@@derekmcmanus1423 for me it isn't much of an issue atm. The water in the province I live in is fairly clean, as long as it's running. I was thinking about the one that Joe robinet and Doug outside use, but I like the idea of Inline filter part of this one...

Evening Captain. Nice review, but, in my opinion they still have the inherent problem of the original, which I have one of, namely you have to submerge the clean area in dirty water. I just don’t like it as a concept! However, you have a lovely dog, so it’s all good.

Haha - and she don’t need no filter! The seal seems pretty good, but there is always the chance - that’s why I prefer to drink from the stream of water rather than touch the mouthpiece. Keeping a length of clean tubing separate from the filter to drink from might be an option. Thanks mate and a very merry Christmas!

I have the Lifesaver 4000uf purchased prior to iconlifesaver. One time camping I had filtered from a lake covered with pollen. The pollen went right through so I stopped using it for the rest of the trip. Back at home I had discovered there was a recall. I kept going back to the website for updates and when it was taken over by Iconlifesaver and reissued, I purchased the replacement cartridge. What like about it is how easy it is to pump. You don't end up hurting your palms or wrist like you do with MSR or other ceramic type filters. Other popular camping filters don't filter out viruses. Ceramic filters get clogged after a few bottles pumped. Lifesaver is expensive but the ease of use and that it filters out viruses makes it worth it. IconLifesaver does have Black Friday and Christmas sales. So it's worth the wait.

Thanks George! Amazing that pollen was getting through the matrix - good job you noticed! I’ve got a First Need XL and the Lifesaver is certainly easier to pump than that - plus not back-flushing!! Cheers and happy Christmas! 🎄

Evening Simon, I’m impressed by this filter system mate, been looking around at different types and there is huge disparity amongst what’s out there. Usually in this situation where it’s a matter of serious health issues, a big gob of cash will solve most problems but I must say, with water filtration, money doesn’t seem to solve all the problems. It appears some rather pricey systems have their flaws. This tool looks like a really sensible effort by a manufacturer to enable even the least technically minded a means of obtaining a clean source of water. Your appraisal looks sound and the information delivered was concise. Thanks for a really helpful upload. I was floundering around with this issue but I feel like I’ve found a lot of answers. Cheers mate, have a good Christmas. 👍🏻👍🏻

Cheers Nick! Agreed, there are so many systems out there and it’s not necessarily the most expensive ones that are really good (take Sawyer for example!). I used to work for a company that serviced sewage systems for properties that were remote from the main sewage systems and believe me.. When they broke or sludged up ... Where did they overflow?? Straight into the nearest stream... even the treated water went straight into the nearest river or stream... I would not use one of those things unless it was a mountain stream and even then I would check that there was no properties upstream or dead sheep etc...

Hi Simon and thank you for the review. I have an observation about the 'filter life' fail-safe that you mentioned.... If the cartridge just stops working at the filter limit, surely that means that it can stop working exactly when you might need it?! I would've thought that some form of indication as it was *approaching* it's limit would have been more useful than simply stopping working? Perhaps something to pass on to them? Keep up the good work.
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 5 жыл бұрын
Cheers. Yes, it may well, but surely that is preferable to consuming potentially harmful water? You can always fall back on the good old fashioned boiling method. I think that if you suspect you are getting towards the filters end of life, you’d be wise to get another cartridge in anticipation of that happening, certainly before you are in a situation when you really need to rely on it! - a trip etc. I’m pretty sure Lifesaver would like to hear your thoughts on it, they are a consumer led company when it comes to research and development. Atb, Simon

Hi, this is an important point. As the filter nears the end of its effective lifetime, the user will notice the flow rate begin to drop. This is a visual cue to replace the filter cartridge. Thanks

Of course the Newfie has to get in the water...every time. Hi, sweet Maggie! I wonder how putting a flushable filter, like a Sawyer Micro/Mini, inline between the remote sediment filter and the main body would effect the longevity of the main components? I think using a similar setup when you are expecting really poor water quality on the trail/canoe trip would help. Then, use just one or the other for basic trips where cleaner water abounds. 🤔

That sir, is a bloody good idea! The Sawyer filters are so cheap, it would definitely be a worthwhile thing to do - I guess it would slow down the flow rate, but the Liberty is really fast anyway! 👍

Great review, Simon. In your opinion, how does this compare with the Sawyer mini? On paper, they do pretty much the same thing, filtrate water, but the Liberty Lifesaver is a lot bulkier. Not to mention its price tag. Btw, as with all your videos, very well edited 🙏🏼
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’ve not used a Sawyer filter, so I can’t compare directly. Each have their merits (price tag and size being Sawyers!) the Liberty has the upper hand though in my opinion, being much more versatile - self contained water bottle, no mending around with hoses (unless you choose to!) no need for back-washing etc. Hope that helps, Simon. Happy Christmas!

