This bike came straight off the garage hook with squishy tires, tons of dust, and a rubbing brake! OMG! I can't ride it like this!!!! Well, never fear! All you need is a screwdriver and a tiny bit of knowhow and you'll be ready to roll in 20 minutes!!

because of you i bought a rarely used 1993 s Bianchi Pholcus ATB with a shimano biopace and a Exage LG 300 group, 21 . New Michelin tyres. The bike of my youth, i never had. Bought in from the first owner, a Lady as old as me , who still had the bill and payed 1200 Deutsche Mark for it ( a mothly income back then ) I bought it for 39 Euros. ( 40 bucks) Thats the price of 1 tyre. Now i am a happy bikesaver , also :-)

You convinced me. Today I bought a 2016 diamondback insight and got it in rideable condition and went out for three hours with my son. All I need to do to finish customizing it for myself is get a shorter stem and change out the group set for something with a lower gearing (my area has a lot of steep hills) Forgot how fun wrenching on bikes is.

Enjoying the content and liberal use of Tri-flow and Dawn Power wash. Recently sold my COVID purchased Mountain Bike thinking I would reclaim the glory days on my youth in the 90s. All I got was a boat anchor weight and a stiff neck from riding that guy on the streets of my hood and town. Purchased a Cannondale Quick 5 from a local shop on a deep discount as it was vandalized(scratched up) while sitting outside of the shop. Unfortunately, all the good used golden era Comfort bike are going for $300-$400 here. Anyway - shocked at the lack of decent components on my bike and other at the store - all I got was a Microshift M26 2x7 and some promax brakes - wow this entry point of hybrids has been ravaged. My 90s LBS Schwinn Moad came all Shimano Alivio which was a decent starting point. Not sure where to go next with this project - maybe just ride until something breaks.

That was a great little tidbit of advice on manually bending the v-brake tensioner springs. If you've not shown in a previous video, it would be great to discuss how to properly stack all those little asymmetric brake pad washers (flat on one side, convex or concave on the other) that are used to mount the pads to the v-brake arms and align the pads to the rim. I always seem to struggle with those little buggers and can never seem to properly position new pads.

I'm quite experienced but still struggle sometimes to shorten and put on a new chain. The same with other simple tasks. Sometimes you forget how to do repair X because you do them very rarely. So don't underestimate the importance of mastering simple and small tasks 😮👍

Remember: "Super Thanks" go straight to his heart! - (Which he also lubricates w/ Tri-Flo.) My best maintenance "trick" is to store my bicycle in the garage or house. In the house is nicer, especially in Winter, for working on it, but the Tri-Flo gets on the carpet, and the furniture polish and tire protectant get on the linoleum, making it slick and unsafe, especially in socks.

Ive done a tuneup on a similar bike like this. Had to rebuild the gearshifter a bunch of the plastic bits were broken had to figure out a way to take parts from a doner shifter. Also had issues with the seat forgot what but i knew i had to take it apart. Hate these shifters just because the amount of plastic moving parts in them. I had a shimano thumbshifter held together by electrical tape on a Motobecane nomade for years. I normally just use Philwoods grease for my cable runs not oil. And i like to put grease on the adjusting screws for the cantalievers. Not a fan of the treks from this generation Schwinns were the high point of my day. Lots of them in Chicago built like tanks good tolerances if something was wrong easier to fix.

BikeFarmer, how can one distinguish between a Phillips and a JIS screw without messing them up first with the wrong screwdrivers?

Just give the screwdriver a gentle twist and wiggle in the screw before you actually try to turn it. A proper fit will have no free play.

I love watching basic tune ups like yours. I just had to ride a new trail on a bike I'm selling that's way too small for me. And I'm one of those guys that gets absolutely crazy from brake contamination..just a little bit less power and it's a problem. So I'm wondering how the fxxk do you brake if you have no issues with oily stuff. It's just so hard to imagine it not being a problem when ur used to just 1 drip of wd40 being enough to get my seatpost too slippery. Just water on my hydraulic disc brakes is enough..i need a youtuber to test this one and for all..and a brake pad sponsorship is gonna be helpful. Ps: i need excellent brake performance for wheelies and stoppies/endos

I recently picked up a 90's specialised cross trail for £50 that had brand new continental tyres put on. I tightened the quick release wheels, adjusted the brake pads, lubed and then polished with a can of GT85 pretty much how you showed in the video and only used an allen key! I only have room for my surly preamble inside the house so the specialised is my shopping bike that lives outside now! Its so comfortable. The only thing I cant do is unseize my seatpost, ive tried boiling water to expand the metal and lube spray, any tips?
