Great job Jason. You got 'er done and I learned a new method. I bought my 2010 F-150 new and been working it harder as I turned 70 this year. Last pick up I'll ever need to buy. It has never seen salt or sand here in Nashua. Been hauling a travel trailer up to Maine with it. That little V-8 screams going up some of those mountains. I keep waiting for the transmission to blow. Thanks for the great post!

I learned this technique in the army. We would upright flipped Humvees in the middle of nowhere (we used to off-road and screw around a lot) with a 5 ft long 4x4 with a notch at the top and a 3/8th inch chain. Very effective. It kept us out of trouble because if we had to call a wrecker to come out with a boom and a winch to up-right us we would have to fill out a report.

I'm a retired contractor with about 45 years experience and by far, hands down, the best tool i've ever owned or used (and I've owned and used many!) is a Komatsu PC28 Excavator with a thumb. It makes short work out of removing small to medium sized stumps in about an hour. These small stumps would take maybe a minute or two each..... Larger ones can take a couple hours but not days, weeks, months, or years...I bought a "grey market machine" down in Oregon (no sales taxes) and it's paid for itself many times over. So many uses, i can't even list them all here and best of all, no more back breaking hard ass work!!! The machine does it all and is actually fun!! If you can afford one, you won't be disappointed...guaranteed!!!! (PS. I have 5 acres in Western Washington so it's a God sent!!)

Pulling with the front end of your truck is good because of the weight of the motor, instead of pulling from the rear with an empty bed. Also or shorter chain would give you more strength for the truck to pull the stump up easier, as opposed to a longer chain. Being a cowboy in roping cows, a longer rope gave the cows more advantage to pull your horse, a shorter Rowe gave the horse the advantage of pulling the cow. Also a stee truck l rim works as good as anyting, it won't fall over and it won't squat in the middle like your tire. Also shorten up your chain , you only need about four to five foot of chain running from the stump to your truck, it will be easier to pull and you won't have to be concerned about anything coming through the windshield. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the video and the tips! I've been watching some other videos and using a tractor wheel rim or a tire and wheel seem to be the superior way to pull the stump out (thank you physics). It seems that the bare wheel rim does better than a tire in most of the videos. The only reason I can think of is that the rubber tire seems to absorb and spread some of the pulling force through the tire, losing precious force to the tree stump (maybe why you have to rock back and forth more). The bare wheel rim also seems to stand on its own easier (doesn't fall over). I will be putting these methods to the test on several small trees that I need to pull up on my land. Also, thanks for the safety tip regarding the carpet piece.

Using a 5 ton harbor freight chain hoist and a neighbors spare tire to pull a camphor tree stump. Have to go around the trunk of the oak tree so the wheel is to get upward lift. Using 1/2" truckers chain, already broke 3/8" chain pulling pieces out. This stump is massive and been working on it since June. 12' across.

When I tried to pull an osage orange ("bodark") fence post using a tire rim and a 2-wheel drive pickup, all I got was a broken back bumper to frame connection. After thinking about this for years (I'm a slow thinker) and watching this video, I can see that I made 3 mistakes: 1. a tire mounted on said rim would have provided more leverage; 2. I should have attached the chain to the frame of the pickup; and 3. I should have waited for a good rain.

A rim without a tire would stand better and give the chain a grove to ride in. Need to take care the chain doesn't fly off and go thru the windshield. Would be an idea to drape something over the chain such as water hose, heavy coat, etc. Something that would slow the chain.

I "think" the taller the tire, the better the leverage in converting the sideways force of the truck pulling force to an upward lifting force on the stump. If that is true, then using a "tire rim" would almost defeat the purpose of the mechanical advantage. Unless the tire rim is from an old tractor, (as if everyone has one of those laying around)

If you do any actual pulling in reverse like that, instead of just using the truck's momentum , you'll end up wearing out the reverse band in your transmission prematurely. Take it from somebody who learned that lesson the hard way. Somebody on here was worried about the ring and pinion of the differential being biased toward forward, but that's not your weak point.
@michaeldose2041
@michaeldose2041 5 жыл бұрын
Andrew B, let me put my transmission nerd glasses on. The 4l60e does not have a "reverse band". I think what you are saying is reverse is not as strong as the 1st gear. I am not sure that is universally true, but sustained hard pulls from a stationary point will no doubt heat up your auto, just like it would heat up the clutch on an manual. You could do the same thing with a high lift jack or a come along. That said those are mighty small "stumps" so I doubt he put much heat on that tranny, or diff as some other commenter pointed out.
@michaeldose2041
@michaeldose2041 5 жыл бұрын
Or for that matter a not "modern" transmission. Automatics old or new are not supposed to slip any more than a properly functioning manual clutch would when it is completely released. Pulling on stumps does tend to show you where the weak link is in your driveline.

No need for that tire with those puny stumps. Gentle tugs work on reverse pulling , just don't go nuts unless you want to buy a new windshield. You don't really pull out stumps,, you break them free a few roots at a time. Its not a one pull job,, stumps need to be broken free a little at a time when pulling them out unless you own a Caterpillar bull dozier.
