Love this. Like Dave Ramsey says... people are going to belittle you for frugal living and trying to be debt free... but they're the ones that are the butt of the joke, because they HAVE to go to a job every day and if they miss more than a couple paychecks, they're screwed! That person isn't a free man, he has signed himself into being a virtual slave to his possessions.

Great video! I have been telling my kids for years to never finance anything because it's a trap that deters you from living like you want to. Well,,,,, my son at age 13 has started a savings in which he takes half of everything he earns on mowing lawns etc. and intends on buying a piece of property and building a small 1 bedroom home when he graduates high school! Think about what freedom a man has when he is not in debt to anyone / anything and has the ability to live the way he chooses. Thanks for sharing your life with us all, it is an inspiration to everyone who enjoys the great outdoors (me and my son included)!!

I agree with you on living simply. I bought my first and only home 37 years ago, a 2200 sg ft cape code colonial wood framed home. Because I quickly got rid of my mortgage I put three sons through college(George Mason, UVA, and Virginia Military Institute), all my vehicles are paid for and I am debt free. No one else I know is debt free. The Lord has blessed my family and we now have time and freedom to serve Him.

Hey JC! Well said! I am beside myself with all the negative comments posted about this video!!! It appears "some viewers" look too deep into your videos. They need to take what you say at face value. Look at society today, compared to 40 years ago. Today everyone needs three cars in the driveway, a 2,500 square foot house, 2-3 cell phones, all the cable channels and 2-3 expensive vacations a year! People today have a standard of living far much higher than our parents and grandparents. Back when you and I grew up we were happy with the rabbit ears and just five stations on the TV! JC, please don't let these negative comments stop you from continuing this series, or any other videos on other subjects. I love all your videos, and can't wait for the next one. God Bless and Merry Christmas to you and Frankie!!!

These two videos really shined light on how I want to live. I've wanted this all along, but like you said everyone expects you to go down the railroad track. Everyone tries to influence you on how you should live. Well I'm not letting that happen! Me and hubby has been building is a 16x24 house, it's perfect for us and you can always add on. In fours years we will be debt free from vehicles. We will only have electric (maybe invest in solar) , car insurance, phones ( so tired of social media), groceries, and just live our lives and have experiences instead of stress. Sounds like a life for me!

I'm so glad you're doing a series on this topic. We are completely on board with your ideology. Our dream is to have a small, self-sustaining homestead. My husband wants to have his own business; he does woodworking. We want a small farm....chickens, a few sheep, a few pigs, and a pick-your-own blueberry patch. Hubby also wants to build shelves and sell them online. We've already got the 10 acres with the blueberries. We want to build a small house on the 10 acres. We've got two major obstacles to our dream. One is our current house. We seemed to be trapped in it. The foundation has been moving. We spent $13,000 to get this "fixed." But the house is still moving. We were told we had "a drainage problem" and would need a French drain. We spent $5,000 on that. We thought we had to do this or our house would have never passed inspection when we put it on the market. So, $18,000 spent, problem unresolved. We've thought about walking away from it and letting the bank have it but we really need the equity from it to build our new house, which we would really like to do without a mortgage. Our other obstacle is our health insurance cost. My husband is currently employed and we pay less than $200/month for medical insurance. If he were to quit his job to pursue his business, we'd have to pay about $800/month for medical insurance. We can't afford to do this while we start our homestead/business. We've looked into those medical bills sharing programs but you pay all that money it doesn't really cover anything. It isn't cost effective. If we'd had the wisdom and dream 20 years ago, we could have obtained the dream by now. But we didn't. It feels like we may finally attain our goal in 20 years when we are about 65-70. By then, we probably won't be physically able to live out our dream. It seems like if you develop this dream late in life, you may not be able to attain it. We are frustrated but determined. We just don't know how to get where we are trying to go, you know?
