Transistors get forward bias when we supply voltage to Base and emitter. Once the transistor get forward the current flows from collector to emitter. and once we make it reverse bias, current flow from collector to emitter stops. this acts like a switch.
We used this property of transistor to switch relay. So transistor is just a switch or you can call interface between your micro controller and relay to turn on and off electrical appliance.
Don't forget to watch the Proteus simulation of the transistor and relay at 2:06 of this video.

Well lets say you have a 400v motor here insted of the 12 v motor, having to deail with 400 v for controll signals is not convinient since micro controllers cant handle such high woltage and I.m not shor if the relay in this exsampke can be controlled wit 3.3 V (normaly the putton in this exsampke wit nit be a button put n outpoy pinf from a microcontroller)

Thank you for the time and effort you put into your video. Would I need a certain type of relay to switch an AC motor (under 10A) on'off based on the voltage of a DC power source (12v-24v)? For example: I want my AC 120v fan to turn on when my 12VDC battery bank drops to 10.5v and back off once the bank voltage reaches 14ish volts. I know I can connect an under voltage/over discharge module to connect/disconnect the battery, but I need a relay to keep the AC and DC currents isolated from each other. I'm sure I'm probably making this out to sound more difficult, but I am new to electronics. Thanks and apologies in advance.

@12alimaher
@12alimaher 7 жыл бұрын
even with the micro controller we can connect one of its gpio pins directly to the relay and it will work isn't it ?
@MyElectronicsLab
@MyElectronicsLab 7 жыл бұрын
No, That's not recommended, Two case: Case 1. Lets say your reply is of 12V or 5V and microcontroller gpio is 3.3V, and Case 2: Your relay draws 50mA or more and MCU gives 10mA , in those cases you have to use transistor. You should not ever put load on MCU, because they are not rated, If you read datasheet of any MCU and compare current need and deliver, you can easily guess. :) , Hope I cleared your doubts.

The relay is 12v while the controlling voltage is 3.3v so it can never ever turn the relay on! So, basically the idea is that the 3.3v turns on the transistor which allows the 12v to switch on the relay. Luckily there are lower voltage relays like 9v, 5v and 3v. So, that helps if you were using a microcontoller(uC/MCU) to turn the relay on.
@MyElectronicsLab
@MyElectronicsLab 7 жыл бұрын
yes you are right 3.3v realy are also now a days available, but problem is current, if you are connecting more relay, then its not advisable to draw lot more current from mcu, which can damage mcu.

Hehehehe. How well do you actually understand electronics? It's a kinda silly statement u know... why use a transistor when u can just use a switch? U know.... sometimes you want things to turn on and off without you being there to operate the switch... Does that clear things up a little bit for you?

I request you to read datasheet of the BC547. Vceo of Transistor is 45V, and Ic(Collector current is 100mA)which is practically more than enough to drive a small relay. I have tested more than 50 times in my last projects. So be assured. Hope it make clear, you can always ask, if still any confusion. :)

transistor will help to switch/connect the collector and emitter which is 12 v which is from other source. and with the base of transistor act a switch which only needs a few milliamps to connect the col and em.
