@@morbidmanmusic Thoroughly reading or skiming over something are two different things too. I said that I think that Simon Phillips is ONE OF the best drummers in the world, I didnt say he was THE BEST drummer in the world. When it comes to drummers, or a player of any other instrument for that matter, I dont think any player is the absolute hands down best, nor should they be. There are so many different styles and approaches to any instrument that no one person could ever be the absolute best, so we have the ONE OF THE BEST catagory, and Im thankful we have many to choose from.

Everbody's got their opinion and point of view. We can agree to disagree. It's pretty safe to say that Simon Phillips is a better drummer than most if us...put together. And...this is SIMON'S solo. He can play what he wants. He can choose to be dynamic, or he can choose to be undynamic. He can play fast or slow. It's all up to him. It's his commentary in his life in that moment. Choose to dig it, or not. It's all good. Great footage, Jason. Saw Steve Gadd at Jazz Alley right before the pandemic hit.

One thing that Simon knows about good drum solos is that it has to appeal to everyone, particularly those who are not technically inclined. This concept was originally quoted by none other than the great Gene Krupa. Drummers can rock the place with all of the fancy arms/legs polyrhythms and fast drum exchanges, but everyone from kids up to grandpa and grandma better understand a solo that builds with textures and rhythms that make them want to dance in their seats. I would also like to mention that Simon is an absolute and incredible gentleman. And as a soloist he is right up there with Gadd, Weckl, and Colaiuta in my book.

Was amazing to be there that night. I was in the balcony. I love that Simon didn't steal the night with solos. He only took one moment to solo. The horn, guitarist and keys just ripped every tune that night with brilliance. Myself, I'm not really into solos unless they are in the music. Everyone has their taste on that but for me if it's not with the band it's not worth it. All in all, it was an amazing night.

Wow, someone that’s always been great has obviously been shedding even more. Super impressed as always, and yes those three snares are so tasty together. The entire kit sounds amazing, he’s soo great at playing those wide open drums and that big gnarly setup. Go Simon, and I miss you with Toto, however Sput has been the best fit since you and of course jeff. Thanks always for your constant inspiration within yourself and that gift your given to us all.

He uses his match stick drumming style to the greatest advantage. He has said that he taught himself to play both left handed and right handed so as not to limit himself to a kind of neurological bias in his drumming.

I like Simon as an ensemble player and he's got a great catalogue of recordings. That said, most of this solo sounds like he's practicing rudiments; boring and uncreative. No variation of dynamics, everything played with same intensity/volume. His technique overall would improve if he lowered his cymbals and toms. He finally opens up his can of whoop ass toward the end in the ostinato section and outro. All things considered, still a legend worth seeing. Band sounds great!
@Lorisou2 жыл бұрын
Ses toms sont vraiment au minimum à cause des grosses caisses de 24. Et ses cymbales sont hautes pour des raisons de repisse des micros en enregistrement en studio 😊
