People are overlooking the main point of this fuss about Luke Shaw - if your whole tournament hopes rest on the fitness of a bang average left back who has hardly had a full season of football over the past ten years, shows everything wrong with Southgate and the England team. I’m a United fan but it was criminally insane to me that Shaw was even being considered for this tournament at all. In 9 years at United, he’s only managed to play in 51% of our games. He’s spent over half of this last season out injured, yet Southgate was prepared to take him even without a run of games under his belt. Aside from injuries, he’s a solid left back but by no means good enough to be the ONLY option for a position (without having to shoe-horn another player in there). Laughable that he’s the only left-footed defender in the squad, at all - which again England and Southgate could have been smarter with. It infuriates me that some United fans still have him in an ideal XI moving forward. And it looks like Southgate and co are banking on him being available. Absolutely not reliable in the slightest. Great on his day, but going about things ‘hoping’ it will be a great day is a massive reason why England have won nothing. Other big nations would have replaced Shaw or at least have ideal candidates waiting.

like many have said to just take one left sided defender who is injured. And we all know there are other players he will never give game time. The young midfielder from Palace is one I would be shocked if Southgate gave any game time to in the remaining match or two if we are lucky enough to make the quarter finals. It’s a miracle he found a bit of a spine to play Gordon for 5 minutes in the last match. It’s also a safe bet that Ivan Toney won’t get a full 90minutes before England exit the tournament.

We were led to believe that Shaw was selected because he had a good chance of playing some minutes in the group stages of the tournament.This is clearly not the case and for it to be suggested that he is available to play some part in the knock outs is ludicrous. Shaw is obviously unfit to play after 4 months out and should be sent home to get fit for Man utd next season. Southgate has some serious questions to answer after the euros has finished about his squad selection,particually down the left hand side.

Over the last tournaments Shaw has been very important in Englands attacking on the left and seeing how poor we are on that side without him I can understand why Southgate decided to take a chance on including him and he would have taken advice from his medical team about his fitness. If they said there was a 75% chance he would be fit it was a risk worth taking.
