Simple Artistic MDF V-Carved Sign Painting Technique

After learning from past projects, painting a VCarve sign can be challenging, so I decided to experiment with this one created with VCarve Pro and cut with a Techno CNC router.
The entire sign of MDF was first sealed with a water based product applied with a HVLP paint gun. A black base coat was then applied and lightly sanded. For the raised portion, foam brushes on a stick called Spouncers were used to apply craft paint (acrylic) to the raised lettering. A clear compatible sealer should be applied after paint has fully cured to preserve the work (not shown).

Nice Job Guru, I’m in Australia and love your cnc stuff, I run a PDJ 2642 pilot pro machine and do a lot of vcarve sign work, a tip I want to share with you is that when I vcarve text and the color required is black I use water based blackboard paint, almost nil bleeding, super fast drying, easy clean up and with a clear top coat it really pops.

Great job. I use a 3 inch foam roller for the tops, no touch up required if you don't overload the roller. Keep up the good work.

"V" carve Routing through a vinyl mask is simpler. Color the letters area first apply mask and "V" carve then paint background and remove the mask, clear coat over all.

I use a small stiff foam roller to cover the tops of the letters, however I know you were also applying a texture. Great video, thanks for sharing!

I use just regular foam brushes. You can get a variety of sizes from small (thin) to large (thick). Just make sure you have a dab board and you get the majority of paint off so there is no drips. Then lightly drag the brush across the top of the letters. It may require 2-3 coats because your just putting a light coat on each time. But it works like a charm and you can buy the foam brushes in bulk from online stores.

Well done, But way you do not paint the area orange and green then cover it with vinyl. before engrave it. when you finish paint all in black and then remove the vinyl you covered with.the sign will be nice and accurate. Thanks a lot for the nice video.

One idea I had, is using glow-in-the-dark (coloured) paint, and using a black-light generator, the plaque will pop out in the dark.

Hi Steve, I have built the CNC router you call the Giro.I am having a problem with my Z oriantation, after writing the Gcode and set the homing I regegenerate the table in Mach3. It starts Ok but decides to ignore the Z"0" and trys to go deeper, have you come across this before if so I would apreciate your help, thanks for your Videos and any help you can give.

I find using a foam roller much easier than dabbing the paint.

Load up a piece of cardboard or similar and cut out the letters. Then, use the cardboard as a mask so that you can spray paint the letter tops.

I would use different sizes of hard foam paint rollers instead
