Time to focus on the garden beds as spring is just around the corner. I love the hugelkultur garden bed as it takes minimal time to build and 0 dollars.

The hugelbeds are really attractive and thanks for illustrating how you create them! And i like the chickens, too.

Thanks. Unfortunately they did not work very well with the soil we have so I am converting them to Raised Garden beds using the Hugelkultur method.

@@simonhahnel8092 Hugelkultur beds never do very well the first year. The wood absorbs most of the moisture and nitrogen. The second year is better, and things really start to take off the third year. You can speed up the cycle a bit by burying high nitrogen food scraps in with the wood, and by watering the bed in the first year. That way, there will be surplus nitrogen and water that the wood can soak up, and you can basically never water it again if you get decent rainfall and have a bit of passive runoff water catchment.

Now you have 4 more followers! It looked like they couldn’t wait to look for worms when you dug up the grass. Nice work, turned out to be an excellent planting bed. Thank you

Yep, I am now out numbered 10 to 1. 4 Chickens, 2 dogs, 1 cat, 2 daughters and 1 wife. All love watching me work. 🤣. I do feel a bit wrong giving the worms to the chickens as the gardens would love to have them do good work for the soil. The chickens however really like worms and I am still getting them familiar with the garden so at this stage the worms are fair game.

Gracias. Estamos en el valle de Yarra en Victoria, Australia. Solo me mantengo ocupado durante el covid lock. Ahora los días se vuelven más largos y no hace tanto frío que puedo pasar más tiempo en el jardín.

Also a question: Your fence is really nice with the wood and metal mesh. Did you basically just use wooden posts and attach the mesh to them? The reason i am wondering is because my property has older chain link fencing that needs to be redone. I thought perhaps i could use similar posts and reuse the chain link.
@simonhahnel80923 жыл бұрын
The mesh is attached to a top and bottom wire. Those wires are strained tight to keep the mesh taught. The Rabbit proof wiring runs off the bottom strainer wire. I have some videos that show the fence build as well.

I will leave this one for a bit as it is in the shade of the Chicken coop in the winter sun. I have planted out the other 3 with mostly nitrogen producing plants so they will be ready for spring.
@121homestead92 жыл бұрын
Have you noticed any difference between using green wood vs mature dead wood in your hugel mounds. I’ve had issue with green wood due to the breakdown of the wood stealing the nitrogen from the plants?
@simonhahnel80922 жыл бұрын
I have had no luck at all with my Hugel mounds. Rats moved in and made them their home. Now removing all the timber and replacing wit just soil.

Its going to be interesting to see if there's any difference in growth in these types of gardens compared to a normal garden. in 5 years time I did this to my bath tub gardens that you can see in my videos
@simonhahnel80924 жыл бұрын
I believe a hugelkultur garden bed only lasts about 4-5 years and then you remake it. I will check out your vids as I want some other styles of beds as well.
@Bernie51724 жыл бұрын
@@simonhahnel8092 what I did was put some twigs and leaves on the bottom of the tubs than a solid log on top of them, then some cow dung and a bucket of charcoal, then some dirt and some garden mulch from bunnings.

I pity being you at the moment Simon, not being able to go into Bunnings only for click and collect, WHAT, that's just not on haha. I'd go nuts if that happened up here. Great job on the garden mate, well done looking very good indeed. Seeya Rob.......................hope the new lockdown restrictions don't stuff you and your family too much, hang in there mate !!
@simonhahnel80924 жыл бұрын
Thankfully we can all easily work from home and are not too impacted, unlike some poor sods out there. Made some emergency runs to Bunnings on the weekend. Was almost a given we were going to the next lock down level. Luckily the main build is complete. Was going to start an outdoor kitchen but no hurry on that one.

Hola .no capto mucho tu idea .
@simonhahnel80924 жыл бұрын
