In a way, the likes of Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard are victims of their own status. Status that means they get top jobs much more quickly than normal managers, but it means they don't have the experience and skillset to be successful in those positions once they are in them. It's all very well saying they should earn their stripes and work their way up, but nobody, in any walk of life, is going to go through the hassle of working their way up multiple steps of a ladder when they can get a high paid, glamorous job straight away. It's like saying an actor should snub a role in a top Hollywood movie and work their way up through local theatre productions first.

As for Rooney, One of my favourite players to wear a MU shirt, I hope things turn around for him soon, In my opinion i think he should have worked under someone like Arteta did under Pep, Under someone who's evolving to the modern game in where it seems to be heading now. Good pundit and knowing the game doesn't make you a manager who knows how to manage a game tactically, how to inspire. I heard that they played a 442 and they have NEVER played that system. He should have concentrated on making his team hard to beat, defence first. With Birmingham he told his players to play out from the back from the get go. They had never played like that before and he took a winning Birmingham side and turned them into a losing side.

Rooney is clueless, has a terrible track record and will prove to be a dumb appointment by Plymouth. At least come Xmas he will be able to enjoy an extended holiday period with his family. Another of the England stars of days gone who thought he could go straight into high level management without an extended period as an assistant learning how to coach from a skilled mentor. As a Villa fan, glad to see Souness recognising that Barry Bannon ran the show - I watched the extended highlights (not the full game). Bannon is a very tidy footballer, with an excellent footballing brain and talented feet. His passing and vision can be Cowans-esque at times. A joy to watch. O'Neill never gave him a real chance at Villa. At 34yo he is in the autumn of his career. He will be a jewel for Wednesday this season. Best of luck Barry (and Wednesday).

The only good thing about Rooney as a rubbish manager it keeps him away from the Sky punditry circuit. Insufferable to listen to. God love the Plymouth players.

you are being very harsh to Wayne after one game. This is pathetic . Talk about hammering someone before hes had a chance. Shame on Talk Sport . This needs to stop.

Wayne just needs to keep playing attacking football, get Plymouth relegated, then he can land the Dortmund job.

If the big defeat in his first match was predictable, so is Simon's reaction.

He’s never going to be a football manager and he needs to go asap before Argyle are in the depths of relegation and the fool who employed him needs to resign.

Rooney cannot be given any credit for his managerial career as its been a disaster! At work, whatever role you do, your performance is judged by your ability to meet the requirements and achieve your objectives. It's exactly the same whether you drive a bus or manage a football team - there is no difference! To date 2 relegation, 1 let go by DC..........if anyone wants to give him credit for that them they need a check up from the neck up! Come on Graham, you were one of footballs hard men, in mgmt your passion was unquestionable.........

I really don't understand this argument. Are you only allowed opinions if you are success? Just because you failed as an owner doesn't automatically mean everything you say is wrong or bullshit. He is there to give his opinion on things, and he is pretty knowledgeable even if his time at Crystal Palace wasnt the greatest.

Failed NO he just didn’t wanna pump Millions into a club that was struggling.Hed already lost 100 Million and to lose it you have to have it in the first place
