That is a Telma retarder. It stops the truck like a Jake Brake does. City buses and garbage trucks use them for city driving to keep the brakes from fading and wearing out. I am a diesel mechanic that has worked on both for over 40 years.

My father drove for several local sawmills way back here in Ky. and I believe they all sold lumber to a huge company in St. Louis. I'd always go with him there every chance I had. He'd always say when we were within sight of the big arch "Well there it is...the gateway to the west". Miss him every day.

The one with a person in the back is called a tiller truck. You steer to your left to swing wide to make a right turn. Doesn't take long to learn when going forward. As for the pump the big 6 inch on both sides and the front are called intakes, where water comes in from a hydrant or if your drafting. The 2.5 inch with caps on them are discharges to pump additional lines each one has their own valve and gauge for different pressures. The hand lines either come off the back or come off the top above the pump panel are called crosslays which are used to supply 1-3/4" hand lines used for attacking the fire which also have there own valve and gauge. As for pumping a little math and hydraulics skills are a must. Once everything is set up you just watch and make sure nothing happens. Also all engines have a relief valve you can adjust to keep from over pressurizing the different size hose lines. Hope this helps a little bit as Ive been retired after 30 years in the fire service.
@tucobenedicto109Ай бұрын
A co-worker told me; who is not a fireman, that the guy in the tiller is in there because he is not liked. I can't make that up. All firefighters are good, and it is an importnant job!

On the rear end what you saw was a electric brake retarder .it runs on your 12 volt battries. It has 4 power levels . The magnetic forse tries to spin the rotor in the opposite direction to slow the truck down . The power company i worked for had that unit on our bucket trucks .

Steve , as a retired firefighter of 33years i can tell you the unit on the drive shaft is a Telma industrial brake, also known as a electrokinetic retarder. when activated it generates a magnetic field around the drive shaft.......very dangerous on wet roads.

Learning to drive fire apparatus is one of the coolest things about being in the fire service, in my opinion. When you learn the basics on pumps, and start out with something like 500 GPM with a much smaller panel and less discharges and intakes, it makes understanding bigger pumps much easier. “Horse Feathers” knows about it. And maybe he would know someone with an old Tiller truck that could give you that experience you want 👍🏻 As for the Telma brake, the one department I volunteer with bought a 2022 Seagrave with a 95ft Aerialscope, GVW of 82,000lbs. That has the Telma brake, along with the engine retarder. That rig will come to all but a complete stop with them two operating together.

Steve for operation of the fire pump. Once you switch the control in the cab from road to pump & put in drive. The fire pump is alive. Two gauges on top are (left gauge) supply water pressure to pump & (right gauge) is discharged pressure to system. Now for the handles on the pump panel. Are color coded. Colors match location and pressure gauge and discharge locations. Normal all handles in valves closed. Tank to pump depends if you are in freezing climate (valve shut) & in warm climate (valve is open). Also turn handle 90 degrees will lock them in place. Besides the water tank. It also has foam system installed pre-piped in. That the Red cover plate above control valves. Another thing below discharge gauge of the pump. Rocker switches to blast air horn, tell if you are in pump mode, to turn on ground lights, working side lights and anything else might have. Under running board will be a main pump drain valve (drain pump of water for freezing weather). Little wheel with peg sticking out is pressure relief valve. (Once you have all hoses running for fire fighting, you can set your relief valve so if someone shuts down a stream the water hammer will be relief to suction side of the pump not to your other lines. That why I enjoyed being an Engineer! 27 yrs. Sorry it so long.

I think if you look around, i think you can find auxiliary heater units that can tie into the heater hose coming off of the engine that would upgrade your comfort in your truck. I know some of the trucks used to have them mounted underneath the passenger seat. A salvage yard might be a good a good place to start, one with class 8 trucks.

You can get rid of or just slightly attenuate (add or cut) the more annoying frequencies with Graphic EQ on your final edit, GoPro's are not stellar when it comes to sound quality really. You'll need at least 10 or more frequency bands to do it right, I use a 10 band on Final Cut Pro plus my Mac Book Pro has other audio tools that I can integrate with Final Cut for maximum flexibility. I've always found a Mac to be superior to a PC with both audio and video when it comes to deep(er) production work. The only issue I run into now a days is the many format changes that the OS, IOS and software systems go thru. I long for the old days of Firewire Plug and Play!
