A way to get your starter going faster is to use organic plain yogurt with live cultures, a pinch of caraway seeds and whole grain flour. After I started mine I was baking beautiful loaves of bread the first week. And I think it’s so satisfying to make your own starter. It’s part of the fun journey!

Using an organic flour or a 5O% whole grain/white will help. I do a 50/50 Qt jar of this and keep it in pantry for feedings.

This is the second video I see to feed as per starter and by exact measurement. I appreciate you missing feedings and not giving up. I have felt like giving up but now I will continue after watching your video… thank u

Simple clear instructions are so helpful for those starting out. It always comes across as intimidating but it’s not hard at all. My first starter took weeks to rise lol in the winter. Great job Veronika!

Thanks Lisa! Yes it’s intimidating and we tend to over think it. So I hope this helps others that are just starting out for sure!!

Rather than a pint jar, i started and maintain my starter in a quart canning jar (which I recently switched to a recycled Mount Olive pickle jar for its wide mouth). One tablespoon water + one tablespoon flour proportions work just as well as three + three. By the end of the fermentation cycle (7 days) you should have enough to take out a cup of starter for your first loaf recipe and enough left over to put in the refrigerator for the next loaf.

I suggest using a large chopstick to stir with. You'll thank me for it. Much easier to stir well and get sides scraped and much easier to wash.

Love the video! I’m on my 11th feed skipped a few as well. Activity seems to be slowly picking back up. I have plenty of room in my jar but should I start discarding? Does that affect the progress?

You can do all purpose or bread flour. I used King Arthur bread flour

I love your video, seems so simple. Can't wait to try. With the discard, can you make a second starter? Also how much of the starter do you use ?
@shakanranch

When do you mean to make a second starter? And why do you need a second starter? You can make one and then divide it once it’s mature if you need to share with someone. When I make my bread I use 100 grams of starter.

I have 5 starters going at the same time to see which one will strive. After watching this video I will keep one and use the rest as discard. I found a wonderful discard waffle recipe!!!

I have a question. My starter more than doubled. I did the float test. 1st teaspoon sunk in water but the 2nd teaspoon picking up more of the bubbles it floated. I’m confused

It’s ok if some sunk if it floats it’s ready to use
