Hi Kevin It was so interesting watching that monitor. He was so alert to all the sounds, and he was very intelligent. You can see that he is thinking about what is going on around him. I am glad you to talked about not having a live feeding. Cindy

As someone who loves both monitors and rodents, I'm glad you're also against live feeding. There is a reason for the phrase 'fight like a cornered rat' and I've seen far too many pet snakes and lizards hurt by what was supposed to be their dinner, all because some sick owner got a thrill out of seeing something small and furry die.

Reptiles eat live in nature because often that's the only way they're able to get food that isn't carrion. In a domestic setting where they're being fed by an owner, that isn't the case at all as we have other ways of getting fresh healthy food for our pets. There is no reason for live feeding, and it is 100% avoidable. Live feeding isn't enrichment or stimulation, it's just a way for some sicko to get a thrill.

What an extraordinarily beautiful animal. I can't wait until I get my first reptile and hopefully at some point in my life when I'm experienced enough, a monitor lizard (preferably a water monitor, I've fallen in love with them since watching your videos).

So intelligent looking they are and so aware of their surroundings and the noises, my snakes are exactly the same, especially when l have them outside, they soon settle down though and start to enjoy the sunshine. Educating is so important and getting more and more people to respect them is so important and l only hope that more will.

It's kind of funny watching them try to walk on the Slick floors with those big claws. It's kind of like them swimming. It's so funny to watch. Can you imagine those claws coming at you that we're not attached to a friendly adorable Croc monitor?? Holy fudge THOSE CLAWS ARE FREAKING HORRIFYING!! (whose talking so loud? Damn!!🤓

So cute! I've been binge watching your monitor videos. Such inquisitive and badass animals. I'd love to have one one day if I ever have adoquate space. The way they look at you and investigate things remind me of a shy, yet food motivated lab. Are they somewhat venemous like a komodo dragon?

Hello, I love watching your videos as i house reptiles myself and find them sooo helpful. I watched the videos on trust building and was wondering if you ever have owned a chameleon? I got a jacksons and im having trouble building trust with him, unlike my others. Thanks in advance!

I have had plenty of chameleons and generally they are often easily threatened and then just freak out...... so you have to ge3t them used to just seeing you in the room. If they are gaping their mouth and all that while handling then they are losing it so i would not force them to get on your hand but get them so they dont puff up or tweak out when you are near them...baby steps!

I appreciate the reply! He doesn't gape his mouth at all but he moves away from my hand if i have it in the cage. Ive just been standing there with my hand out for periods of time to see if he gets used to it. Thanks for the help

had a buddy that fed his 6 Croc Monitors by hand. had a heated/cooled greenhouse he kept them in, the "enclosures" were not very secure, two males got out and went at each other and they were ripping each other apart, he went in the middle of them with a huge staff, one grabbed his arm 180 stitches and 7 Staples later he slimmed his collection down to a single male and a single female. Croc Monitors have one of the worst bites I've ever seen.

What about feeding live insects to ackie monitors? Do you think it is better to kill them before feeding? (Do dubia roaches bite?) Sorry for the stupid question, but i don't want to make any mistakes when preparing everything for my future pet.

Feeding them live feeds the wild animal instinct provoking them to kill to survive. That is not something you want in a pet. I love watching your videos and seeing the intelligence of these monitors. They do have problem solving abilities. I have wanted a pet monitor for many years unfortunately I don't have the room to keep a water monitor as I think they should have alot of space to roam and survey.

I don't know anything about monitors or any lizards really, just been watching quite a few vids of them live feeding lately. I always notice how really long tails Croc monitors have, what's the reason for them having such a long tail? And also keep hearing how crocs have bigger, sharper teeth, why such bad teeth?? I seen a vid of a guy's hand that was bitten and it looked horrendous, I'd be scared shitless of getting bitten after seeing what they can do if they get pissed off.
@mattgosling2657
@mattgosling2657 4 жыл бұрын
@Jason Berryman Yeah mate the guy said he only got bitten because he was stopping a fight and it was more of a warning bite, even though it looked horrendous it didn't keep hold of him so it made me think how much damage it could have done if it had wanted to hurt him. I been getting interested in lizards lately and I read another comment like yours saying they live in trees, eat a lot of birds and need to kill their food quickly so is probably a reason why they have such big, sharp teeth. Like you say also I've seen a few Croc monitors that people have been feeding and stuff and they do seem quite laid back and tame, having said that it would only take one mistake for someone to need serious hospital treatment.

@Jason Berryman what does the word arboreal mean mate?
@mattgosling2657
@mattgosling2657 4 жыл бұрын
@Jason Berryman Yeah right makes sense, thanks for replying. Also I noticed how really long a crocodile monitor's tail is do you know if they can use their tails to hang on to branches or is it mostly to help with balance? If they live high up in the trees they definitely need good balance. I think they are even bigger than komodo dragons length wise I mean, not by overall size and weight. How big do they roughly grow, would this one be close to full size? They have a distinct shaped head to other monitors, after perentis I think they're the nicest looking monitors.

@Jason Berryman I've been looking for somewhere that gives a good look at their teeth because vids of them eating like this never show a clear look and after seeing that guys bite I'm curious to see how big their teeth are.

If you're not prepared to feed monitors, live prey, then you shouldn't be keeping them. It's as simple as that, these are not domesticated animals.
