Great job. "Just get out there and do it!" was my same rant in my latest bushcraft video about use of available cordage and not making excuses for not having paracord. Well done! Sardines are money. Did the same on a running poll set with a 220.

Also, you don't have to literally use a can of sardines on this trap. You could take aluminum foil and simulate the same shape. Use trash found on the shore, who cares. Get a bunch of fish guts or fish oil and cheap dog food as the bait. The main take away is that you need a visual attractant, edible bait that smells, and a container of some kind that prevents easy access to the bait.

i used sardines alot as a school boy trapper. i checked my traps in the am and reset or made/moved sets after school. our local mom n pop store only hadem in mustard sauce. i didnt have the money to use one can per set so id use the juice and little bits and try to make 3-5 sets and id eat the bigger chunks on saltines then use the "empty" can in the last set after i ate.. .39/can back then. i still use simple sets but prefer lure most days. jack mackeral works too and can be added/mixed with syrup etc to stretch it out .nice video. i also still wrap some of my trap pans with aluminum foil etc. KISS principle works better then alot of the new uber stuff/sets. when i use sets like the one in the video i prefer to place the dog towards the deeper water. its all personal preference and theres no wrong way. btw those no.11s are the best coon and mink foothold there is..ive used them for over 40 years.
@Meattrapper10 жыл бұрын
Yep - even the empty can works well as a smell and visual attractor. Love the #11's - what get's in - stays in! Take care buddy!
@streeterboyzoutdoors10 жыл бұрын
Iv used a empty tin can with the small drainage holes in the bottom like that, works great, half opened sardine can great idea.i see you put them split rings on ur trap, I read about a guy doin that so I bought 100 of them to put on my traps this year, makes it a lot easier to disconnect chain or cable stakes and extensions.
@Meattrapper10 жыл бұрын
Yep I really enjoy the split rings. Nice being able to change things around without fooling with s hooks or special tools.

Good info. I have a "blind set" for coon that also has aluminum foil on the pan right in the trail on a small mud bank going under a bridge. For some reason, I haven't got a coon yet. Plus, there were fresh tracks today. I figured I would get one on the first day to two. What do you think the problem is? If you don't mind, you could take a look at my most recent video titled "Making a few coon sets?" Its the last clip only I added the aluminum foil after the video. Thanks

long spring traps vs coil spring advantages of either or just preference?
@Meattrapper8 жыл бұрын
Now that's a can of worms! 9mm or 45? lol. Most people like coil springs these days because they can be had with laminated or offset jaws, and can fit in tight spaces. Some folks like the old long springs because they last forever, never need new springs and hold tenaciously. They are more expensive. If you are investing for long term, SHTF traps then longsprings can be worth the extra money. Most people go with coils these days. Mostly personal preference. Hey, that's pretty slick! How did you make your big pan?? In IA, we can use exposed bait over open water except in certain river corridors. So, a lot of fellas use a set called the fish stick set. What I did was I used 3' of 3/8 rebar in a cross style (watching your videos, I think fiberlgass would be just as good!!). I have a split ring on my foot holds and run the "stick" through the split ring so it also acts as a stake. I spear a chunk of carp on the "stick", and wrap some wire around it to the "stick". That set is deadly cause of the eye appeal. I trap for fur so using a two or three of these sets with blind sets can really hammer coon! Your sardine set reminded me of it so I thought I share! Thanks for all the awesome videos!
