It's so amazing how animals that never evolved to groom each other love being groomed nonetheless and form relationships from it. I bet being warm blooded also makes us cozy partners to snuggle up with, especially for such a temperature sensitive creature.

Reptiles have emotions, they just don't have the part of the brain that feels things like love. But what they do have IS capable of feeling pleasure, preference, familiarity, etc. They feel things differently (and more primitively) but they're there.

From my own experience as a breeder of reptiles, I really agree with you. And each one has different personality too. When you raise them from juveniles, some of them turn to be really tame and friendly. Yes, they don't have the part of the brain that feels love, but they can feel happiness when they see the feeder ( owner ) that I'm positive.

I don't know if you will read this, but i have observed and yes, they do indeed love attention. For when mine gets scared, he runs to me and hides in between my feet, when i go out, he waits by the glass of his enclosure and scratches, waiting for me to get home, even if i walk past the enclosure he gets up and scratches. My little shit also sleeps on my shoulder, and can't fall asleep without my smell, it has gotten to the point where he sleeps on the floor next to the bed in a dog bed. My little shit also loves head rubs and has fallen asleep on multiple occasions. Not only that but he allows my to stick my fingers in his mouth, i am able to have his mouth wide open and he will not bite. He is also intelligent, as you would already know, but has gotten to the point where the little shit has learned the area and knows how to get home. I have tried to take him on a walk outside the house and he after 2 walks learned the placement of the house, now which ever side of the road i take him on or to any side at all. He walks back and scratches at the front door. Lastly i let him walk around the house sometimes and if i do not pay him enough attention he walks into my room and tries to climb my leg. Yes, he is that needy. Also as i think you would know he is potty trained which is a very nice situation to be in. But yeah, just thought i would let you know. Anyways keep up the amazing work!

i suspect that when raised in captivity there are many larger reptiles species that may have intelligence equal to or greater than a dog, maybe on par with a cat. perhaps when they know they don't have to worry about survival, they allow their actual intelligence to be displayed

@kostyac6411
@kostyac6411 6 жыл бұрын
Christian Livigni and Marty Ostuni then how do you explain bird intelligence? The brains of birds are almost as simple as a reptiles, yet crows rival primates in intelligences. I don't think a mammals brain is necessarily more developed than a birds or a reptiles brain, since reptiles, birds, fish and mammals have merely developed each their type brain structure. Lizards are fucking smart, but they're also very shy and cautious creatures that are not social, they easily react to things we don't even realize we do so it's hard to have a lizard display its full potential. This channel is one of the few places where you can see that :) see and believe, and stfu. Reptiles can show affection. Crocodile mothers caring for their young is clearly affection by any reasonable definition.
@ZackTheKack
@ZackTheKack 5 жыл бұрын
@@kostyac6411 stop. You had me until you said that neonatal care was affection. That's not even why humans take care of children. All animals that care for their offspring do so because of instinct. It comes from the desire of continuing genetic lines and ensuring the survival of the species. That's why when there's a baby crying women react to it. Or why some animals will foster other's babies. Do reptiles have emotions? Yes. But they have them on a different level than other species with more advanced brain structures. Pleasure, fear, stress, trust, surprise, disgust, and others are all emotions I've seen reptiles display, but they're considered basic emotions. They don't necessarily feel love, compassion, awe/amazement, grief, and similar complex emotions, at least not in a way that we would recognize.

I'm very curious as to whether any of these reptiles can be selectively bred so they are amenable to interaction with humans the same way wolves (canis lupus) were selectively bred in the past to become our doggies (canis familiaris). We see a huge difference between wolves and dogs in terms of temperament and I even know of a Russian scientist who selectively bred foxes to become friendlier with humans. Could this be done with some species and genuses from the reptilia class to produce purely domesticated reptiles??

+Jason Red Problem is small lizards like Pagona vitticepts have been observed having emotions. I think mine actually waits for me to remove him from his enclosure to take a crap too... Which requires fore-thought. My lizard also likes to be handled and refuses to go back into his cage, gripping hard at times, which is communication for I want to be with my owner. Lizards are smart, and pagona vitticepts is just smart enough to cause trouble (as often mine has more guts than brains). I have observed my lizard is unaware of a missing appendage, as he tries to scratch his face with a nub..... As far as trust and memory, lizards seem to have excellent memories and can hold grudges, and my relationship with my lizard is completely built on trust.....

It has been documented that Tegus have emotions, I would argue most larger reptiles particularly lizards have some form of emotions; they can be content or malcontent, often represented by color changes depending on the species of the lizard (think chameleons). My pagona vitticepts likes to check if I am still there while exploring my room for the millionth time. I could argue, he is just checking to ensure I am not hunting him, but then I would have to explain why he runs up to me, or does not show fear or aggression when I approach. We can prove lizards have emotions through the use of working MRI as well......... MOST EXPERTS SAY NEVER TO PEEL SKIN OFF A LIZARD WHILE IT IS SHEDDING.... Wonderful Pet you have there!

comes down to what you want to call emotions it's easy for people to generalise and say 'well mammals have more emotions because of brain structure' and leave it at that while ignoring how there's many complex mammals that respond far less to interaction than many reptiles.

Most people arguing that reptiles lack emotions and 'run on instinct' tend to be the dumbest people around. Ive seen plenty of different lizards love them some attention, swifts, geckos, monitors, iguanas, even snakes like it. Probably because of religious fundamentalism demonizing reptiles and 'serpents'.

Marcus Bullock My dad had an iguana that craved attention. When you didn’t give the iguana enough attention and you didn’t play with him he’d get visibly angry. He’d whip you with his tail. Emotions aren’t scientific; they are a human thing. We made them up. To say other animals “feel” the same way we do is foolish. We have no idea how they feel. I believe many animals “feel” something, but their brains interpret the feelings differently.

They have all the same lower and rudimentary brain parts as us, so they do feel emotions for sure. However, the do not feel complex emotions and can't really be said to 'think' very much. I am sure they have formed a mental picture of you and can recognise and remember you, but whether or not they have an emotional attachment to you is debatable. You obviously have an emotional attachment to them and that's all that really matters.

Not saying your a bad reptile owner because of it but I’m just surprised that you allow even the possibility of an accident to happened knowing how big of a stickler you are on safety. Just was woundering. Excellent training on your part to get him to this point!

Have you ever brought in a "Pet Psychic" or as some prefer to be called "Animal Communicators"? I'd love to see what is on the minds of your beautiful lizards.

The water monitors are so amazingly beautiful. One of my fav’s. I would love to raise one from infancy but being a New York State’r we cannot have monitors, domesticated or not. Grrr! Sucks

That is silly escaped captive monitors would not survive there and become an invasive species as the winter is way to cold for survival! So why the dumb law?
