This Minecraft kelp and fuel farm is simple and efficient. It allows you to quickly and easily get a lot of dried kelp. Dried kelp can be used as food or used to create dried kelp blocks. For those of you who had this running and then it stopped... you replace the sand and the kelp and it works again, but at some point the kelp won't grow... you need to break out the 2 sand blocks in front of the sticky pistons in the front and then remove the sand blocks that fell under the sticky piston (the block 1 lower and 1 forward from the sticky piston). Then replace the sand in the front attached to the sticky pistons and any sand blocks you had to break in the process to get to the jammed up sand. A tip, if you are building this above ground level you can cut out the 2 blocks in the spot where that sand accumulates and it will fall through so you won't have to keep breaking things open to repair the machine. Awesome video and it works great.

I don't know if you will ever see this, but I made a slight improvement to this farm. If you replace the on/off switch with a comparator runing from one of the kelp collection hoppers, when the system runs out of fuel and starts backing up into the hoppers the system will automatically shut off

instead of putting signs for a correct water flow, you can also put a piece of ladder at each side for a correct waterflow, plus, youre able to get out of the kelp chamber in case you were falling into it

For those of you struggling with this here’s a suggestion. If your sand keeps falling make sure you aren’t on the borders of the chunk to check that simply go to each corner of the machine and write the coordinates down. If your any of your x or z coordinates are divisible by 16 you are on the border of a chunk, meaning your machine will not work.

Tested on Bedrock 1.20.2 on 11/30/23, this does still work! I tried it in creative mode and it worked, so I built it on my realm. Sand kept breaking, and I realized I built it on a chunk border. Moved it up a few blocks and now it works 90% of the time. I noticed one time after relogging that the sand broke. But we'll see how it fares. This farm is too fast for 4 smokers, so I added a comparator coming out of the hopper closest to the lever. Put exactly 4 pieces of redstone dust connected to a repeater going into the lever block. Now, when the chest fills and the hopper has a stack of kelp, the machine will shut off! It will momentarily kick in every few seconds to top it off.

This was always my favorite farm. It was the first redstone farm I ever built and the first of ur tutorials I followed and successfully built. Then it broke from one of the updates and I was heartbroken. I tried following someone else's tutorial for a zero tick kelp farm once a new design was thought up, but it was way more temperamental than it was worth. Literally would spit out the buckets u were using, and even sometimes made the buckets flat out disappear while running it. And that's if u manage to build it right and manage to get it in 1 chunk. It was compact but would break if u put the bucket in the wrong dispenser, and the dispenser that worked changed constantly! It was insanity driving. But this? This gorgeous farm. Then fact that it works again brings me so so much joy. I built it 3 times just now, changing a couple of things for experimenting, and each of them worked perfectly. This farm is one I still remember by heart it turns out. And now that I can build it again, well, that's my next survival project. Tho I may need to make a villager breeder and iron farm before I get to that cuz i'm on a very limited iron supply atm. Extremely annoying. The 3rd version of the farm I built in my kelp farm spree was, what i'd like to call, industrial grade. Minecart hoppers to collect from all the smokers. Minecart chest to deliver fuel to the smokers too close to the under-side of the farm to fill by hand, and 78 hoppers total for all the collecting. It takes all of the redstone signal that the clock can output making 12 spots for kelp to grow and be harvested. It's definitely too industrial for me to build in my current survival world cuz of the lack of iron farm. But the industrial beauty using ur design just proves how tile-able ur farm is. I think if I wanted to, i could add another half to this on the back to get even more! Not that it's necessary. I literally got way too much kelp in my creative world from running it for like 15-25 minutes with just the 1 half. I'm considering putting the full materials list for the industrial version here, as a reward for anyone who read my entire comment. But idk if that's an ok thing to do since it is just his design, tiled. If someone responds asking for the materials list, i'll put it in the reply to this comment. A couple FIXES for a couple different problems To find chunk borders, you can use a small map. The small maps are 8x8 chunk, and a chunk is 16x16 blocks. If the kelp won't grow if you build it in the right place, the top pistons are probably too fast. To fix, make a slower redstone clock for just the top pistons. It'll likely produce kelp slower, but at least it works

I dunno why but if the farm isn't facing a certain direction it doesn't work, the sand will break. After messing with it for a bit for me it started working when I faced the farm North [ the front of the farm is where the chests are ]. To know where North is you'll have to use a Locator Map [ A map combined with a compass ], the top of the map I believe is always North and you'll have to turn until your arrow points to the top of the map. If that doesn't work for anyone else experiencing what I did I don't know any other solutions I'm sorry.