Hi Outsider Productions, the main difference is our ability to remove virus. We are officially a water purifier, not just a filter, as we can remove all known waterborne microbiological contaminants. Sawyer Mini will only remove cysts and some bacteria. Thanks

Hello Simon. It’s the Steelfixer here with the Old Town Pack that I haven’t been out in yet. Slowly gathering all the equipment. I changed my profile name to something almost as ridiculous as the last 😂 I only found out about this product yesterday and have looked at reviews of the Jerry can as well. I see the company is Colchester area, not too far from me, sort of wondering if they do wholesale on an amount of units so I might sell some to reduce the cost. What I would love to find is someone who can manufacture a very good useable camping distiller that can be used over a camp fire and isn’t too big with also a carbon filter in it. Just that I have a lot of faith in distilled water. Trying to find anything that seems any good and fit for purpose in a survival or just general camping use is not easy. Perhaps I need to invent one? Maybe this lifesaver company could invent one? I hope they comment on my points. All the best. Oh by the way I forgot the brand you told me of the buoyancy aid you told me you use when canoeing? I lost all my safari pages thanks to mobile phone company. I hope soon I can make videos as good as yours. Hope you see my comment. Thanks again Simon

Thanks mate! Hopefully all this madness will pass quickly and we can all get back out on the water! Great idea about the distiller - might be onto an earner there is nobody else is making them! My buoyancy aid is a Nookie Ranger. 👍 Stay safe and keep well.

Simon, a bloke in the woods Thanks very much Simon you are a star. Suitable camping distiller needs to be invented I think it’s more in line with Bushcraft survival than all these way expensive filter bottles, I think they are great but just way too overpriced I think someone is going a bit overboard on the profit margins and I don’t like going overboard, when I finally get out in my canoe going overboard is one thing I would like to avoid, the water is cold and I am not the greatest swimmer, if I were a fish I would be a flounder 😁

Good review and looks/sounds a decent product but against the sawyer mini it seems rather expensive and bulky. Not sure about leaving water in any filter for a length of time as surely that is a recipe for the breeding of a few bugs? Being a bit naive in these matters I will have to check that one out. Merry Christmas to you and all your family from a bloke currently freezing in Bulgaria!
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 5 жыл бұрын
Cheers Trev - it certainly is bulkier and a lot more expensive than the Sawyer! It does have its merits though and features that Sawyer filters haven’t. Self contained, no back flushing necessary, fail safe, more versatile. As for the water left in, it’s purely to stop the filter drying out - the water remains on the ‘dirty’ side of the matrix and will be dealt with when it’s pumped through the filter - any bacteria that is in there will be filtered just as it would if it were dirty water. You can always tip it out and re-scoop next time you use it. Cheers and happy Christmas, Simon

Outrageously over-priced, bloody enormous *and* too small capacity, too heavy! 2,000 litres for £90, + £50 per 2,000 litres after that. Hell, you can get a Katadyn for that money. I also don't like the fact that they don't reveal anywhere on their website what the filter size is. Sawyer Mini

Not a fan then? Haha. It is priced high, that’s for sure. I’m not comparing it to the Sawyer filters, as you say, hard to beat them in terms of cost etc! But it is a good filter, and has its own merits - I’ve not got a Sawyer (or Katadyn) filter, but I do use a First Need XLE, which costs a lot more and this holds its own against that for sure. 4 1/2p per litre is acceptable for worry free clean water in my book. Cheers buddy, Simon

I certainly wouldn't want to rely on something that may decide to stop working after only a few hundred litres, just because the water you were trying to clean was _too dirty._ Size, capacity, and price, are secondary concerns, compared to that major failing. IMO. Each to their own, I suppose.Happy Christmas to you and yours, Simon. Thanks for the great videos, and sharing your travels with this grumpy old sod. ;o)

Good points you make. I'll check out filters in your post too. I just tended to buy bottles of 1ltr (4) to carry between my son and I. Definitely need a water filter for my next adventure.

@Cheryl. Just buy a sawyer. The Katadyn is no better, and it's five times the price.

Hi, our hollow fibre membranes are approximately 15 nanometers (0.015 micron), which means our products are purifiers not just water filters like the Sawyer and Katadyns you mention. At 4p per litre, we feel our offering is economical compared to buying bottled water whilst camping or travelling. Thanks

No chemicals?

Most of these filters do not. I don't know exactly how this filter works but generally they have a maze type system to collect particles and then the charcoal removes chemicals.

No chemical or powered element to this filter - it works by forcing water through a tight matrix (simulating porous rock - natures filter!), contaminants are trapped inside this matrix as the particles are too large to pass through the tiny pore size. A carbon filter then deals with chemical, pesticide and herbicide contaminants and removes bad taste and smells.

@@simonablokeinthewoods Simon this filter does not remove chemicals,pesticides and herbicides and I hate the way lifesaver say you can filter water from ANY source when you can’t safely.the charcoal filter only removes taste and odour,I have tried to contact lifesaver on multiple occasions to try and get a deeper understanding of the level of filtration that carbon filter provides but they just reply with the same response no matter how I ask the questions.

Hi Simon - ace video. Which filter do you prefer - this one or the one you used on your canoe trip with Kent Survival? First Need XL filter kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGOlo2OFgr6asKM

Thanks Angela! I really like them both, the First Need filter is a beast and has a really fast flow rate - ideal for group use or long trips etc, but bulky. For solo trips and days out in the canoe though, the Liberty bottle - it’s all self contained and being the size it is, fits into a side pocket easily, when you need water, just ‘scoop and go!’ Cheers,Simon.
