@@chrisdonnelly7401 literally everyone in the world would have done the exact same thing in his position. Its not illegal, hes paid more tax to the uk than anyone else currently alive no doubt. Hes right to ask for the public pot of money to contribute. if that pot of money dosnt go towards a new old trafford, it will instead be spent on some random london railway development - something the north will not receive any benefit for. people like yourself dont understand how budgets work. the pot of money will always be there to be spent. Jim wants it to be spent in the north for a change, which you cant knock - unless of course you are southern (like Simon is) and want the whole of the UK to pay for london all the time.....

Cost of living crisis is still ongoing for many. Giving taxpayer money to a football club to build a stadium is not the right move. Not surprised that a billionaire isn't reading the room.
@samwize28

it isnt giving Utd money that would otherwise be used on something sensible though. its giving Utd money that would otherwise be spend on developing a London railway network - i.e. something the northern tax payer would reap absolutely zero benefit from. What Jim is presenting is perfectly logical, but football fans are too tribal to see the sense.

Pretty sure Manchester council paid man city 35m towards their development.. and UTD are not asking for money for the stadium, they are asking for the development of the local surrounding areas which will be accessible to the public , 500;000 new homes and shops so of course the council would be involved, because it will be used by Manchester residents not just Utd fans etc

Simon Jordan doesn't mention here that the man City stadium took 110 million of government funds to build . Or what about West ham playing from the London stadium and the conversion into a football stadium was at taxpayers' expense . Lots of sports projects are government funded and I see how he doesn't mention the millions and millions in tax or revenue created for Manchester and the government by being the attraction united are . Fans come from all over the world just to see them play . It's a disgrace the half truths that get told on this channel

Newton Heath: The Birthplace of the Theatre of Dreams Jim Radcliffe should consider constructing a new stadium, while transforming the venerable Old Trafford into a beacon of history. This iconic stadium could serve a multifaceted purpose: a museum celebrating Manchester United's rich heritage, a training ground complementing Carrington, and a dedicated arena for the women's team, symbolizing progress and respect for the sport's female athletes. Incorporating a tribute to the Munich disaster within this historical context would honor the legacy of those who have shaped the club. Furthermore, the railway line adjacent to Old Trafford presents an opportunity to forge a physical and symbolic link to Newton Heath, underscoring the area's pivotal role in the club's origins. As Jim Radcliffe hails from Failsworth, he is undoubtedly aware of Newton Heath's significance in the annals of Manchester United, known as the cradle of the Theatre of Dreams. This connection is not merely historical but a living testament to the unwavering loyalty of the fans, whose support remains steadfast regardless of the team's standings.

They should go ahead with it, use tax payers money to build it but then make sure United don't own the stadium and sign an agreement to say that can't build another one for 100 years, then make United have to pay a premium to use it, have to pay for all maintenance even when they are not using it, have a percentage of revenue (for all matches and events) going towards helping fund the NHS and various local charities So United don't have to pay to build a stadium, but instead the government will use the United name and commercial success to generate money to benefit the UK for decades to come. Probably a ridiculous idea in so many ways but we might as well find a way to make money off such a massive club if we can and give back to the community like they say they want to do.

While I truly understand the history of Old Trafford is important, if the best choice is to build a new stadium, nostalgia shouldn't get in the way. Football clubs have to evolve or they go down. I don't hear any Arsenal fan complaining they're not playing at highbury anymore. Having said that, I'd prefer a solution that keeps Man Utd playing on that iconic ground. Depends on the return of investment. If a new stadium breaths new life into impoverished areas and creates employment, extra tourism who'll spend money in the city of Manchester,I don't mind that tax money will be used because the money will flow back to people. But I can imagine it will create a precedent for other clubs to start knocking on the goverments door. Tax money is often used on projects that are not important to me personally, but that's democracy and I'm ok with that.

I live in Hull and all the prime housing developments are massively funded out of 'Levelling-Up money'. Basically, already wealthy property developers who are mainly from other cities are being paid 50% of their costs to build flats all over the city centre. We all thought the levelling-up fund was to improve transport and infrastructure to start bringing us up to par with the wealthy south. Silly us. It is obvious that the amount of Grant-Aid doled out is more than enough to pay for each development without any cash used by the developer yet on paper they are supposed to pay half. With some dubious accounting skills they are getting prime properties for nothing! There is surely massive corruption at play and I guess the Man Utd mob are sniffing at the same trough.

OT should be downsized and used as youth stadium/museum - The north needs a major event venue for CL finals/Internationals/NFL/Exhibitions. The closest northern major stadium currently is... Old trafford! - if the pot of money Jim is asking for isnt spent towards new old trafford, it would only get spent on yet another development in london somewhere that 99% of the north would never even know about yet alone use.
