My Schlage interior door latches do not have the metal tab to adjust. House was built in the 70's. How would you recommend we fix the door rattle if there is no tab to adjust out to the 30 degrees you mention in your video.

I am way too old to have taken this long to use KZbin to solve this problem. Seriously, like 2 yrs of just pushing a big sandstone in front of my bedroom door.. so dumb! I just jumped around both sides of my door and zero rattle was heard, thank you!!❤❤❤

Greetings, I've been watching your videos and have been able to fix a couple of the door issues, but still have problems with some of them. I had an entry door installed, and just put in the door handle. The handle and the deadbolt do not align. I use the grinding method with other doors, but I'm not sure if that'll do the trick with my entry door. Suggestions? I watched the other video for the sagging door and can't find a solution. Awesome videos good sir.

What are the gaps like on that entry door? Does it look like adjusting it would help out the latch situation?

Sometimes I found this didn’t do the trick. So you know those little adhesive plastic round things that are on the bottom of knickknacks or pieces on a table or mantle? I bought different sizes of these and I put one or two on the door frame. This eliminated the rattle because after adjusting the strike plate, there were still some room between that and the door jam or whatever you call it.

I had no idea. Thanks! I am pretty sure I've read the door latch install instructions but I don't think this feature was ever explained. They probably just copied someone's design and don't even know what the feature is for. Just checked a strike plate at the condo in Whistler I am staying at to avoid heat dome - no tab! These guys definitely didn't know what the feature was for.

Often the tab will simply bend back over time, especially with cheaper strikes. The trick here is to cut a strip of regular non-compressible cardboard and fold up enough layers to fit behind the tab to shim it in place. Pull the strike plate, insert shim, replace strike. Old packaging, boxes, or even a business card works great for this, just be sure the folded width is enough to keep it from falling out. If the jamb hole is bored through without a bottom, glue the shim in place. Now the tab can't bend back and you're done. If you bend the tab too far, the plunger will ramp back if you push on the door letting it open without touching the knob even if it's locked. This is worse with cheap or worn lockset plungers. Moving the strike is the only real fix here. But how far to move it? Most of the time there's enough gap between door and frame to allow the strike to lay on top of the frame, so remove the strike, move it to tighten latching 1/32" or so, put one screw back in starting it at a slight angle to catch new wood then screw it down just snug there. Carefully check the latching gently and if needed try again, this time using the other screw hole. Once you get the latching tight, open the door and hold the strike steady, then use your utility knife to scribe by the protruding strike to mark how much wood needs to be removed. Remove strike and make your cuts. Cut some slivers from scrap wood to fill in the old screw holes, glue them and drive them in snug cutting off the excess. Install the strike and you're done. If the door isn't warped at the top where it meets the strike side of the stop molding, sometimes putting a stick-on bumper made for cabinet doors and drawers on the stop molding will take up the slack for a quick-and-dirty fix. It;s hardly noticeable if you paint it to match. Or do similar at the bottom of the door but it will be more noticeable there.

Hmmm my problem isn’t addressed. I went out drinking again with the guys. Came home to find my key didn’t work in the front door. Very strange, and to add to the mystery I found my stuff strewn about the front lawn. My wife said something about “fixing me”, so I can only assume I need to fix the door? Send help, and a six pack of beer. Ok jokes aside, these are great! Thanks as always! R

Gayle Scovel if you pull the tab out too far it can prevent the latch from fully engaging. Also potentially the latch may be too low and not popping in the strike plate?

Adjusting the tab gave me more problems. Not far enough out, and it still rattles. Too far out and the door doesn’t latch shut. AND… when I’ve got it where it should be right, any amount of force pushes the latch over the tab.

According to my research 🧐 homes with married couples have a 98% chance of this at their residence. Aggressional Rattle Disorder or ARD however is also prevalent in homes with teenaged HERS. (See I know my pronouns) . Fortunately studies show that this greatly decreased after said individuals leave for college. Divorce quickly remedies the other cause. Repairs prior to either are...🤦‍♂️🤣
