Aww poor Maggie. Although she looked at you with pure devotion and I can tell that you gave her a good life. I am slowly digging backwards you see. When you bond with an animal, you learn ways of communicating that isn't easy but, you create a special bond. that is all we can do for our animals. miss her as I am sure you do. she was a character in the videos.

Simon, enjoyed your video. Just a thought for you. I was sationed in Germany with the U.S. Army when we changed from "C" rations to MREs. We would heat water like you did and heat the pouches in that water. Then use the hot water for coffee, we Yanks don't drink much tea, and it was a way to conserve water. We did this for quite a while before the Army informed us that wasn't a good idea. Seems the boiling water leached some rather harmful chemicals out of the plastic pouches. Didn't kill me but I thought you should know. I think the plastic used for the pouches has been changed since, I certainly hope so. You might want to check on your rations. It was during that time in my Army career that I also perfected the one canteen cup shave, shower, and shampoo. Order is important here. Be well.
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 6 жыл бұрын
Cheers William - don’t want shaving bristles in yer hair haha! That is a very good point about the MREs and one raised by a viewer before. I don’t know if they ever changed the packaging, would seam odd not to - why waste that precious water when you’re probably going to make tea or coffee to go with your meal anyway!! I’ve always done it that way and so far so good - no ill effects (yet!!! Hahaha) I should probably investigate further! Cheers, Simon.

Hey Simon I enjoyed that, next time if your in that situation put a few of those logs on top of that stove to dry out when waiting for your water to boil

Thanks! That’s a good idea, they dried out pretty well next to it, but on top would have been quicker. Atb, Simon.

Very nice, thanks for sharing. Always interesting to see what sort of kit other campers use or create. The ammo can stove was interesting. Hot chocolate, for some reason the civilian stuff (that I've found) never came up to the level of the hot chocolate in the old "C" rations. One of the biggest treats was a ration that included a can of "John Wayne" cookies and a packet of hot chocolate. Ahhh, life in the field is good. And camping with your dog, hard to beat that.

Bacon grill, oatmeal blocks and hot chocolate were always a favourite in the older style Brit ration packs. 😋

I guess the thing with the British Army ration packs are that if it could be possibly the "last meal" you could be eating out during combat it better make you feel damn happy. Great stuff mate, happy camping!

I just found your camping videos and im really enjoying watching them and catching up , my dad used to take me camping when i was a kid in the channel islands and i used to love it but as an adult i found camping to be a bit too basic for me but i also tried house living which really didnt work which is i think why iv ended up living in a narrowboat because its close to nature but i still have the luxuries of home ie best of both worlds , and i cant wait to see what new videos you come up with in the future 😊😊😊

It’s late November, just before Thanksgiving in the US, now, 2024. Five years later than your video, no one will care to read my long winded comments. Glad you finally got some cold weather, albeit wet snow, to camp in the lavu and use your nice wood stove. I’m an old vet and have consumed many types of field rations. It’s a comfort to know that they have just enough of all you need, and not always difficult to eat. Oh, yesterday, I watched a YT video about 10 fast street foods of the UK, really looked delicious. Your kit and camera work are quite the chore. Thank you for your planning, preparation and dedicated work. Maggie has been gone a while, now. Tom has grown up and probably doesn’t want to carry your heavy kit anymore. Your pescatarian wife probably knows you come to the woods, once in a while, for a good, fleshy meal…heh, heh… I hope you and yours are well…from a friend, retired in the US foothills of the Smoky Mountains.

Bought my daughter that same tent when she was six, they cost next to nothing then (before they were all over youtube). Removed the buttons and sewed it up with zip in one side. Even at 5'8 i find it a tad small so your side wall mod looks like a must-do. She's now 11 and we have had some good nights in it even in winter without a fire. In summer is where it really is best, the thick canvas keeps you from being woken from early dawn light. I can't see CO being a problem with a flue. I've spent many nights in a Lavvu (top smoke vent) with open fires inside. Thanks for the great videos.

Yes, they are great shelters/tents. Mine is the largest of the three sizes (3 grommet holes) and with the side wall is really spacious. Not tried it with an open fire, but the wood burner works really well. Cheers, Simon

The open fires were with a much larger Helsport Lavvu designed for open fires. Even they can get smokey under foggy weather. Wouldnt dream of them with anything smaller.

Great video mate! Love Maggie, she's beautiful! The beast from the east.. The media.. Lol.. Australia saw the "Arctic Blast" back in July 2015.. The most snow in 30 to 50 years for allot of places though Australia. Including Stanthorpe, I was 100km from there at the time.. It was the talk of the region! There was a rush on warm clothes and blankets, heaters.. All sorts. It's keeping warm while camping through winter, is one the greatest challenges faced. Australia's no exception. An edit:- a year later, the "Antarctic Blast".. Lol

Hahaha - got to love the media! Hard to imagine an arctic blast in Australia! Then again, I remember pulling on layer after layer when I crossed over the blue mountains in NSW and thinking to myself ‘this isn’t what I was expecting, where’s the red dusty outback?’ Little did I know I’d have days of it ahead across the Nullabor! Wishing for a cooling breeze! Glad you enjoyed the video mate, Atb, Simon.

Keeping active, hydrated and with plentiful hot food is a big part of maintaining as much comfort in body and mind as possible when camping outdoors in inclement weather. Impressed that such a small stove produced so much heat, albeit with a large stockpile of prepared wood. Well done.
