Simple Minds - Once Upon A Time (DVD-Audio Version)

Stereo version of title track taken from DVD-Audio issued in 2005.
This has since been deleted and can fetch silly prices on auction
sites.
There are numerous subtle differences compared to the standard
album mix.
Most obvious being a longer ending with more emphasis on the bass.
Really like this mix!

I was 14 when this album had came out. I still think about growing up in the '80s with all of the awesome music,stars,movies,and fashion. Ultra awesome album after 33 years.

Hi there Jason. The DVD-Audio of the whole album made me realise what a great job of production Jimmy Iovine and Bob Clearmountain had done. John Giblin is good, just a different player from Derek. All the musicians' that have played with the band have been excellent, just down to what is your favourite period! Anyway this track sounds best in this form and gets better with age. Better album than "Sparkle". See Ya!

Sparkle is a bit raw and plenty of good tracks - but Street Hassle? RLY? This album is all great songs and very polished, doesn't miss a beat like New Gold Dream. They weren't selling out, they were just selling.

Agree with what you are saying. I do remember being disappointed with "Waterfront" at the time of it's release and it being trounced by the "B" side. Kept me as a fan when i heard other tracks pre-release (Speed Your Love, Up On The Catwalk, East At Easter, Street Hassle). They were attacked for going all-american with "Once Upon A Time" but it is such a good rock record, who cares! Still wish they had done DVD-Audios' of "Empires" and "Sons/Sister". How good would those have sounded?

Wow, loads of subtle differences as you say. First time listener to this. There's some vocal reverb missing on 'that's time' and the congas are missing from the intro as well .. or low down in the mix ... if fact loads of it is down in the mix, the crescendo bit at 4:10 is fantastic.... Overall not a huge fan of this version but it's still mega, of course ...

It is the stupid recode made by youtube. Actual DVD is an ear orgasm to any SM fan, specially those who love this wonderful album.

Actually, what you're hearing is what happens when you take DVD audio that was remixed from the original 2 channel stereo masters with 3.1 additional channels added for 5.1 channel Dolby Surround Sound and then have to down convert the finished DVD back down to standard 2 channel stereo in order for it to fit into You Tube since You Tube doesn't yet support 5.1 channel Dolby Surround Sound. So, yes you can call it compression if you want to.

In this version the snare is slightly mastered down. In fact it is a snare from Premier Drums and very special. It's called 2009 Super Power Snare Drum.
