First time watching this vid, but happy that you've mentioned Ian Shepherd, becuse I came across Ian via PLAP and have since subscribed to Ian's channel and to his podcasts. When the budget allows, I'll also probably grab one of his courses, but there's lots of free info available. Apart from the benefit of being able to start home-mastering better, a lot of what I've looked into so far, also feeds back nicely into mix engineering and gets you thinking about loudness levels from the outset; looking after your dynamic range, staturation, transient shaping and crest factor. While I agree, it's good to take your work to a pro mastering engineer; the cost is too great at the moment. There is only me, so it's good to know you can feel comfortable in this area - mastering was for many, the dark arts, but it's processes we use already. Granted, I haven't got the experience & ears of Ian or Bob Ludwig (for we are not worthy...) we can grow :-) Thanks for your vid, Chris

Great lesson and video pal. I’ve never got to this stage before all I have ever done is put some presets on my master strip on the mix console then done a audio mixdown. I then thought that the wav file I’m left with is the finished product. Am I correct in saying that it’s better practice to do the audio down and then reintroduce that file into cubase for mastering? As you can see I’m confused as to which part is mastering. Thank you to any body who can help me understand this process as I’m a bit dim when it comes to producing, it’s a steep learning curve.

The way you do it also works if you're releasing one song only. If you're working on several songs that will be part of the same album or EP, mastering those mixes outside the mix session is the way to go. On my side, whether I mix one or several songs, I always keep mastering separate from the mix. Here are videos I did talking about mastering and Mix bus processing kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3qQpmmVj9ZqfLM kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3Wtf36CYtplsKs

If you master for video should you roughly leave 1.5db of headspace? And when leaving head space do you use the brickwall output and leave the stereo out / master fader at 0 or would you use the fader? I understand the best way would be to have the final faders at unity and do compensations in the Maximizer out section.
@mixdownonline7 жыл бұрын
1.5db makes sense... Yes, I do leave my fader at 0 and use the brickwall output to ajust. :-)

@mixdownonline5 жыл бұрын
Good question...No cause when I do an automation fade out on the entire mix, I don't want the amount of signal that goes in the Limiter to change depending on the level of the fader.
@billymack42585 жыл бұрын
@@mixdownonline Cubase tutorials say use the post slot for limiting etc.. so thats the way Ive been doing it. Is there any loudness or sound quality difference ? Thanks Chris!!
@mixdownonline5 жыл бұрын
If you keep your fader at unity point (0) it won't matter if you're pre or post. If you're planning on doing fader automation for a fade out, now putting the master channel on post will send less signal to your limiter when bringing the fader down.

thanks....great video as usual Chris!...a question: if I heard it right you master on 48 Hz and not on 44.1 ?.... does not give that a problem in a later stage for e.g. the cd production?
@mixdownonline7 жыл бұрын
I master at whatever sample rate the song was mixed on...Could be 48 or 44.1 or even 96kHz if that's the case but I setup my session at 32bit float but 24bit is fine too...Now I didn't cover bouncing for CD production. in this case, you have to export to 44.1/16bits and use a Dithering Plugin setup to 16bits for dithering... I think I will do a vid on that. Good question :-)

Great Video again ! But I´m confused of LUFS Output, I saw in your Video Chris that you have -10 LUFS, isn´t that very HOT ? High Volume ? Cubase talking about -24 LUFS output which seems to me far too low Volume ! I guess LUFS is the same as -18 dB, It.s just Another scale or ? Thanks again for Great Vidos !
@mixdownonline6 жыл бұрын
In my video, the Cubase LUFS meter is not activated, so don't base yourself on this... I usually stay at around -11LUVS on average, when mastering or like shown in the vid, peaks at 0VU when calibrated to -10dbfs. To have a correct LUVS reading you need to play the mix from top to end so the meter can do an average. I'm gonna have Ian Shepherd on the show in the near future to talk about this :-)

I've spoken with some engineers who want to charge $500 per song. As a smaller indie producer, there is no way I can afford that. I clicked on this thinking it would be simple for someone still learning mastering. I think the title is a bit misleading.
@mixdownonline5 жыл бұрын
That is as simple Mastering can get. Mastering is not made for everyone. I have to say that $500 to master a track is quite expensive. Unless that engineer gave you a quote for mixing, that would make more sense. Most mastering engineers will charge between $75 to $150/song for mastering.The top commercial guys might charge more for label work.

So, 48k and 32bit for mastering, why not 48k and 24bit (session setup )Is this a big different?
@mixdownonline7 жыл бұрын
+irecki1 no, it's not a big difference...without going too technical, 32bit is a floating point based on 24bit... So no worries if you do so, just don't mastering at 16bit. 48khz is the sample rate I used in the video cause that's the way it was mixed... When I get a mix in 44k, I master in 44k :-)

For 120.00 you get extensive tutorials on Cubase 3 through 9. I found that the best tutorials for Cubase 5 are the ones for Cubase 4 because there was not a lot of stuff added between 4 and 5. I have found that many times on tutorials they assume that you owned the previous version. if you have no plans to update. Mac Pro is great. If you ever update to lets say 7,8 or 9. Chris is the man.

I don't understand what does the VUMT do? why do you calibrate it to -10?
@mixdownonline6 жыл бұрын
That's only a reference metering point similar of what I'm getting with RMS and LUFS. Most of the time people will use RMS metering, the K-System and LUFS and aim for an average of -12 to -10 which will give a more average metering of loudness. K-System and LUFS is available on the Control Room on Cubase Pro. Here's a good read from my friend Ian on RMS vs K-System www.meterplugs.com/blog/2016/10/14/k-system-metering-101.html

Hello Chris: thank you for your video. I read in many places the reasons to send your mix to another person for mastering, or alternative to wait a couple of days or weeks to master the mix if this will be made by myself, but could you please explain your own reasons to say that? Thank you again!
@mixdownonline7 жыл бұрын
The reason I send my mix to a mastering engineer is to get another set of ears working on my project. If I record and mix a project, I'm a bit too close to the project and when mastering comes, it can affect my judgment at this final stage. So the mastering guy will identify problems (If so) more easily since he has a fresh pair of ears and works the mastering way better. If for whatever reason, I do the mastering myself, I will definitely wait a week or so to master without listening to the mix so this way, I clear my ears off the project before the final stage. Gives me better judgement.
