How to very simply modify, adjust and weaken a small strong compression spring using a bench grinder and buffing machine. Plus cutting a spring to length and resetting the end coil square.

I have seen alot of socalled gunsmiths cut off a spring to reduce the spring pressure and mess up the spring. You are the first I've seen lighten a spring the correct way. Good job.

Do you know how to strengthen a compression spring? I am referring to the splutch spring on on some washing machines that seem to get weak and not allow the splutch to work properly such as switching the machine between Spin and Wash. Can I just stretch the spring, or would it need to be tempered or treated some way? Maybe leave it the length it is and retemper?

Useful approach Steve... changing spring rating is a patient process. That seems to work very well, nice. I doubt your temps have gone quite so low as mine - my shop is a total freezer!

Hi Chris you are getting some pretty extreme weather over there, aren't you? I live on a river flood plain so it gets pretty damp as well when its cold. When I was filming the other day the camera lens misted up a bit for a while, so I think I will wait for things to improve a bit before I do anything else!

The 180 grit is a bit coarse and does produce a few sparks when the wheel is first applied. Its great for deburring, plus you can carefully shape flat brass and other soft materials with it

@@SteveJordan No worries :) Just to update, I successfully reduced the stiffness of a 750lbs RS Coil Spring for a full suspension bike. Prematurely spray painted it and tested it out, turns out I took off too little material, but can definitely feel that it's made it, perhaps 5-10% springier, which makes sense, so I will have another go at it tomorrow to make it just right :)

Compress the Spring and leave it compressed for 2 weeks or so to weaken it, no grinding needed
