This tutorial should be mandatory for every new photographer. I wish I had this years ago when I was first starting out. Simon, you are an incredible teacher. You have the ability to break things down to where the concepts are completely understandable. Plus, you give us the visual examples as well. I can't thank you enough. The next time someone comes to me with questions, I'll be sharing this tutorial. After all these years, I'm still learning something new. Thank you!

The best or in the top 2 presentations I've ever seen. Very clear, concise points made without a lot of extra chatter. Get's straight to the point and he shares visual images that goes along with the information he'd just noted. For instance, if he is talking about shutter speed, he will post an image showing an actual scale or what it looks like. This is a great point of reference and makes it easy to find on the camera.

You having grown up in the film world, the usefulness of ISO in digital eluded me for over 20 years. And this video made it click for me, albeit somewhat passively. I never considered the usefulness of setting my preferred DOF and blur (shutter speed) and adjusting exposure via ISO. This seems like a great tool for street work in particular. Esp. along with Zone focusing.

Great video. Useful info even for those of us with some experience. For instance, I didn't know that changing the shooting mode might also change which button or dial affected a setting. I assumed those were static unless customizing the controls. One thing I would add, though, is about the picture style when shooting JPEG. If my understanding is correct, that picture style affects how you see it on the back of the camera, even if you're shooting RAW. So someone shooting RAW may want to set the style to neutral, or whatever setting least alters the photo, if they're wanting the most accurate representation of the image they've captured, so that they can tweak their settings if desired. I know this is recommended for night sky photography, since it's very low light.

My thoughts on RAW are simple: shoot RAW+JPG. If you're happy with the JPG, you can just delete the RAW later. But, if for some reason you like the composition but not the edit, you have the RAW to go back to. Also, in a couple years time, you might want to fiddle with the RAW. If you take pictures, save both, the RAW editing power is huge and can make a dull boring foto really pop out! My opinion and my personal practice.

If you are e.g. on vacation and want to do something with a picture without any processing, it is much easier in JPG. I started with that (on a EOS350D) but switched to just JPG because it was too slow for some motives. Now I only switch to both formats if I expect the picture to be problematic with contrast and such or if I want to do something special with it.

Bear with me for contradicting. Shouldn't the caption read as "understand...." and not "Learn..."? Despite understanding these concepts decades ago, I am still learning many of them. One could learn only through experiences. The only way one could gain experience in photography is by keep trying out all available combinations of settings. Thank you once again for the numerous highly enlightening videos. They have certainly enhanced my understanding and made me a better photographer.
