows why things pop up in our minds? What a great song it truly is.

I'm 60 and love them. I'm so sorry about your wife. Music Therapy at its' finest! Been playing this song in piano class lol. I went from looking for Taj Farrant video singing Tenn. Whiskey, to Joan Biaz Diamonds and Rust, and after a few brutal raw tears (Just worked 4 -12s so tired) and ended up here with my music brain and ADD/ADHD haha. Am learning guitar and finishing a bachelor's in psych so an atypical hippie. Man, what a nice stroll down memory lane! Gonna read Steven Tyler's DOES THE NOISE IN MY HEAD ANNOY YOU SOON. lol. Received it for a Mother's Day gift as requested. Blessings and prayers and may Jesus and the universal language of music help you through your journey!
