People appreciate thoughtfulness, and in a fashion context basic is essentially a synonym for thoughtless, you wore the outfit without care as to why it fits you or your aesthetic and more than likely the fit is an attempt to follow a trend without thinking about why it aligns with your overall look. This is why the same outfit can look great on one person but basic on another person.

i think the difference is “basic” refers to how popular something is in a negative connotation (i.e “nike tech with jordans is so basic), while “simple” rather refers to the simplicity of a piece or outfit . a good example frugal gives/ shows is the margiela gat (though the gat itself is becoming basic)
