Simple Inverter Installation in Small RV

This video shows a simple install for RVers who need power for laptops or other small electronics or appliances when boondocking. My RV is a 2019 RPOD model 180, which is a small 20 foot travel trailer. I also have a 65 Watt Solar Panel that is very compact, and with my typical electrical usage keeps my batteries topped off.

I just bought this inverter. I really like it. It run silent for my usage approx. 50-200 watt. The fan never turn on and the inverter is cool to the touch. The only thing I changed is I replaced the stock cable with 4 awg cables.

I'm guessing that not all rv's have 12v "cigarette lighter" sockets that are usually for tv hookup along with a cable jack,but that's how I wired my inverter. I removed the wall plate 12v socket, and used the 12 volt feed to power my inverter. It's only a 200w/400w peak for powering a TV/ and DVD player or game console should we boondock on a rainy day sort of thing. My old trailer that I'm about to replace has 2 separate locations on either end. The new one that I'm taking delivery of in a couple weeks has 1 so far that I've found. Though I don't know why newer rvs don't have inverters from factory instead.... I'm also upgrading to a dual battery system as well.

I'm wondering how to hook this up to the batteries when I"m using 2 - 12v batteries wired in parallel. Do you attach the red/black wires only to one battery or both?

Hey Greg. Thanx for a terrific video. I'm in a similar situation as yours with an 18' travel trailer. I'm wondering if you'd have still wired into the converter/charger if your inverter was a higher output - say 1000 watts. Seems everyone wants the inverter to be almost co-located with the battery.

Hi Ken - I think this would depend on your particular RV, the inverter that you purchased, distance from the battery, etc. Best consult an RV technician, since I only "play one on TV".

How did you isolate your converter so you don’t have a power loop between inverter and converter? You didn’t use a transfer switch?

City of Rocks National Reserve in Idaho. That spot is all the way at the end of the steep campground road. I enjoyed it immensely!

I’m sorry but that electrical cabinet is an absolute nightmare.. Why is it so messy and has no labels? You shouldn’t need to use a voltmeter to find the power from the batteries. Also is your system ran with romex wire?? Super unsafe if so….
