New Years Day 2020, what a year!
In this video, I am back on the water in my homemade cedar strip canoe with my good buddy Ginge. We set off from Wayford Bridge and paddle south on the river Ant with supplies for a slap up lunch and a pile of dogs. Eventually, the River opens up into the impressive and stunning Barton Broad, the second largest of the Norfolk Broads and a wide and open expanse of water forming a haven for birds and other wildlife.
We find a quiet spot to stop amongst the trees and Ginge sets about rustling up bacon and sausage butties and tea cooked over charcoal. A delicious and well earned lunch - thanks Ginge!
After lunch we head back upstream, completing our paddle as the last glimpses of light fade - just in the nick of time.
I thoroughly enjoy being out on the water on New Years Day - there is just something about the tranquility, the sounds and the motion of the boat - perfect conditions to reflect on the past year and look forward to the exciting year ahead.
Thanks you all for your support over the past year and thank you for joining me today, out on the beautiful Norfolk Broads.
Happy New Year!

@@Mr.S65 I always look for the silver lining. 2020 was definitely darker than expected. But it gave Mother Nature a needed rest, gave families more time together, gave people a reason to find new ways of doing things (work remote, grocery delivery, etc), helped parents realize how important the role of schools is in our society functioning, etc. Sometimes, getting brighter means first pondering the dark & getting your bearings.

I'm already wanting to get out to kayak, but have to wait until April or possibly the end of March if I'm lucky. It's already been a couple weeks since I've gone put walking in the woods. Very much appreciate the fascinating factoid that Admiral Nelson learned to sail on Barton Broad. From the Norfolk Broads School of Sailing: "For decades, people young and old have learned to sail on these sheltered waters. Olympic yachtsman has earned their stripes in the many competitive sailing events, and sailing enthusiasts return year after year to enjoy this wonderful cruising ground. Even Admiral Horatio Nelson was taught to sail here as a boy, on Barton Broad, before joining the Royal Navy and going to sea at the age of 12."

Hello Simon, lovely vid of an area i know well, we have a boat based at Brundall, and the Ant is my favourite river, especially above How Hill. That mill cottage is called Hunsett Mill, it was totally ruined when they built the pig ugly extension to the back and side, it was a real picture postcard cottage before they ruined it. I guessed you were going when you said about the secret staithe. Our boat is 43ft long, and in you vid, it looks like we may get in there to moor, though we may have to reverse in, and stern moor so we can get out ok without having to turn round in the staithe area. So thanks for posting this, it was particularly informative. I know you did the Waveney Navigation up to and beyond Geldeston Lock, and i believe you`ve done the Bure Valley Navigation above Coltishall Lock, but have you done the continuance of the Yare after if turns away from Norwich at Wensum Mouth?. I always love to see the upper non navigable stretches, especially where the huge wherries used to sail to.

Only 35 cms shoulder height and ? 6 g 7 kg, he was trained to run alongside the bicycle and rested in a klixfix attached soft basket with a an elements attachment to protect him from rain and a flexible baby carriage umbrella on hot days. He loved it. You'd need an E-Bike and a trailer with your dog. We love doing what you do, so don't be amazed. There's just one thing, though....no more showing off that bacon. Lovely paddling area - I was hoping to hear "Norfolk Rhapsody" in the sound track. Simon"s Floating Cafe' - no vegetables were harmed during the making of this video.

Nice one Simon. I was desolate to see so many Cormarants...they average 7lbs of fish per day, decimating the rivers and broads. I also find it incredibly sad to see wherry hulks....but we are lucky to have one or two still about. Have a good, peaceful and happy 2020

Thanks Jeremy. That hulk was apparently a motor cruiser, abandoned there in the 1960s - slowly being reclaimed by nature. 👍

Hi Simon. Really good video and lovely countryside. Why do people leave their boats to rot away like that? Anyway lunch looked delicious. Anyway Happy New Year and wishing you every success and good health. Regards Luke

Thank you! Apparently that rotting hull is all that remains of a motor cruiser that moored up at that spot in about 1960. The owners never returned for it and it has been there, slowly being absorbed by nature ever since.

Happy New Year Si, I'm guessing that Ging must be from Kernow. I was born in Penrice and grew up in Grampound. I now live in Wiltshire which is lovely but I long to return home, unfortunately life gets in the way and the Career prospects for Engineers is slim these days now our China Clay industry and Tin Mining have long since past.

Very nice video with your best friend. Adorable as ever. I think she’s forgiven you. And your human friend, Ging, also with his best buddies, looked like it was a great day and a delicious lunch. Well deserved Simon with your new and growing subscribers. I’d say Maggie may have helped a little too. Here’s to many, many more. Looking forward to this years videos whatever you do they will be interesting. Thank you for your hard work. It is appreciated. Til the next one. ATB

Going passed the farm cottages and Windmill at Chapel Fields, Stalham, reminded me that is where my mother-in-law grew up - one of seven children. I used to canoe and fish between Wayford Bridge and Honing on the Ant. Found an old mortar once wading across the river at Wayford Bridge. The memories of wayward kids eh!

You start the new year off with a wonderful video and my favorite you tube dog Maggie! I like the other two dogs your friend gringe has with him. Lunch looked superb but butter and mustard I don’t know about that one. A Happy New Year indeed.