The farm sometimes stops growing kelp the solution is when the sand gets pulled back to fall as sometimes it gets stuck you can place torches under them that the sand will fall on and break to remove clogs

damn that’s definitely better than what i have right know. I built the Goldfarm of yours and instead of wasting the goldswords in the lava, i conected furnaces to melt them. to fuel those i built a tried kelp farm where you need bone meal to grow the plants. for the bone meal i connected a bone meal farm with kelp to it. pretty complicated setup, but due to this i can just put this next to my gold farm and hopefully be more efficient

I managed to make that redstone torch tower at 5:19 much more compact. You want to place the first redstone torch with a block above it, but then you can place a single observer above and observing the leftmost redstone dust (just up and to the right of the last block you placed. This will trigger the row of dust above just like the redstone torch tower did, but with fewer blocks. The timings all still work just fine. Just remember, you still need the first redstone torch and block to "short" the redstone signal. Without that, the farm won't work.

A bit of advice, when you start a build video, mark out the dimensions of the farm so people know the end dimensions to effectively place it in their world. i.e. this fits in a 10 wide by 10 deep by 6 high space or whatever the space is. Also, dont wait till the last 3 seconds of the video to tell them it needs to be chunk aligned for best results and if they didn't then they have to rebuild the farm. I also wanted to say you can make it a bit longer to get faster production rates so you don't have to AFK as long. Instead of 2 slots long I made a 6 long version on Xbox and it works fine and still fits comfortably in a chunk. The lag is a factor when increasing the size so don't use it while playing with friends or if you plan on doing anything. I have 4 slots making bonemeal and 2 slots making dried kelp.

I built this farm from JC Playz and it works awesome. What I did was I made it 3 wide on the Kelp section and in Total I had 16 Total furnaces to dry the kelp as it was a ton coming in. I had to expand the intake chest to spread out and separate the kelp over the total furnaces. I was awesome to have this much come in so I could fuel my other farms at the same time.

When making a tutorial on this you should mention that it would not work on Bedrock realm. Because it does not. I have tried it out many times. Works on single player bedrock, but not on realm bedrock.

it's a massive struggle getting these zero tick kelp farms to work but after some research i had found you can make them work within bedrock in the most recent release, the farm should be within the centre of a chunk and you arent able to leave the world or the chunk loading area cause it breaks the machine and you'll have to move the sand and kelp back into place to find a chunk border you want to have your coords be divisible by 16 all but the y coord then quickly map out the area and have the machine placed within the chunk, it should then work almost perfectly most of the time this is my experience with a single kelp farm not a double and i am off to test the limits of the farm, how long i can make it before it stops working

The best upgrade to this build would be to add an infinite lava source built into the side of this building, which is what I did in my world. You can do this with putting lava in a solid, lava-proof block enclosure with dripstone beneath the solid block dripping into a cauldron. This way, you do not have to waste any of your dried kelp to fuel this.

There’s no point in building this if you make an automatic lava farm because you could use that as fuel instead, and if you want bonemeal then you don’t need to smelt, you just feed the kelp into a composter

Pro tip: add an extra layer of hoppers between the top chests and the smokers facing outwards into a composter. This will act as an overflow and will turn everything thats too much into bonemeal. If you want the farm to only produce bone meal you can block the hoppers above the smokers with items that dont go into the smoker. For free fuel you can add a lava farm (with drip stones and cauldrons) so you can use lava buckets for your farm. might come in handy if you run out of dried kelp blocks to fuel the farm

This farm keeps breaking for me in Bedrock 1.19. Sometimes I come out and the sand is gone. Then after that is fixed, it will work again…but then the kelp is there but isn’t being harvested. Any suggestions for long term maintenance? Thanks!

This just happened to me. It worked and then I forgot to turn it off before running back to my house. Came back and the sand plus kelp was gone. I replaced the sand and kelp but now the kelp won’t grow when the machine is turned on.

