Man your videos are great. You and Brian with Paint Society are the best, and I trust your ways more than the rest. There’s so much BS out there and it takes a LING TIME to filter it all out. I was in long term denial with air guns, and got ridiculously good with aerosol cans, but it just wasn’t good enough, and most of all, it took a long time for me to realize that the delivery system of propellant combined with a non-two-part product made for a sub-par end result. So I finally bought the bullet and got a bigger compressor and a couple of guns, and having learned best practices about the environmental needs, like dust control, panel cleaning, temp, humidity, curing, air flow, with which there are still questions, I’m proud to say my FIRST attempt with a gun was incredible. Of course I had another trial panel close by to check it all out, got the “squished football” pattern, and went at it. My primer coats looked like they were applied “as one”, meaning no splotchiness, smooth as can be, appearing as one full application, panel edge to panel edge. And it was a primer with hardener of course. Then the first color/base coat went on so well I almost had to stop and step back in awe. It’s a Chrysler brilliant black Pearl and I swear it looks maybe better than the factory paint. I had been using the SprayMax2K Glamour for clear, and got great results, with some orange peel, but have been able to cut and buff for great results. With this clear, of course a 2K, it went on very well, looked great, and I was careful to not pile it on, and as the second and third coats went on, it built up into a nice gloss. So here’s my question: could you please do a video tutorial explaining more in depth about how the various on-the-gun controls combined with air pressure at the regulator on the gun work to gather to reduce orange peel effect? I also noticed you had your regulator AFTER your desiccant. It seems kinda funny how we all use the compressor’s regulator leaving the unit, then a drier, filter, oil remover, then another drier, and another regulator. When I’m checking the pressure at the gun with only air the gauge seems to be stable, and we have to extrapolate what the paint manufacturer wants at the air cap, since that’s impossible to measure, and use their suggestions to figure the right pressure at the gun regulator. Fan wide open, but hen you used the term “volume”, where I’ve been reading about the air valve and the fluid valve. Which one is “volume”? And how do these all work together to make the most glassy finish? I know there are tons of variables, and I’ve read countless articles about how people blame orange peel, runs, sags, dryness, on everything but themselves. “This paint doesn’t flow out like that paint” seems like passing the buck to me. I’ve noticed that if the grit isn’t right for the application you could get runs and sags when the primer is going on with say 600 grit scratches under it. Same with color coat, of course too low grit will leave those scratch marks, but to high grit will look nice and smooth but it won’t adhere long term as well and runs will be a chore to prevent. I painted my panel after 320 sanding, and quadruplet cleaning and checking and air cleaning and had been cleaning the area for a week beforehand, blowing it out with a electric yard blower, then the next day or 12 hours later do it again, and again, keep the floor swept for the days leading up, and keep the humidity down so that when you mist the area with water for dust control you don’t end up with too high humidity. So my first spray gun attempt had ZERO dust nibs, which I thought was impossible, and zero fish eyes, same. So that’s good. Uniformity is top notch. But orange peel is pretty gnarly and if I course I could cut and buff but the whole point is to do less correction and more get-it-right-the-first time. I’m fine with OEM orange peel. And what do I look out for while spraying to make adjustments on the regulator pressure and the gun adjustments? I’ve got a good eye, just not sure which adjustment will do what. Big thanks. How long after your base clear coat until you spray the silver base coat? 10 minute flash I’m guessing. So to simplify things for me: Base clear coat X 2 with 10 minute flash between coats Base color x 2 with 10 min flash The clear you used, 2 coats back to back due to the 30 minute dry time. Thanks - your channel is awesome

Thomas you have it exactly right. If your doing a tough blend somtimes it's beneficial to blend your color right after you lay down your clear basecoat or wet bed. It won't hurt anything and a coarser metallic will lay down nicely in a wet clear basecoat. Ethier way is fine I use both techniques depending on the situation. Thanks for watching hope this helps.

If your garage has a ceiling rather than open rafters and try to blow everything clean you can probably get a pretty nice job done right in your garage. Alternately if you have open rafters its almost impossible to get that clean and dust free. Any little breeze can drop dust onto the paint job with an open ceiling. If this car is your pride and joy. I'd suggest getting an inflatable spray booth or put up a plastic or tarp enclosure with fans and filters. You can get through most of the project without it up until after your final sanding. But IMO base/clear really needs to be sprayed in as close to a pristine area as you can get if you dont want to be sanding dust and dirt out of your paint job. the roof trunk and hood are the parts that'll probably get any dust the most. I've seen a lot of people spray the hood and trunk lids hung vertically to avoid the dust issue in a garage.

This video made me wonder. Being a aluminum vehicle I wonder how it rusted? Is it some kind of blended metal between steel and aluminum? Im thinking steel rust and aluminum corodes.

I think I asked you this before but does your air compressor have a moisture remover? And do paint gun regulators come with the gun or you have to buy separately?
@GarageNoise

Some paint guns come with regulators but most don't. I have a inexpensive oil air dryer along with a inline filter and pressure regulator.

Hey GN, brilliant once again. I see you have a heat lamp going there, I paint in cold weather and when I venitilate my garage am always concerned about the temp of the metal. What is the min temp that you try to keep your panel at? ( For base coat and clear)

@@CA-pv5ie on a cold day I will put a light coat of base on first then build up the coverage slowly. Allowing more flash time in between coats. Also use faster reducers and activators. For clear lighter on first coat longer flash time before second coat then clear normally. Hope this helps

Okay one more question. 😂 What can cause cracking paint, cat or fish eye? Shrinking body filler?
@GarageNoise
@GarageNoise 2 жыл бұрын
Cracking paint is mostly due to the sun or environment. Filler shouldn't really shrink. Fisheyes are from silicone, oils petroleum base products.
