Your welcome! Thank you for the comment! For the rotten threshold, you can buy new ones at Home Depot or Lowes (composite ones that don't rot). Basically just remove your rotten one and clean up the area, figure out the correct position for the new one by setting it in place and closing the door(making sure it lines up), then just use some good construction adhesive and glue it down well. It's not to difficult.

Thanks for the upload. I just did mine, waiting to cure to sand. Much cheaper than a new door for sure. I had some dog chewing and slight rot. I cut mine out 2-3 inches above the rot and made sure I was into good wood. I used treated wood for filler and used this epoxy to get the original shape back. Most of my voids were filled with treated wood. Also you could've used an oscillating tool with a wood cutting blade on it to get your channel cut out for the seal. It's also good for cutting out the rotted wood. I think you should've removed more of the bad wood but overall it was a good informative video. Thanks.

Great video and thanks for the DIY tips. When I went to Home Depot, they didn't have the Elmers Damaged Wood Repair System but they had Bondo putty and hardener (2 parts had to be mixed) so I purchased that instead. I just finished the repair (after I scraped out all of the wood rot). I had to do it in several steps waiting in between or each patch to dry (3-4 minutes each time). I am hoping that my fix holds. Tomorrow I will sand it down, prime it and paint it.

Hi, thanks for making this video. Would you recommend this approach for larger voids? And for more complex frame shapes, are there any tools or methods you'd suggest to max it more manageable?
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 8 жыл бұрын
+fluxquantumbeta Your welcome! Not much larger, I don't think so. For complex frame shapes, if you are talking about trim profiles, you can consider taking a putty knife and cutting it very carefully to math the profile of the trim. Just google "putty knife trim profile" or something and you should get it. For basic shapes though I have found that just a small putty knife and my hands are the best tools coupled with plenty of water. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@TripSmith I'm in the same boat. F**KING dogs completely tore up the wood trim on the outside door to the backyard. I had bought some wood filler in a tube from home depot to fix the same issue on the door going from the garage into the house, which works ok, but I'll try my hand at the elmers kit as I like how you can just hand mold it rather than using the stuff I bought which has required multiple layers that needed to dry before the next was applied. Thanks buddy.

I enjoyed your video and would like to get at lest one more year on my door. I was wondering if have used PC rot repair kit or do you prefer Elmer's products?
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you enjoyed my video. I have never used the PC product so I can't speak on it. I did look it up however and it appears to be very similar. Without getting my hands on it though I'm not sure I could give you a good answer. It looks like the prices are pretty similar. Not sure if you could get your hands on the PC kit but if you could I would check and see if the putty looks like it would be easy to mold like plado. I know the Elmer product is nice to work with so that would probably be the biggest thing I would compare. It does however look to me like it could be more difficult to get the PC putty out of those cans when I know the Elmer putty is really easy to get it out and to get the correct 50/50 portions out.

This is very helpful. I just want to know if I should remove the trim around the door on the inside and outside to see how much rot there is? Also, I plan to replace the flooring in the foyer which is vinyl over concrete. Is there anything else I should be checking before putting down new flooring?
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 7 жыл бұрын
I'd probably take of the trim if you are unsure. Not really on the flooring but you could check and be sure that under the door threshold is sealed well with something. Often times water can seep in under the entire door....

Tear down the house and start over as I'm sure it's the only way to cure the disease that will come from a simple rot at the base of a door frame! Many have died and houses have been seen crumbling to the ground from a partially rotten section of a door jam being repaired in this incomplete temporary manner. People freak the Hell out about some teetsy weetsy tiny imperfections don't they? Most people commenting will be dead before your repair will cause any real structural damage that can't be fixed in a 5-6hr span in a more complete sound manner. Absolutely fine for a temp fix or even a second time fix in 3-4 years...not a big deal and very cheap for those on a fixed income (more than 50% of nation). I like it. Did similar to my 75 yr old house on some Windows until I had Windows completely restored. Sometimes the problem at hand has to be put into perspective in relation to budget and overall actual damage. Do more vids and cause more people to huff and puff and shake their know it all heads in disbelief at the pure Hell your repair has caused. Bet that wood rot still hasn't made it past the jam and if so, it's about another hours work to just frame the whole door out again, big whoop.

Lloyd Christmas, Very well said! You’ll always get these internet experts in any sort of DIY repairs (home or Auto) and some are very knowledgeable and I’m sure mean well. I think you really made an excellent point with the financial part though. Most don’t have the money to spend or sometimes the time to rip it all out and do it “right”. I think that a repair like this, at the very least, should stop any additional water/rot damage for a considerable time.

+Sam kogan You betcha Sam! In quality in general, no. But in this situation something more putty like is better. You can add something to the gel to make it more putty like if you find you are having trouble. Something like really fine saw dust if you have any laying around would do great.