I used a similar farm in terms of redstone for the sugarcane farm but the water keeps separating due to the piston and the kelp cannot grow. I'm in 1.19.51, any tips?

What I would recommend is instead of a lever, wire some redstone underground to right next to the chests and place a pressure plate. Do note that when doing this you need the signal to be inverted.

It's been a while since I've seen a kelp farm, I actually just had an ingenious Idea to speed up kelp harvesting. You can make the top chamber a bit taller and give the kelp more room to grow and calibrate it so the piston harvests when it's just about to reach the top and instead of immediately going to 4 Blasts furnaces you can further split it into 4 large chests giving you 8 Blast furnaces without having to use as much redstone to build a second farm. I don't think going to 16 is possible on the surface and you'd need to see under the farm but I'll report back if I can make a viable 16 furnace farm even if that's a bit impractical

use minecarts you can get to 16 smelters easy even to 32 and 64 if you want and have the items just put a super smelter where he put the smokers

I made a 5-block version of the farm, with 2 blocks feeding into compost, and the other 3 feeding 16 smokers. Even with 16 smokers, it still creates kelp about 4 times as fast as the 16 smokers can cook the kelp. I'd have to test, but I'm pretty sure you could efficiently make a 1-block version of the farm for all 16 smokers lol

I upgraded this farm with extra hoppers and chests to create a single-stream fuel network. You still have to craft it but rather than go to all the smokers individually, you can set it up so all the dried kelp comes out into one chest and then you put all the kelp blocks in another. I also put a bonemeal farm next to it. Composters eat up kelp way faster than smokers, so you can put the excess kelp in there.

Could we get an updated guide on breaking bedrock to access the nether roof please? I'm not sure if this is still possible, but the cauldron and powdered snow trick no longer works. I also appreciate that you cannot build on the nether roof in Bedrock edition, but I would like to speed up and simplify travel between my nether portals as much as is possible.

You should dig tunnels at Y120 ish(I believe that's right below the lowest bedrock point) and make iceboat highways. If you have eff 5 and sprint mine you shouldn't fall because the under ceiling has thickness. if you do just have father falling and fire resistance ready.

Since a kelp block needs 9 kelp to be smelted, a kelp block would effectively smelt 11 items as 9 of the 20 would be used to smelt the next kelp block. It's easier to get than coal or charcoal, but it doesn't smelt 2.5 times more. Charcoal can smelt 8 items, but 1 of those items needs to be logs to make the next charcoal for an effective smelt of 7 items.

If you are having trouble placing hoppers. You can use cobblestone to put the hoppers into the after they are facing the way you need you can switch out the cobble with the chest or furnace you need in that spot.

@@coralkitty They do for me if I go too far from the farm, but I can just afk right by it and it works okay. If the sand break immediately, it's likely that the sand you placed on top of the extended piston rods has gone. Replace that, then the sand stuck to the face of the sticky pistons. I've had to do that a couple of times now, if I forget to turn off the redstone before wandering off.

My machine broke after i turned it off, but turning it back on, save quitting and loading back in fixed it, this fix isnt permanent if you turn off the machine again youll have to repeat the fix This can also cause the sticky piston sand to fall Also when it breaks the pistons mess with the water and there're sounds and particle of stone being broken

I removed 2 of the smokers and replaced them with composters as soon as I had enough sustainable fuel. Now it's a bone meal/dried kelp farm 😁

Works great. If youre just starting this out use lava buckets as the first few fuel. Im on ps4, game autosaved, top pistons somehow desynced and were alternating, then the game crashed, then one of the sands magically disappeared, but I got it back up and running. Ez fuel

One question I have, is it possible to combine both the kelp and the bamboo farms together, like the one you make back in 1.16? The video was titled "Automatic 1.16 XP Farm Tutorial". I love that thing as it was essentially 4 farms in one, XP, kelp, dried kelp, and bamboo. If there is a way to churn out a 1.20 version of "big bertha" I think the community would be definitely most appreciative. Thank you for your creations and dedication to updating.

I built this farm and it was working great. Then, I built another one for bonemeal on the next chunk over and now my kelp won't grow in either farm. It also might be a lag issue though.

once the auto crafter comes out, we can craft the kelp automatically into kelp blocks and funel them back to the furnaces for oo fuel
