In a way, the likes of Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard are victims of their own status. Status that means they get top jobs much more quickly than normal managers, but it means they don't have the experience and skillset to be successful in those positions once they are in them. It's all very well saying they should earn their stripes and work their way up, but nobody, in any walk of life, is going to go through the hassle of working their way up multiple steps of a ladder when they can get a high paid, glamorous job straight away. It's like saying an actor should snub a role in a top Hollywood movie and work their way up through local theatre productions first.

Good pundit and knowing the game doesn't make you a manager who knows how to manage a game tactically, how to inspire. I heard that they played a 442 and they have NEVER played that system. Another of the England stars of days gone who thought he could go straight into high level management without an extended period as an assistant learning how to coach from a skilled mentor. As a Villa fan, glad to see Souness recognising that Barry Bannon ran the show - I watched the extended highlights (not the full game). Bannon is a very tidy footballer, with an excellent footballing brain and talented feet. His passing and vision can be Cowans-esque at times. A joy to watch. O'Neill never gave him a real chance at Villa. At 34yo he is in the autumn of his career. He will be a jewel for Wednesday this season. Best of luck Barry (and Wednesday).
