Dell uses the term accurate when he means precise - that just grips my shit! Gate, Source, and Drain are on MosFET transistors. Base Emitter Collector are on npn/pnp (silicon) transistors. The diode function can be used as an audible continuity tester. Diodes have low (almost zero) resistance in one polarity (beep) and high resistance in the other (no beep) at operating voltages.
@gcbification3 жыл бұрын
Actually, diodes display a voltage drop across the junction, and this is what the diode mode on a multimeter is displaying -- the measured voltage drop across the diode, not it's resistance. That said, you can also use the resistance measurement mode of the multimeter to the same ends, but it's sometimes not the way to go (really fast recovery diodes for example, wherein the measured resistance is very low and can give the impression of a 'leaky' diode)
@FatParamotorGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@gcbification that is correct - however this potential difference is developed across the internal resistance of the diode which varies depending on its bias and working voltage. It’s still an indicator of resistance, though you’re correct that it displays this in volts. In diode mode the voltage is automatically increased until the diode becomes forward biased and displays this voltage. Resistance mode also measures the voltage drop, but doesn’t vary the applied voltage. Diode mode can still be used as a continuity tester on these cheap Chinese meters. The resistance explanation was for simplicity, though I understand how it may make some people twitch 🙂

@@FatParamotorGuy All good man, at least you knew it was coming =^) TBH, I'm still giggling about the zero point on his chinese meter...and fortunately, Del didn't present any real knowledge and basically left it up to the viewer to figure it out for themselves. As per my other comment here, with myself being a 60+ year old fart, the very moment old Delbollocks mentioned the 'deflection' related to changing the voltage measurement range, was the moment I knew he was regurgitating something that he'd read on a website, himself not able to do rudimentary research tasks online, and presents in this vid as 'his' experience/knowledge. The reason one knows this, is the only time you use the world deflection in relation to a multimeter (and other meters), is when that is an analog meter with a sweeping scale indicator needle -- when digital multimeters appears, you no longer can use deflection to describe a digital range presented as a decimal number --- this is why I heard the non-sequitur bell ringing in my head. Turns out, you can easily recreate what's happened here for yourself...true ;) Show you how....it's obvious we both 'know what we're talking about', but what we both have to do, is dumb ourselves down, to the point of being someone who's never used nor understands the use of a multimeter...m'kay? What are you going to do? You've got this digital multimeter, and no idea how to use it, and this lack of knowledge extends to the point that you don't know the intrinsic differences between an analog and digital multimeter.....in this day and age, you're going to google it, no brainer. Perhaps the first google search should've been something like 'what is a multimeter' and you would've found out there different types of multimeter, but very likely one search string is going to be 'how to measure resistance with a multimeter' ...you'll get a plethora of results, and among them you will find many instruction and tutorial links to find out how to do this. What you will also find, is that many of these references/sites, explain the analog multimeter use first (where the word deflection has a use), with another section there-under detailing how to do the same thing with a digital multimeter. There is one reference that's pretty easy to find, if you google for the search string 'deflection multimeter', and click on the hit from electronics-notes dot com, and have a read...just read 70% of the first section wrt analog meter use, put on your delboy suit and assume you know it all, and then create a youtube vid based on 'inappropriate' (at best) knowledge on/of something, you still haven't got a clue about....lol....what's not funny, is thinking someone -will- smoke the test leads, and I'm not even sure all cheapo chinese meter have fuses at all ; pretty scary thought =^/ I can't say recommending those cheap meters is doing anyone but the sells any favours..

There's specific automotive DMM's that have such functions built into them -- usually they come with a current-clamp as well so you can measure the charge current of alternator and/or the current being drawn by starter motors (which are things beyond the measurement capability on most DMMs )
@kamilbarnik4483 жыл бұрын
Ok, a few things: 1. That is a REALLY shitty meter! Do not buy that, get an auto-ranging meter (doesn't have to be a Fluke, like Matt's), they're not expensive there days 2. Don't go anywhere near the mains sockets with it, it WILL blow up in your hand if you accidentally switch it to amps (that's why decent meters have separate terminals for voltage and current measurements) 3. The input impedance of an electronic multimeter is way too high for a bike battery voltage to sag under measurement, if it does, that battery is really fubar'ed - i.e. holds NO charge, won't even power a digital clock. Want to test a battery properly - measure voltage under some load, an indicator light bulb for example 4. Don't bother with the HFE meter, you usually don't need it in an electronics shop, let alone in a garage. There are no transistors to test on a bike, unless you're taking the ECU apart, and even then, that parameter is of little interest 5. A shunt is essentially a known value, low resistance, high current rating resistor. It is used as the lady described, but doesn't have to be made out of that specific alloy. So no, fuses are not shunts, but every multimeter has at least one shunt - one per current socket, and should have a fuse per each current socket... unfortunately the one Del presented does not. Yet another reason why it's SHIT.

