You are super good with this video, super timing. I'm doing 25 tunnel portals for my layout, gradually getting simpler and simpler as enthusiasm is being tested to the limit. Card is a very good medium, and I feel much overlooked

If you're getting tired of the tunnel portals, work on another project and go back to the tunnel portals when inspiration strikes again for them. Model railroading is supposed to be fun after all.

Great Video. I am always interested in cheap easy methods. Although I don't need any more tunnel portals I am sure I will be able to use your plaster over cardboard method for walls etc elsewhere. Thanks for posting.😀

I already tunnel portals from Woodland Scenics, so I will simply use them as a template. I would never have thought of that before. How did you paint the interior of the tunnels ? Are they simply bare rock ? Or are they lined with brick, or cut stone, or concrete ?

Hi Cam, I saw your layout dimensions on your Facebook page. Is the width of the room 12 ft wide at the widest point? As in where the room bumps out for the loops? Thanks - Steve

Hello I came across this video in search of making portals for my layout (BTW: Great video). Your video prompt me to look at the material I have laying around and I found I could use tempered hardboard. The question I have is how much plaster did you use to cover the portals and tunnels? Was it a thin layer? I'm looking to see how much did the plaster add to the overall thickness of the portal. I'm not sure if I need to add plaster to the entire portal or just the sides to hide the individual stacks of hardboard glued together. Hope this makes sense.
@railfan22018 күн бұрын
You're correct, it was a very thin layer. I added just enough to give it a bit of texture and to smooth out any imperfections. I'd say at max the plaster was 1/16" thick. Personally, I think the final product would look best if you added plaster to the front of the portal as well simply because it creates a pretty decent concrete-looking texture. Of course with hardboard, if you're adding plaster to the smooth side (I know sometimes there's a rough side and a smooth side), you'll probably want to sand it down a bit to allow the plaster to bite. Otherwise, it just slides around, which is an issue I had a bit of trouble with using cardboard. Hope that helps! -Cam

@railfan220 Cam, thanks for the info. The hard board is smooth on both sides. I was thinking of just painting it, but the you are correct with adding the plaster gives it a more textured look. I have a few scrap pieces to work with before I apply it to the final product. Thanks again.
