Simple Candle Holder made from Scrap Walnut

Over the holidays I made a number of these little candle holders for the family. I originally saw a similar project on Pinterest and enjoyed how simple they were.
The material is a really nice piece of Scrap Walnut that had some surprise figuring in it.
This is a really simple project, that doesn't require too many tools.
Start by measuring your matchbox and cutting a grove big enough to hide the matchbox.
In the video you will see me cutting a groove for the matchbox in the side grain, after having the candle holder for a while that was a mistake, It should have been done in the end grain to prevent the wood from warping and crushing the matches.
Next drill a 1.5" hole the depth of a tea light.
Sand until you're tired of sanding, and then apply the finish.
I typically use Tunge oil for everything that does not need to be food-safe but you can use your favorite finish.

Please don't wear gloves when using a table saw or even a drill press. If your gloves got snagged in the table saw blade, your woodworking days might be over. Be safe, nice work though.

Thanks! If you do end up making one, don't make the notch in the side grain. Humidity will warp it and squish the matches.

I usually work up to about 300 or 400, if you end up making one make the notch for the matches in the end grain instead.

How long are the sides of the cube and stuff like that?

The bit is 40mm. The wood ended up being 52 x 75 x 48mm The notch for the matches is 15mm from the bottom and then however large it needs to be to fit the matches snugly. Doing this again I would have made the cuts in the end grain and not with the grain. As the humidity changes, the wood warped a bit and the matches don't always come out.

sorry mate but, take the god damn gloves off then working with machinery. I've seen what happens and you will lose those fingers you're trying to protect if they catch on something.

Lol, I don't like to wear gloves all the time but these are nice and thin. I find that when it's cold out ( like in this video probably in the negative C ) my hands slip move when pushing material through tools and that seems dangerous!

Not a chance. Unless you're gonna properly sand the inside mitre cuts and candle holder, you'd be lucky to get any money for it at Dollarama

Good thing I don't sell them. And if you had a flat grind blade it would work just fine.