A simple skills video should have a few "do's" and "dont's" I think, i.e. - take special care while measuring current - all the other measurements should be pretty much fool proof, current is not - especially don't connect the meter across a bike battery or especially a mains socket and try to measure current - it WILL blow your mains fuse as well as something in the meter (preferably a fuse) - connecting the wires backwards is not forbidden, it will simply give you negative readings ;-) - measuring resistance in a live circuit is generally not a good idea, although it shouldn't damage a decent meter, a good meter will survive it when connected to the mains (tested) - if you plan on measuring the mains, make sure your meter has HRC fuses - they handle severe overloads a lot better than those dinky glass ones that Del showed One other thing I would suggest: get your meter, set it to voltage, connect it to your bikes battery, watch the reading, start the bike, let it run a bit, stop the bike, watch the reading for a couple more minutes. It'll give you a better idea of what's normally going on in your bikes electrical system then all of Del's videos ;-) ... just my $0,02

My brain hurts listening to this del guy 17:00 That meter puts almost no load on that battery. If its falling fast when you put that meter on that battery it is not holding the charge at current voltage, you need to wait to see if there is a voltage it holds stable. If it flat out falls bellow 11v for a 12v battery, there is a issue with the battery. To load test say this 12v battery it needs a load applied, say use a starter to see if stays above 10v cranking to check if good. 18:20 A test light is quicker to test fuses when in the fuse panel. 20:13 Wire on its self is resitance to flow of current, so the longer the wire the larger the gauge needed to transfer the same amps of current without over heating the wire. Making heat in the wire is loss of power at the output of the wire. Say under load one side of the wire checks 12v and the other side check to be say 11.50, That wire is good for the load. Say under load one side of the wire checks 12v and the other side check to be say 9.50, that wire is either bad or too small for the load given 23:40 those leads for the win, I have a similar end and another that will poke a hole in a wire. 24:00 I like the fluke 78 since can also do rpm and dwell For me I am mostly using a test light for simple stuff and for advanced stuff I grab my fluke 105b to get a wave form. A scope is good to have even if a crude one, it gives a means to see if there is a stuck pintle in a injector or checking coils for correct opperation for example. Checking coil you need to be carefull since the secondary is high voltage that can burn a meter, use a cop probe for secondary and 10:1 attenuating probe for primary. Having a scope/meter has the benifit of adjustments for probs where can use the meter side to get amp reading with a amp clamp. Can use a standard meter with amp clamps but would have to do math in your head to convert the reading to the actual amps. If you have a scope with a long capture time there are other things you do, say with the amp clamp you can crank a engine to check for a dead cylinder. A meter is only as good as the user and this del guy is not far past there is spark so must have adequate voltage state of mind.

The story is: Del, makes a bunch of videos, in these videos he claims to know what he is doing. (says he's 30 years experience, used to run a repair garage etc.) he (frequently) does things that are a bad way to do things, either, poor practice, dangerous, a very long way of doing something, a great way to break tools. - whilst claiming to be a master. KZbin offers (or used to offer) a few ways that the community could rate videos and the information contained within. - one of these was the (now hidden) like/dislike button, but (as pointed out in this video) Del hid that on this video (read, the ratio was poor (lots of dislikes) so to save his own face in public, he's stopped people being able to see that the video is not useful.) Another mechanism that KZbin offers that might provide some feed back to the community is the comments, - but where negative comments are put on videos, they are deleted by Del. In the end we're left with Del doing stupid or dangerous things, offering his weird little experiments as received wisdom (saying he has professional experience) and then removing any kinds of dissent on his video -so new people actually looking to learn are not able to know or understand that copying what he's doing is likely to ruin their day, or cause them to make a job cost more, or end up with a poor quality or dangerous result. Mat started commenting on Del videos some time ago, and in response to this Del suggested that his viewers should go and flag Matts videos for copy right claims etc, in the hope that Matt could get enough strikes on his channel that his videos, and all his work would be removed. When the amount of people commenting that Del was an idiot (or worse) increased on Dels channel - as people went there. Del decided that Mat was harassing him, and called the police. - and Mat was visited by the police who relayed the concern that Mat was orchestrating a campaign of online hatred and abuse towards him. So why does Del remove anything that suggests that he's not doing something right? - there are only two possible reasons. Either, Del is telling people to do stupid, dangerous, or wasteful things and removing anything that contradicts him because he values his own standing as a perceived expert in the community more than the people who watch his videos. or Del is telling people to do stupid, dangerous, or wasteful things and removing anything that contradicts him because he values a few quid in KZbin add revenue more than the people who watch his videos. (and I'm honestly not sure which is worse.) You should consider this (The Workshop) video series a public service.

You should just redo these videos the correct way and post them up. Would be more helpful than “look at this idiot”. I get this is for entertainment but I miss the informational videos from you to be honest. Not my channel, not my choice. Keep doing whatever keeps you on youtube

Frigging epic fail from the get go -- a digital multimeter does NOT display deflection, it displays a measurement reading digitally --- only an analog meter demonstrates deflection of the gauge indication needle....total boofhead. And how come he didn't grab a wire and cut through a few strands, to demonstrate the wire 'gaining resistance' as per his previous vid about soldering....and did he mention the fuse(s) inside the multimeter that can blow?....nah, he probably throws it away and buys a new one...what a muppet =)

Electrics/Electronics isn't a dark art, it's a lack of underpinning knowledge that's the problem, coupled with the fact that the screamer Del is continually spreading his mucky seed of dis information among the masses can only end in fail.🤦♂️
