Hey, couple notes on this for people learning and good practices for game dev: - If possible, always make your shells straight. This will result in cleaner normal map bakes and will also allow you to further edit the texture easier - When packing, consider padding between shells. In this example, 3 pixels are too tight and will result in texture bleeding when viewed from far away. For a 2k map, 8 pixel is the goal for example - Geometry/Tri-Count still definitely matters, especially in a AAA setting. Nanite still struggles with interactables and skeletal meshes, so try to optimize your assets well. (it's a lot more loose these days, but still something to look out for)

2k is actually 16px apart from that you're absolutely correct and love that you point out this stuff out.

After 4 years of using Blender I am finally at the point where I can understand and absorb what Josh is saying about design philosophies (echoing, etc). I'm re-watching all of your videos bro since they bring so much more content to me!😀

Thank you for this. I really appreciate you showing the full workflow. This was only my second time using Substance Painter, but I see the advantages of it much more clearly now.

30:40 You can inset that hidden face and delete the majority of it so that you can still have a bevel and save on UV space

Painter actually has a neat feature that I think is a better workflow than manually painting textures. Do the same thing Josh does with the rubber texture (fill layer > add black mask), but add paint to the black mask. There are options you can find while clicked on the paint layer (it's on the top left I think) to paint polygons, faces, and meshes with a single click which I think is really useful.

Thank you so much for the tutorials you make available for all of us. I'm not sure what is my personal goal when it comes to a career in the game industry, I'm hanging on bewteen concept design and 3D modeling but whatever the road will take mae those tools I learn in 3D thanks to you and others will definitely help me in the long run with both of those profession. Thank you!

The polycount is crazy. Not really a proper way to make props but. You should make the hp and lp as well

People that say polycount doesnt matter as much for games anymore never worked for a studio 😂

Modern Hardware and GPU-based renders make polycount matter less then it used to.

@ddontyy no. this is a classic excuse of tool making technique obsolete. It's like when people said zremesher will get rid of retopology

Josh, I do appreciate all your videos. One important key point, is actually the fact, that I am missing in any of your tutorials to model after a concept design. Would it be possible, to create tutorials, for example, Guns and their concept design is done with Midjourney, and then take the sideview and show how to use all the tools and techniques to model something 100% after a concept design. I am using MJ for concept work, product design, drawings, outlines, sketches. Would eb amazing, thx for digging into that, appreciate it and keep rocking, cheers

This is so nice to just watch. thanks for upload and info :) Btw I wonder how AI tech is going to give more streamlined auto crorrection when it comes to uv and simmilar workflows.

your "better than blender" video got the most views on your channel , plasticity is a lot better for surface modeling and we would love to see more videos for plasticity

Is the free hard surface modeling tutorial up to date with Blender 4.0? In general, are tutorial videos for 3.6 outdated?

With all due respect to the author, this video has nothing in common with a real gamedev asset creation pipeline. I am talking about everything: lack of HP and further bakes (you can say this asset is mid-poly but it's actually not), asset polycount, unwrapping, UV packing, textruing. Newcomers learning this topic, please be warned. Please don't take this as an insult, but rather as a warning of how things really are in gamdev.

Don't waste your time with these guys. They give you terrible advice to sell their addons. If you do pay for their stuff they spam you with emails multiple times a day. If you unsubscribe from their emails they will delete your paid account.
