Sometimes those R19 batts for a 2x6 (5.5in) bay are the same weight per square foot as R13 batts intended for a 2x4 (3.5in) bay. This means they have the same amount of fiberglass, with more air. By compressing the 5.5in batt into a 3.5in bay you should end up with R13. Some say you'll get slightly more than R13, but I don't see how. The fiberglass is not doing insulation, it is just trapping the air, or in other words stopping the air from moving around and convecting heat between outside and inside walls. The trapped air provides the insulation. This means that if your 5.5in batt has more fiberglass than a 3.5in batt you will end up with more fiberglass (not insulating) and less air (insulating) and you will get less than R13 insulation value by using the R19 batt.

Thanks alot for the comment. You are right, I also read something similar, compressing a R19 down doesn’t meat is better. The trapped air is really important. Thank you for watching!!!

He did it just how I’m doing it on my 12x32 Dirksen but keep in mind if you have to follow code like me you will need r30 in the ceilings so extended the 2x4 ceiling joist down to atleast 2x6 width will work. I used rough cut lumber 2x6 which gave me Exaclty 6 inches I’m gonna run 3 ft up from top plate and let it sit on top ceiling which I will use 7/16 usb first because it’s 2 ft on center . I picked up 16 sheets 7/16 on marketplace so it’s all Good then come back with Sheetrock Or however I want. I also drilled 3 inch soffit vents in each bay from under those not on side. used the same styrofoam baffles Bought the 3 inch plastic round soffit vent packs which come in 4 from Home Depot. 12 bucks. I also bought a roll of aluminum screen to place inside the plastic round soffit and silicone caulked them in place. I also placed caulk around the outside rim before pushing the 3 inch vent in place They fit tight already so no worries about them falling out. I guess I will see. South Louisiana here and with these hot summers I am just being cautious. My building came with gable vents on both end and ridge vent … I feel Like that’s plenty of air flow I also added 16ft x 32 ft lean to off the other side Ran baffles and have a perforated hardy soffit the length of lean to. Had to by code stick r30 inbeteeen them rough cut 2x6 rafters as well. Didn’t realize that after putting r19 up so had to come back over it with r13 to get to r30. For the price it was still cheaper than spray foam which I hear can cause mold and rot .. my lean to roof is metal with 2 layers of the synthetic felt on top of 5/8 osb. I wish I would have ran some 1x4 across for strapping but it’s on a 1/12 so there won’t be much strain

What did you end up doing to cover your holes that you cut? Do they make a nice grate like soffit vent that can over lay those holes to hide them?
@EverydayShed4 ай бұрын

Ever hear the term, fluff it, don't stuff it? Jamming that insulation into those cavities squeezes out the air pockets and makes the insulation ineffective
@EverydayShed13 күн бұрын
Yes, yes …. But it sooo difficult to get a 24” wide insulation around me.
@NEKingdom24113 күн бұрын
@@EverydayShed It would work better if you peeled 1 1/2-2 inches off from the inside. Without space to trap air insulation doesn't work very well and you have compressed out all the air space.

Doesn’t the front and back screened vent account for the air movement needed to avoid the moisture and mold damage?

Yeah, it's just not as efficient. You can make it better by adding a small exhaust fan

The holes that you drilled for sofit allow air flow. You mentioned that some bugs could get in, is there also danger of water in a heavy rain? Also, instead of the vent along the whole roof, can you not have one vent at the front or back at the top?
@juanrosales27852 ай бұрын
I believe you need an intake (soffit) and output (ridge vent). So the air comes in at a lower point and then as it rises it exists out of the ridge or gable vents.
@EverydayShed2 ай бұрын
Yes! you will need a air to flow from the sides up to the roof.

That's incorrect it's not the recommended method to staple on the inside of the board you need to check the website insulation he bought . That's why they have the tabs on the side to the insulation to unfold and staple on the studs. To better cut use a serrated knife like a bread knife. Razor blades good Dole quickly
