Hooray, Part 2!!! More work on shop organization but now with more indexing jigs, custom bins and "bin-serts". There is a lot to cover in this video so stick around until the end to see it all.

This is like the Harbor Freight version of Alexandre Chappel. I mean this with all respect. Keep up the great content and videos.

Very impressed with this design. I have wanted this in-shop, and on-the-go versatility for a while. I hope I can find some of those organisers within Australia. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I believe that the Stanley system while more expensive is fairly readily available in other countries.

This came up in my feed. I had a tooling storage problem: taps, counterbores, mills, countersinks, reamers, yadda-yadda. Looked at a number of solutions, few of which appealed to me, and bought a Durham 9-drawer 12x12x24 tooling box. Each drawer can be divided into as many as 12 bins, or less. This thing swallowed everything I have including about 40 taper shank drills (MT1 and MT2 for the most part). Still have an empty drawer and some space in others. Remarkably efficient. Enjoyed both videos.

Great ideas! On bin number 1, you could store 5x more disks if you stood them on edge. Not sure if your drawer is deep enough, but it's a thought.

I 100% agree with you. My first drawer is only about 4.5 inches deep, and I wanted to be able to carry them with me in a storage case but...I haven't done that this far so maybe I should move those to a different drawer. Good suggestion, thanks for watching!

I like the drawer inserts and the multilevel inserts you've got. Pete Rondeau also made some custom inserts that you might find helpful.

I was worried in part 1 about the precision drilling needed for this project, but the jig looks like it will make it a lot simpler. I hope my little monoprice printer can make it.

This is really cool! I liked Alex Chappell's version, but didn't want to spend forever with the printing, and I have a whole stack of the HF organizers, so I may give this a try. The Dewalt Deep Storage organizers use a similar system (different dimensions, tho), and Home Depot usually has them on sale for about $10 after Black Friday, if you're looking for something bigger (or more robust). I made a couple of my own bin-serts for the Dewalt bins; I found that it helps to have a small lip around the inside if you're putting something heavy-ish (relative to the size) in it to get a place to grab it. Trivia: The name for the taper you mention (around minute 14) is "draft angle", it's usually going to be between about 1.5 degrees and 3 degrees for injection-molded parts (the angle is so that you don't get suction between the part and the two mold halves when they get separated, because the part is still warm enough to be pretty soft at that point), and 2.3 degrees is probably a function of "well, we'll make the bottom this size, and we'll make the top that size, and that'll give us an acceptable draft angle" where the bottom dimensions, the top dimensions (or both) optimize the number of parts they can mold in a single shot. ("Draft angle" also pops up when making forms for casting metal in sand, and for pretty much the same reason.)

That is exactly why I decided on this. AC's system is probably better but...I don't know how he found the time to print so many bins. Also, thanks for the trivia.

Nicely done. Always liked Alexandre Chappel's design. For the inserts in the tool chest, would it be faster but just as effective to use slightly thicker wood, and then cut dados on the table saw for the feet to fit into? I would think especially for batching them out like that, it would go faster. That or clamp them all together and then drill them on the drill press all at once.

I really really like that idea with the dados. I had planned to do a part 3 update on this...I may try that. Thanks for watching and the great suggestion.

OK. obviously if you 3D print you won't have this problem but what are you doing with the host cases that you are not using? I'm thinking dismantle for parts if the 2-3 cases you do use get damaged. If you do that, there will be a bunch of cases taking up otherwise valuable space for a maybe.

This will prove to be very useful in my shop. Any tips for setting the parameters to create the bin-serts and internal trays? I'm immediately putting this to use. Thank you!

If you are using the auto bin generator, my workflow was to just make a solid the same size and then use a combine(subtract) operation to get the shape of the inside, scaled to 98 or 99, sliced it with a work plane and then made the upper half a shell and the bottom an open ring. Hopefully that helped...

how do I use the auto bin generator? Fusion 360?
@80garage7
@80garage7 Жыл бұрын
Correct. At the Thingiverse link there is a .f3d file that has some driven parameters. You can choose how many units wide and how many units deep you would like it. Then the bin should update and you can generate the STL.
